To wish schools taught kids....

Lighthearted... but I wish they did an entire term on 'looking for things with eyes AND hands'... I worry for my children - they can't find their own feet!
Any suggested lessons?

You say "lighthearted" - but this falls 100% into the category "It's the job of parents".

It really is.

I fully agree! And can't imagine how it would be planned for by teachers as a structured lesson... which is why it's more of a joke than a suggestion for the national curriculum!

Why do parents expect schools to teach their children absolutely everything these days?

RhaenysRocks · 18/07/2025 10:14

Yeah sorry OP but this isn't going to be light-hearted. I know you were joking but it does seem like society wants school literally bring kids up now. It's up to us to teach them everything from potty training to pensions. Simultaneously, from another thread, parents are wrong if they impose consequences on their kids for not listening and defying direct, repeated instructions so we should take feral, entirely undisciplined kids and somehow I still every life skill they could possibly need whilst also never addressing any shortcomings with sanctions or discipline.

Hodgemollar · 18/07/2025 10:16

If you worry your children can’t do basic things maybe you should reflect on your parenting.

Pickone · 18/07/2025 10:17

Oof, nobody has a sense of humour this morning!

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 18/07/2025 10:22

I'm reading this as a cry of desperation from a parent who is wondering if maybe others could get through to her kids what she can't. I think we've all been there. That moment when the teacher says your child is always very well-behaved in class and you wonder what happens to them on the way home from school.

For what it's worth, nobody seems to have managed to teach my husband how to find things, and he is (a) 70; (b) the cleverest person I know; and (c) immensely capable in most other respects. He just can't seem to grasp the concept that you need to look under or behind things sometimes. Exasperating!

I would think we were married to the same man, except yours is 3 years older than mine!

Edited to say I can almost guarantee, every time we leave the house, either his wallet of his keys, or both, will be "missing". Err, you just put the newspaper down on top of them.

Anemone52 · 18/07/2025 10:40

I took it as lighthearted! I don’t have any wishes for more lessons in school, but I do wish that I had more time to teach my children myself. It feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day to teach them the things that I want to.

Those of us who are or have been teachers see demands that schools teach things that parents don't all the time. We can be forgiven for not falling about with hysterical laughter.

stargirl1701 · 18/07/2025 10:52

Snort. I do this multiple times a day with my class of 6 year olds!

This is something you can do at home.

I think it would be great if all classes from Reception did stretching exercises every morning before lessons throughout their entire schooling.

Dgc school makes them walk a mile round fields before lessons start every morning

Calm down. It's not an actual demand.

Needmorelego · 18/07/2025 11:29

@eqpi4t2hbsnktd have you never read the poem in Allan Ahlbergs book "Please Mrs Butler" about the missing scissors.
I expect it's an everyday event in most primary school classrooms 😂

pucksack · 18/07/2025 11:31

I think this is an age thing & most dc grow out of it.

cliffdiver · 18/07/2025 11:31

It’s called having a ‘mummy look’

You can't mentions schools or teachers on MNs without robust replies. It's the law.

Needmorelego · 18/07/2025 11:32

From my favourite poetry book.

Budgeting skills, might not be lighthearted but it would be far more use to most people than the stuff learnt in maths, can honestly say I’ve on no occasion since leaving school needed to know the volume of a sphere or the value of x etc

Yanbu OP! They could also teach "how to take a fucking joke" as a lot of parents don't teach that either apparently!😂

Marshathemallow · 18/07/2025 11:34

Blimey, it’s a lighthearted thread! Maybe schools should teach kids what “lighthearted” means 😜!

Not really, as you actually should be teaching reading comprehension, so I'd hope you're capable of that

Needmorelego · 18/07/2025 11:36

@eqpi4t2hbsnktd I've got one....
They need to teach children that when a letter is handed to them at home time it gets given into the hand of your adult or placed in your bag....not abandoned on the floor or desk.
😂

I referred to the OP's "lighthearted" comment in my first post.

You might take a leaf out of your own book of recommendations in suggesting that to me.
