Would a child ever be removed from a household where there was coercive control?

Posting for traffic. Can’t give too much info as it’s too outing. Child is in a family where the father is coercively controlling the mother. She doesn’t want to leave. SS involved. My question is, what is the process here? Would the child ever be removed in this situation? Child is about 10.

DV, whether physical or otherwise, is now rightly seen as a form of child neglect due to the impact it has on the children.

Highly unlikely they would be taken from a birth parent for this on the face of it but the mother (presumably you?) will need to show what steps you are taking to protect and safe guard yourself and the children. Have they been put on a children in need or Child protection plan? What is the plan? You know you cannot stay with him.

Thanks. It is not me.

I am not sure if they have been put on a plan. Is that normal practice? What does it mean?

If SS are involved already and it is deemed the child is unsafe and the mother is not putting things in place to protect the child then yes, a child can be removed. A child in need then/ or child protection plan would usually be in place first though and maybe for some time.

I've seen this happen and I've also seen a child reunified with the mother once she was away from the father and could provide a safe place for the child.

However, if the mother is working with SS then the child may well stay in the home. There's lots of factors at play and it is not a straight yes or no.

The threshold is so high to have children taken away. With the information you have provided, I highly doubt the children would be removed.

We are eligible for 3 foster children but only have 2 as it is better for family life. We have at least 2/3 phones calls a day from different agencies asking if we can take a different child. That’s 14/21 children a week that are looking for a home just from us.

Thanks for your replies. Not to drip feed but there is also child neglect. I understand that lack of foster placements feeds into whether children can be removed.

Then there should be a child in need or child protection already in place.

There are a lack of foster placements everywhere unfortunately and even in courts there's a huge emphasis on keeping children in the biological home for as long as possible. The criteria for removal is really high
