To wear tan wedges and bag to a white party?

We’re going to a white party where you have to wear all white. Never been to one before and wouldn’t be my choice but a big family event we can’t get out of … anyway …. For those who have been to a white party- I’m trying to not pack (flying with a basic airline hang luggage only) more than I need to and the shoes I’m wearing for the main event and bag are tan coloured. Is this ok to also wear to a white party?! Reluctant to spend on a suitcase to carry more across and also money on white accessories I’ll never wear again.

Any Insights much appreciated!

Ummm, yeah!. Dinner en Blanc' literally means Dinner in white. It's glamorous because people really dress up & exclusive because limited amount of tickets. Usually catered by excellent chefs and really good wine & cocktails. All I said was it's fun. Not sure why a few of you are so salty about it.

Two things that amaze me.

  1. Anyone would be so controlling as to host a party and tell everyone what to wear.
  2. Anyone would accept an invitation from someone who wants to control what they wear at their party.

Each to their own but it's bloody strange.

I think this too. And I love your user name!!!

First time I saw it was Kyle Richards on RHOBH. She and Mauricio had a huge white party every year - looked very glam.

Well more fool you. You can dress up, have fun and have excellent food without being told what to wear. Plus the OPs white party is a family party not a paid event.

Like a PP says, it is utter insanity that the OP has been mandated by a family member to go abroad and comply with a ridiculous dress code. And that people are seemingly going along with it. Is there not a family WhatsApp group where everyone is going WTF?

I do not own a single white item of clothing and never will. If I was faced with an invitation, I would go I wanted to travel because I do like family parties but I wouldn't be buying new clothes so if the host was telling me what to wear, they would be paying for my outfit and cleaning, reselling or donating it afterwards because I wouldn't be taking it home with me.

Lordy. I suppose most people own a white top but pretty sure all the men aren’t going to go out and buy white trousers or shorts. There will be a lot of tan chino shorts!
I have a white bias cut linen maxi skirt that still has the tags on as I’ve never dared wear it. White bottoms feel a bit dangerous.

I remember in my disco days 50 odd years ago when the DJ turned on particular lighting anything white really glowed like a fluorescent white. Not just top layers of clothing. Randy teenage boys would look round the dance floor hoping to catch sight of a white bra glowing underneath a flimsy top 🙄

It’s not a new thing. On package holidays to Spain in the 70’s there would always be a themed white clothing party. Usually towards the end of the holiday when everyone had a sun tan. I haven’t heard of one in decades but maybe I need to get out more .

I was astonished to read a thread earlier this week about a wedding invitation and the bride had decreed all guests had to wear blue.

This is the case for a myriad of events where dressing in white is not compulsory.
Maybe you need to widen your horizons and stop falling for the hype; they’ve reeled you in like a fish on the line 😆

I know that people can organise any type of party they want but I would hate being told to wear all white. If I had my period, I would feel very anxious (for this reason, certain sports are removing the requirement to wear white shorts).

@KilkennyCats- my horizons are just great. I haven't fallen for anything, I've been to a few parties and had fun.

We stayed at a hotel once and a neighbouring hotel were hosting a white party (think they did it every week) and were trying to encourage people from our hotel to come over. No thanks 😂 white is not the colour for me, I’m notoriously clumsy and spill things down me constantly!!
the wedges and bag will be fine; don’t worry.

This is me. I have a couple of white tops and every time I get one out dh always asks "are we not eating when we go out?" 😂😂 bit rude but true.
Absolutely would not be wearing white on my bottom half my arse is huge enough without that.

I went to a white themed wedding last year and certainly most of the men were wearing tan/beige shoes. There were also lots of raffia/straw/jute bags, also in brownish hues, so I think you will be fine.

spoonbillstretford · 19/07/2025 16:42

A hotel we stayed in about ten years ago on holiday had a black & white party one evening. I've never heard of it in relation to P Diddy and as far as I know they existed long before his time.
