Barking bloody dogs

Hotdays2 · 17/07/2025 14:00

Really fed with barking bloody dogs in our neighbourhood. A few houses along a woman has a dog boarding place and many of the other neighbours seem to independently have dogs. When one sets off, it turns into an absolute cacophony of barking and often outright howling. Putting out the washing just now and next door seems to have a dog that they’re looking after which is non-stop barking at me. They don’t normally have one, so can only presume they’re dog sitting for family on holiday. Everyone seems to go out and leave their dogs in the garden to bark, and apart from our good next door neighbour, I never hear anyone telling their dogs to shut up or bringing them in.
I don’t have a dog, why should the summer months be ruined by others people’s lack of consideration/responsibility dog owning?

You’ll get flamed because Mumsnet loves dogs but I agree with you. At the very least I’d expect to hear people telling their dogs to stfu.

Our whole road is full of dogs now and when the weather is hot we can’t even have our windows open at night as we constantly get woken up by dogs barking.

vodkaredbullgirl · 17/07/2025 16:42

Always get my dogs in when they start barking.

UnsocialMedia · 17/07/2025 16:43

Any dog owners on the thread, how easy is it to train a dog not to bark when it goes outside? I'm planning on having a chat with our next door neighbours about their dog that barks without fail every morning when they let it outside. The neighbours the other side have a dog that doesn't do this, so I'm presuming it's something that can be trained.

PopThatBench · 17/07/2025 16:47

Honestly, I love dogs, but our area is exactly the same.
Last night I nearly lost my shit after 3 hours of the loudest dog barking until nearly 10pm.
It was constant.
It then set off all the other dogs.
If my daughter was in the garden loudly playing and singing and shouting till 10pm I’d fully expect a knock at my door.
But apparently “dogs bark” is an excuse? Get your fucking dog inside you inconsiderate arseholes.

I'd say it depends why it's barking...

  1. Barking during play - easy to train. You play with the dog and stop as soon as it starts barking and start again when quiet
  2. Barking during excitement of being outside - fairly easy. Take the dog out on a long line and bring him/her in when the start barking. Repeat until they realise they can only go out and stay out when quiet.
  3. Barking at small animals if the dog has a strong prey drive - harder as natural instinct is to chase the squirrel/cat/bird and it's hard to get focus on you... but possible with time (and a long line as above)
vodkaredbullgirl · 17/07/2025 17:13

One of my dogs barks at a hedgehog at night, have to do a hedgehog check before I let them out.

Decisionsdecisions1 · 17/07/2025 17:23

The other solution is muzzle them between 9.30pm and 7am. I can tolerate daytime barking but nighttime is as unreasonable as someone regularly playing their music outside over night.

Don't want to muzzle them? Then train them. Can't be bothered to train them? Then re-home them to a more responsible owner who will try harder.

And it's not a dog bashing thread. It's an irresponsible, inconsiderate, generally twattish owner thread.

Thanks for that. It occasionally barks if something is at the gate or it's seen something exciting, and I'm fine with that, that's totally bearable. It's the barking when it's let out in the mornings that's the killer. It can be any time between 5 and 7.

Even if it only barks a handful of times and then comes back in, it's too late, we've been woken up by then.

YANBU. I love dogs but continual barking would drive me mad.

Depends on the dog. Some breeds are predisposed to bark. My dog doesn't bark often but it is incredibly loud.

When I moved house all the dogs around bark, my nextdoor neighbour in particular has two which are constant and yappy. Mine would join in straight away. Took three days to train him not to. But I don't think I could manage to train my neighbours dogs at all, I think they share a braincell between them, and it often gets lost travelling back and forth.

I have two, one that nips it when told, and one who just will not stop barking if left to her own devices. Shes hyper vigilant.
Both have had the same training but different breeds.
I tell one "enough" and he zips it and put the other one inside immediately as soon as she starts because the command goes in one ear and out the other.
Neither are outside unsupervised or allowed to just carry on at people like twats.

I agree that its a pain in the arse for others which is why i take immediate steps to stop the barky one starting as soon as i hear her preemptive "hoffing".

Make a complaint to planning about the Dog Boarding place

champagnetrial · 17/07/2025 18:14

I'm looking after a friend's dog atm and it is a barker. For no discernible reason. I do apologise if I am your neighbour, OP. If it's any help, it's driving me bonkers as well. The good news is, it's only temporary. (I also have a dog who is completely silent. He keeps looking at me like 'wtf???' when the barky dog is in his face. I'm like, I dunno mate. I can't work it out either.)

MadisonAvenue · 17/07/2025 18:29

We have a dog who rarely barks, but our next door neighbours have a yappy little terrier and a dog door. As soon as it hears one of us step out into the back garden it dives through the door and starts yapping, no matter what time of day or night.

I see someone on walks who has two Daschunds, I wear hearing aids and have to flick the receivers out of my ears before I get near to them because the incessant barking is too much.

Chinsupmeloves · 17/07/2025 18:38

Have always had dogs and agree it's selfish and unresponsive for owners to leave them outside for long periods of time.

Limoncellospritzlover · 17/07/2025 18:47

We live in a road where everyone has a dog except us. I can’t bear the barking but I’ve chosen to live here so suffer it. I can’t understand why owners let their dogs bark, I really think it’s like having your own babies crying and you become immune to it. It ruins sitting out in the garden in warm weather. Our next door neighbour has loads of garden wrapping around ours. They have 2 dogs who are siblings, one barks constantly and the other doesn’t. We have been useless in complaining as they are lovely people yet they know it annoys us.
We moved to this house to escape barking dogs and feral children next door. I realise that we would have to live in the middle of nowhere to escape and there’s still no guarantee! In fact, every holiday we’ve taken recently, whether in the UK or abroad there are always barking dogs around. To me it’s the worst noise ever but I know I’m particularly sensitive to it. Noise cancelling headphones may be the answer but I don’t particularly want to wear them when sitting out!!

Hotdays2 · 17/07/2025 19:05

Yes, do think a lot of it comes down to the owner. A friend has three dogs who bark madly when I go round her house, however the difference is that she shouts at them to shut up (and threatens them with being put in a dogs home, although I’m not sure they take that in). It seems that loads of people bought dogs during lockdown and are now out at work or just being lazy owners and leaving them out in the garden all the time. I’ve trained myself in general to not be ridiculously bothered, when they start howling in unison myself and my partner have to laugh at it now.

Does this mean that they both start barking but one can be hushed straight away whereas the other one has to be taken inside? The problem we have is that even if the dog only barks for 5 - 10 seconds it’s enough to startle us awake and then we can’t get back to sleep. The damage is done by then.
I wonder if there’s something they can do inside the house which will result in it not barking at all when they let it out.

Very! Our dog never barks, she doesn't bark at the door or anything. The only time she barks is if someone (even us) looks through the living room window. If we are playing with her and she barks we will tell her enough and she stops. She is trained to bark on command and to "whisper" little bark. I can stand barky dogs. I've had neighbours dogs barking for hours when they go out or locked In the garden barking and it's torture!

Gingercatlover · 17/07/2025 22:18

We have neighbours with a dog and the constant all afternoon barking resulted in me contacting the council, who sent them a warning letter, they denied it was their dog barking the lady at the council told me. But it has done the trick as they only let it bark for ten minutes max before they distract it now. So I feel your pain, it drove me potty.

don’t know why people think it’s acceptable to leave them to bark tbh.

Catladywithoutacat · 18/07/2025 03:27

I have a non barky dog only when someone knocks on the door but in general doesn’t bother me, I realised today though that birds can be so annoying when they argue. I had to close my window cause of some sqeeky bird having a go at another one
