To think “Side Hustle” can get in the bin?

I am so sick of my feed being full of people “girl bossing” their “side hustle” like it’s a good thing.

it feels like propaganda to make us think there is anything empowering about having to work a SECOND JOB in this dumpster fire of an economy.

One generation ago a man could buy a house and support his family on his one income with only a high school education.

Now, my husband and I have five degrees between us and we both have to bust our arses to support fewer children than my parents had.

FUCK SIDE HUSTLE CULTURE. It’s just another way to make us blame ourselves for being poor when there are systemic and structural factors fucking us over.

end rant.

Side hustle is just a phrase to make selling stuff on eBay, Vinted etc sound better than it is.

But what is wrong with doing this? If you want to make some extra money, and are internet savvy, then why not? Why the judgement? (Not just you, obviously, but definitely on Mumsnet.)

BrendaBleddynsBeachBall · 19/07/2025 07:49

I don’t disagree. I’m fucking exhausted and have no time for a side hustle. I do like @Meadowfinch’s idea of jams etc., but I think that’s probably going to help my mental health more than my bank balance.

I was struck by the poster who said it’s about men minimising the work women do. Applying patronising terminology to undermine the fact women are outperforming them x 2!

@IcanttakethisanymoreI’ve got four on my own! Five between two is more than doable.

biedrona · 19/07/2025 07:50

the only way side hustle can have a positive meaning is when this extra stream of income becomes your main one because it becomes more lucrative than your main job or you find you enjoy it more. I hate the girl boss even more

TheAmusedQuail · 19/07/2025 07:51

My side hustle turned into my full-time job, which is about 60% easier than my 'real' job so will hopefully take me up to retirement. I think of it as being semi-retired.

YourFairCyanReader · 19/07/2025 07:53

I thought a side hustle was something you did outside of your main job for additional, undeclared income.
You can work part-time then earn cash through side hustles like cleaning, beauty aesthetics, nails, doing basics on people's cars like brakes or bodywork, 3D printing, breeding and selling puppies. If you're on UC you can work minimum hours for that, then get your additional income as well as UC.

When you see GDP trends in the UK and the % economically inactive, I do wonder what it would look like if all this income was in the system.

Dozer · 19/07/2025 07:54

I interpret ‘side hustle’ to be to do with selling goods or a service or hoping to sell in the future (eg catering, crafts, writing or art). As your own business. Different from a second job where you’re paid a wage.

Mimilamore · 19/07/2025 07:55

Hate the term…

Annoyeddd · 19/07/2025 08:01

I wonder how much money is made from so called side hustles.
I made some items and showed them to colleagues who suggested I should give up the day job.
How much would they be prepared to pay - ooh about £20.
It has taken three hours plus to make

doneandone · 19/07/2025 08:07

100% agree op.

The vast majority make nothing at all. They’re just expensive hobbies wrapped up as side hustles to make it look like an income generating business. I’ve had numerous clients over the decades with what are now ridiculously called side hustles and very few make any worthwhile money. Most are loss making or the person could have earned more in Tesco or the local pub. Most really are for just “pin money”, pocket money or for blokes doing a bit of diy or car repairs, it’s pub money.

Fair enough, I’ve had a few clients turn it into a proper business or worthwhile income stream, but for the vast majority, it’s more of a vanity thing to make them look or feel important. Most just fade away and get forgotten when they lose interest or they have to get a proper second job to earn money after they finally realise they’re earning nothing from the side hustle!

Needitlow · 19/07/2025 08:14

I agree it is grating but I have recently come to the conclusion that I need a side huddle (or more realistically a second job). I work full time but just can’t keep up with financial demands. I wish I had some creative side hussle as that makes it sound fun. Unfortunately I don’t have a creative hobby I can turn into a job. Am currently looking for evening or weekend work I can fit around my full time work.

dayslikethese1 · 19/07/2025 08:19

I didn't think ppl said girlboss anymore, thought that was more a 2010s thing. I agree it's cringe. Side hustle doesn't really mean a second job, more something freelance or selling stuff on your own for a bit of supplementary money as I understand it.

superplumb · 19/07/2025 08:22

Agree 100%. I hate hate the term girl boss. Its bullshit. One, im not a fucking girl, im a woman, and two, so im a boss....do we walk around saying boy boss? No we dont.
Agree about the 2nd job thing. The term seems to be saved for women doesn't it..again, never applies to men.

courageiscontagious · 19/07/2025 08:27

lljkk · 19/07/2025 06:55

I used to take surveys for pin money & honestly the term side hustle grated on me immediately. I don't have opinions on extra sources of income, but the term is stupid. Probably first encountered it (in surveys) about 7 yrs ago.

“Pin money” has sexist origins- but at least pin money refers to additional/disposable income- not something you need to do to stay afloat/get ahead.

So true, always women coming home from their 9-5 to wash and fold other people’s laundry.

it reminds me of Charlie bucket’s mother!

Hmmm. For me, I do wonder how many of these 'side hustles' earning over £1000/p.a. are being reported to HMRC as required. If not, it's tax evasion.

Like others, I'm not sure what "Girl boss" means. This said, I was brought up when Mrs Thatcher was PM, so, yes, we know that women can take charge 🙄

courageiscontagious · 19/07/2025 08:31

Icanttakethisanymore · 19/07/2025 06:49

Missing the point but what 5 degree do you have between you?

I don’t want to out myself but they’re proper degrees that have us gainfully employed in professional jobs.

We have food on the table, we are luckier than many but our standard of living is nothing like my parents’ was at the same age.

I have a ‘side hustle’. I have a business on EBay but I don’t need the money. I do it for fun. I don’t called it a side hustle though, it’s just a hobby. The term doesn’t bother me

Isitreallysohard · 19/07/2025 08:33

Yeah, you're actually right. It's basically a second job and ain't nothing cool about that! 🤨 Not to mention hustle is so not used correctly.

millymollymoomoo · 19/07/2025 08:33

Not one generation ago they couldn’t. 3 generations ago perhaps.

but the issue if house price inflation vs wage inflation is a very real one

babasaclover · 19/07/2025 08:35

I’m with you. It’s completely ridiculous how much everything costs - absolutely people are working harder and for less - house prices are a joke!!

I have a colleague delivering food in the evenings. A friend who fills out nonsense surveys.

I have a second job marking university assignments. It’s fine I’m just so burnt out- work all day, parent small children, finally get them to bed….and log on to read and correct 20 essays. Get to bed at midnight and do it all again, while my baby boomer parents criticise me for having my children in nursery instead of a nanny, and for not taking one of the children to speech therapy as often as recommended, and for not saving enough to send them to private school.

OP posts:
psuedocream3 · 19/07/2025 08:43

Well they are different issues though.

I have a 'side hustle' which I enjoy and isn't done because I need extra money to bridge an income gap. I would describe that as a side hustle. If I had a second job working a supermarket shift, I wouldn't call it a side hustle.

Not earning enough money can get in the bin, and girl boss is MLM language to suck people in, not a fan.

I don't have any negative connotations with the word hustle, just means busy to me, as in, hustle and bustle.

Maybe each has a degree and a masters and one of them has a PhD?

PuppyMonkey · 19/07/2025 08:47

I can’t be arsed to Google it, what’s the origin of pin money please?
