To be fed up of DS questions

DS is 9. He asks a lot of questions, like most 9 year olds. The latest obsession is Eurovision.

  • Who came third place in 2022?
  • Which place did Finland come in 2023?
  • We‘ll listen to a song, he‘ll ask which position it came in in whatever year it competed

I love that he is inquisitive but his questions make me want to scream sometimes. Any advice how to answer questions that only have a I DON‘T FUCKING KNOW AND I DON‘T CARE answer?

Does he want to know or is he testing you? DS does both - I am often tested on Top Trump figures! It sounds like you need an Alexa or similar for him to ask and give you a break.

He just wants to know. He hasn’t thought to test me on things yet, thank goddesses.

Alexa is a good call!

I have a 9 year old son who I’ve just had to pause because I’m tired of the questions. But the truth is they are just trying to engage with us, to talk to us. There will I suspect come a time when they won’t emerge from their bedrooms before noon and not give us a grunt even.

My 8 year old once turned to me while we were watching TV and asked, "Who is your third favourite Spurs goalie?"

I don't support Spurs.

Sirzy · 18/07/2025 19:42

“I’m not sure why don’t we look it up together” or “why don’t you look it up and let me know”

I hope this doesn’t across the wrong way, but are there any other issues? Could he be autistic? (And I absolutely don’t mean that inquisitive kids are autistic, I just notice he’s looking for very facts based, detailed answers).

Get him an Alexa or similar.

Midnightlove · 18/07/2025 19:50

I got an alexa for this reason.. he still asks me 🫣

This sounds exactly like something DS would ask, except I do support Spurs 😂

There are many books full of facts for less than £5.00. I’m sure he’d like one as an end of term treat!

“I’m not sure why don’t we look it up together” or “why don’t you look it up and let me know”

This is much better than my usual ‘why do you think I would know that?’ answers.

There are other issues but no current concerns about Autism

And here’s me with teens thinking I miss the days where they didn’t shut up Grin

SirEctor · 18/07/2025 20:00

"I don't know" is a perfectly fine answer. I don't offer to look things like that up, just say I don't know. You don't have to say you don't care but at 9 he should realise that you're not Google and aren't going to have an encyclopaedic knowledge of Eurovision trivia unless it is a subject that interests you.

I often tell mine (10 and 7) that I don't know anything about their topic of interest. They're welcome to find a book about it in the library or Google something if they ask.
