Fucking fleas

I've recently been getting lots of bites on my ankles. Assumed it was from going outside in the evenings, dog walks etc. Then one morning 2 weeks ago noticed a flea in my living room. The dog stays here twice a week and has regular flea treatment.

The house has had 2 bug bombs, everything sprayed with a flea spray. All cushions, blankets, sofa covers hot washed. All furniture moved away so carpets done underneath. Everything disinfected. Then no new bites for 4 days. This morning, sat eating breakfast and there was a flea on my arm. Obviously I will now spray again. But doesn't anyone have any tips, absolute fail safe flea killers? Best repellant to at least protect us from the bites?

Am I being unreasonable to think they should be gone by now and not be going completely crazy?
Help!

Flea eggs are tiny, the odd one may have escaped the fogging. Get a good quality spray like indorex. Spray edges of room especially and soft furnishings.
Put a flea collar in your vacuum bag.
It can take a little while to completely get rid of you have had an infestation.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 19/07/2025 09:36

Are you using Indorex spray ?

AuntyHistamine · 19/07/2025 09:36

The only thing I ever found that got rid of them and stopped re infestation was the chewable things you feed the dog once a month from the vets. Pipettes are useless.

StMarie4me · 19/07/2025 09:42

Echo all those saying indorex. Only thing that ever worked.

Tdcp · 19/07/2025 09:44

Fleas are horrendous this year. We've never had them before and they're everywhere! You have my sympathies.

Maythefuckinglordopen · 19/07/2025 09:44

I used Johnsons 4fleas bug bombs. Then front line homeguard spray. I will get indorex next!

Another vote for Indorex, bought mine from Amazon... keep hoovering to get rid of the eggs.
I also used the Johnsons tablets that release something onto the skin to kill fleas that are on the dog.
You said the dog stays twice a week? Try and use the spray just after the dog has gone to give it the best chance of working, but if the dog comes back and is still infested you're going to have to repeat spray

Only 5% of the fleas are adults. 50% are eggs, with the rest being larvae and pupae. The eggs are impervious to the treatments and can tell when you've killed off the adults so it speeds up the hatching.
Make sure the spray you are using contains a growth inhibitor.
Use tablets from the vet not spot on treatments for your dog going forwards. Make sure all pets are treated ( any other dogs or cats who have access to the house or your other dog as otherwise they can reinfect. ) . Many fleas are now resistant to the chemicals in over the counter spot ons.
Use a steam cleaner round the edge of skirting boards. Wash everything you can on a hot wash. Make sure soft dog beds are washed high temperature or binned - just spraying won't be enough. Wash all bedding high temperature ( like 90% ) and tumble dry. Soft things you can't wash on high temperature put in a bag in the freezer for a week.
It will take you a couple of months to get rid of this I'm afraid, as each time you treat you kill the adults but more from the other life stages move up. You need to treat everywhere and make sure environment warm and muggy before you spray as it makes them more susceptible. And remember - make sure spray has a growth inhibitor.
Good luck.

Indorex- only thing that works

Mrsm010918 · 19/07/2025 10:08

What flea treatment is being used on the dog?

Jessica167353 · 19/07/2025 10:14

Agree with Indorex. Don't waste you money on anything else. And if that fails call pest control and the council will send someone to spray. We had a bad case of fleas and it was only resolved after 2 visits from pest control. They will do a second visit if the first doesn't get them all. We also have to take all bedding and blankets etc to the laundrette.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 19/07/2025 10:32

Yes, as PP above - what flea treatment is used on the dog? Over the counter ones are generally ineffective these days . You need to get them from vet.

I’ve had pets all my life so have had this problem regularly.

There are mainly two types: a major infestation in your home and then when the odd flea gets transported from outside into your house by pets.

I use two things on a regular basis to keep fleas at bay. My steamer and my freezer.

The steamer can be used on carpets, mattresses and upholstery (test check first though) and often on hard floors (again check). The steam can be can go into all the nooks and crannies that can harbour them. Then regular vacuuming should keep on top of it all.

My other weapon is the freezer. I used to scoff when people said to put things in the freezer, who has room in a freezer?

However last year I moved and my garage chest freezer became redundant, but instead of getting rid of it, I now keep it empty in my garage. It’s good for small rugs and pillows and pet beds/blankets that can’t be hot washed.

Ive also used these two methods for problems with moths. I’ve also resorted to sprays, flea collars, all the usual.

Dont forget it’s possible if you have pets they may be going outside, picking up fleas from their favourite resting places, and these are the ones you are seeing.

Good luck.

Put a flea collar inside your hoover bag too to kill off any eggs.

Maythefuckinglordopen · 19/07/2025 13:10

It's not my dog so I'm slowly finding out the details. He's been having the over counter sachet things. Greyhound so he has more than one due to size. However, he's getting something stronger from the vets today. My partners house is all laminate floors and leather sofa so I think easier to clean as mine is all soft and carpets. He's seen the odd one or two there but loads at my house. I've ordered indorex now.
