Average Time you spend eating Dinner

On average so not an all night dinner or quite rushed dinner/ lunch.

When you have cooked a nice meal or got your favourite takeaway. How long do you spend eating it/ not moving from table or sofa. Whether with family/ partner or alone.

I read so many threads on here about how people like to have a no phones rule or try to have the TV off.
But regardless how long do you actually spend before you go back into the kitchen and dump the plates/ clear up.
??

about an hour but I am a very slow eater

Ankleblisters · 17/07/2025 16:06

It depends (on who is around and what we're eating) We're both quite fast eaters (boarding school does that to people) so if it's just the two of us maybe 15mins?
If my sisters are here then much longer, more like 20 - 30mins and then sit at the table for a bit afterwards chatting.

Bbq1 · 17/07/2025 16:08

About 20 minutes but I am a quick eater with a small appetite (so small servings),. My dh has a much bigger appetite but is incredibly slow and easily takes an hour to eat a meal.

Petrovaposy · 17/07/2025 16:08

well it depends!
On my own - 15- 20 mins
Talking with others - 30 - 40 mins
Pudding and coffee too - about an hour.

Tbairns · 17/07/2025 16:10

If it's just the two of us - 30 minutes at the table, he's a slow eater. If DS is visiting then more like an hour as more chatting than eating.
On my own 10 minutes.

I'm a slow eater too. Tho more like 30/ 40 mins. A piping hot dinner like cottage pie or a large fish and chips.
Club sandwich/ baguette at a weekend could easily enjoy for 30 odd mins.

It does annoy me when someone starts tidying up after 15 mins. Not very social. Don't wanna hear the washing up too soon.

Did you find that annoying at first?
Do you remove yourself/ plate while he still eats.
But not be noisy either so I guess he can eat in peace?
I could imagine with some couples that could cause arguments lol

Around a hour for dinner. Like to relax, eat and chat.

I wouldn't say I found it annoying all all, more awkward and a bit embarrassing in our early days together because my dh feels embarrassed sometimes when he takes so long. He can't help it. Okay at home but eating out, I consciously slow myself down became it's not pleasant for either of us for me to be sitting there finished whilst he's still im the middle of his meal . I reach my limit of being full much more quickly too. My husband just can't speed up and I can't go really slowly. Dh hates it when we're out if waiters are hovering and checking the table because they expect him to have finished. That's really off putting for him. A manager of a restaurant recently made a loud "joke" about how long dh was taking to eat a steak. That was really out of order and spoilt dhs enjoyment sonewhat

About half an hour on average, for a meal like a roast,or fish and chips. I'm quite a fast eater.

TheCurious0range · 17/07/2025 17:34

Weekday dinner 25/30 minutes at the table , weekends longer if chatting etc. Weekdays I'm more conscious of homework, showers, bedtime etc

Edenmum2 · 17/07/2025 17:44

About 6 minutes

Neurodiversitydoctor · 17/07/2025 17:50

Dietians recommend 20 minutes, I am thinking that is for a single course. Restaurants expect their table back at around 1hour 30 don't they ? So 20-30 minutes per course seems about right to me.

Wonderwall23 · 17/07/2025 17:51

10 minutes!

I would be completely incompatible with anyone who took longer than 20 but thankfully that doesn't really happen (and appreciate that goes both ways). I wouldn't start tidying until everyone finished but I would find it very painful to sit waiting!

If it was a big roast with extended family we might sit for half an hour chatting but the eating but would still be done in 10.

AnneLovesGilbert · 17/07/2025 17:52

About 45-60 mins. Two small children.

TheChosenTwo · 17/07/2025 17:54

20-30 minutes during the week. Dh spends hours cooking because he really enjoys it (weirdo) and I always think it’s a shame we are over and done with so quickly! We can be a table of either 3,4,5 or 6 depending on who’s in and if extras are here.
weekends are a bit slower, we might have 2 courses and we might have wine!
No tv on; just chatting, maybe music.

ApolloandDaphne · 17/07/2025 17:56

On a normal evening about 10 minutes max sitting at the breakfast bar. Longer if we sit in the dining room and have wine etc.

purplecorkheart · 17/07/2025 18:22

About 15 to 20 mins normally but it does depend on what I am eating. For example I tend to eat fish like plaice much more quick than say a steak etc.

WaitedBlankey · 17/07/2025 18:26

10 minutes.
