To quit care home job today

I took it as a weekend job to earn extra money because my main job doesn't pay enough. The idea was to do it until and if I get a promotion but I am fed up, plus working 6 days a week is hard!
Here today and short staffed yet again, 3 of us instead of 5 which is ridiculous. I'm not blaming the people who are off, I'm not draconian and people have a right to sick days but it's awful how the other staff have no choice to work like this because it's not a job where you can just close for the day.

Still getting people out of bed at almost lunchtime (I'm on my break now)
A unit lead/senior on a power trip who watches you like a hawk and has had a go at me today as apparently my trousers aren't right? I've been wearing them for 4 months and no other senior staff or management have told me about them.
Jumps on you for the slightest thing, doesn't know how to speak to people. You can correct people by all means but there is a way of speaking.
I'm not the best sleeper so 12 hour shifts are gruelling, I'm just fed up and most people from the office look at me like I'm an alien when I say this is what I do on the weekend. Should I quit today? It's not the residents' fault at all.

Well yeah quit if you want but make sure to give the proper notice period. You owe that to the vulnerable people you look after.

Tiredandcantbebothered1 · 19/07/2025 11:43

Also no pension, SSP only and 6p above min wage!!

Will you be OK without the money?
If so, absolutely leave!

Pippa12 · 19/07/2025 11:49

I’m a nurse. I appreciate how difficult care work is, it’s horse work and probably not suitable as a ‘job on the side’. You need a day off to recover from a gruelling care shift.

Although uniform is important (in fact a daily bind of mine!) there’s a time and place to bring up the dreaded uniform discussion!

Have you thought about waitressing, it’s minimum wage but the tips top up your take home pay abit and it’s much less taxing than care work.

I hope your shift improves.

MissMoneyFairy · 19/07/2025 11:49

If you're bank then finish your shift and quit, do you have a contract? I walked out after 2 years from burnout with short staffing, lazy staff, bullying and a complete two faced cow bullying manager, there are loads of care jobs around. Moaning about your trousers is the level of pettiness I put up with daily.

MrHolldstock1 · 19/07/2025 11:50

There's a shortage of care staff so they should be treating those they have better, even if they're not able to pay more. Quitting is something only you can decide because we don't know enough about your situation or the impact it will have. If you can talk to someone else at the home about your concerns would it help?

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 19/07/2025 12:18

Well, I would be laying into the supervisor in a way that helps future employees. I would be telling her that her attitude makes you want to quit and that her people skills need brushing up on.

Callipygion · 19/07/2025 12:18

If they’re that picky about the uniform they should be providing it!

Tiredandcantbebothered1 · 19/07/2025 14:51

Thank you. Sorry was just on a bit of a rampage earlier, the thing is she isn't the manager, she doesn't choose the uniform and say i say nobody else has questioned it in 4 months.

I don't want to let the residents down and they are great, it's just not fair making staff work to unsafe ratios.

I'm rubbish at waitressing, I don't have that very outgoing personality they seem to want 😂 thanks for the idea though, ill see what else is out there.

I'd rather shelf stack, at least you get a discount. You always get a bitter "senior" in every job even in volunteering roles, don't let them get to you.

Ahh good luck in your search OP. Consider other catering roles such as KP, starter/dessert chef or bar maid. Most chains offer tips distributed to all staff now and a generous food&drink discount following recruitment difficulties post brexit/covid.

Definitely try and move away from care for your second job. Although rewarding, it’s incredibly taxing both physically and mentally.

Createausername1970 · 19/07/2025 22:08

A friend of mine works for an agency that provides care to people in their own homes. She generally does 1 or sometimes 2 hour visits to each client on her rota, usually does around 8 hours in total.

Would that appeal?

And yes, if you can manage without the money for a while I would leave. I appreciate you don't want to let the clients down, but who is looking out for you?
