To be horrified that my dog is riddled with fleas

We're recently back from holidays, left our springer with my in-laws who have three dogs. Yesterday I took her to the groomer who phoned me shortly afterwards to tell me that she was absolutely covered in fleas.
She got as many off as she could but there were still a few left. I came home, vacuumed and sprayed all the carpets, threw out the dog's bedding, gave her a flea tablet and scrubbed her with anti-flea shampoo. And warned the in-laws, but they say they checked theirs earlier in the week and they don't have fleas.
I've been going to this groomer for a long time and she says she's never seen fleas on my dogs before. But that they can pick them up from grass and the hot weather is very conducive to fleas.
I've never encountered fleas before -is this enough to get rid of them? any advice on what works is gratefully received!
Right now, I'm googling what diseases can be carried by fleas... Apart from the plague!

You should use monthly spot or tablet treatment as a preventative. It's not anybody' fault.

Picklechicken · 17/07/2025 13:38

Do you not regularly treat your dog with prescription strength flea treatment? If you don’t now is the time to start. Once they take hold it can be tricky to get rid of them so the key is to get ahead of it before it even starts. What spray have you used? Indorex is the best one.

won · 17/07/2025 13:39

Dogs pick up fleas from all sorts of places and it can quickly become an infestation of the dog and your home. It’s not enough to do what you’ve done. The dog needs to be on treatment, bravecto is the easiest, other options are topical ones.

Your local council will be able to come out and spray your home for a small fee.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 17/07/2025 13:43

As above - Indorex for the house the whole house, you will need more than one tin !!
and, don't forget to indorex the car too, as I guess the dog has been in the car ?!

My dogs wear these fleas collars that you don't need to replace until 8 months tho I do find not as affective by then so I do it 6 monthly.
Seresto, and I check various companies online to get at the best price.

ForeverPombear · 17/07/2025 13:44

How often do you treat your dog?

I get a tablet from the vets that last 3 months for fleas, ticks etc and they've always worked very well.

caringcarer · 17/07/2025 13:48

You need to give tablets and spot on back of head for most effective treatment. I have 2 dogs and 2 cats and they are all treated on the last day of every month. I have a phone reminder pop up so I don't forget.

DiscoBob · 17/07/2025 13:49

I'd say it's unusual your dogs never had them if you don't use spot on treatment regularly. It's true that in summer many pets get fleas unless they've had the prevention treatment.
Just do that monthly on both dogs from now on and you should be fine. Indorex spray everything too just in case. Though they don't really live on bedding and stuff for long as they need a red blooded host.

BadTitan · 17/07/2025 14:00

Thanks everyone, for your suggestions! we did used to treat our old dog regularly, with the help of text message alerts from the vet, but I guess we forgot to keep on top of things with this one!
I've used a couple of cans of the Bob Martin spray on the carpets and furniture while everyone is out. Will do the car this evening as well. And the groomer suggested washing the dog every evening for a week.

Poor you. We had a similar issue with a dog minder. To resolve the issue we flea bombed the house - then washed everything - sofa and cushion covers, beds, rugs, blankets and vacuumed everything we could not wash daily for a week. We also switched to a prescription only flea preventative treatment and used a flea comb (like a nit comb) daily. It's a nightmare.

Moveoverdarlin · 17/07/2025 14:03

The monthly flea treatment is the only thing that really works IMO.

Whatafustercluck · 17/07/2025 14:04

We pay a monthly subscription and treat our cats every month without fail. But we can't keep on top of their fleas this summer. It's been very mild, which I'm sure doesn't help - both in terms of animals spending more time outside and it providing perfect conditions in which fleas breed.

DeadsoulsAngel · 17/07/2025 14:16

Soresto flea collars are brilliant and last six months so less remembering involved! They also kill existing fleas. Our dog has one and we also use a regular preventative on the cats, no issues here fortunately!

BadTitan · 17/07/2025 14:26

I've just signed up to an Amazon subscription - hopefully I can keep on top of that. ADHD is a byatch!
OH thinks that washing the dog's bedding will be enough.... I don't agree.

Our vet doesn't recommend soresto collars. We used them and our dog lost all his fur around his neck, when we took him in they mentioned this:

"Following more than 100,000 reports of Seresto’s harm to pets — including more than 3,000 deaths — the EPA announced in July 2023 that it would limit approval of the product to five years and require more detailed reporting of harm incidents from the flea collar’s maker, Elanco."

Federal Watchdog Blasts EPA’s Failure to Assess Safety of Pesticides Used on Flea, Tick Collars

A scathing report released today by a federal oversight agency revealed that the Environmental Protection Agency’s deeply flawed system for reporting harm to people and pets makes it impossible to conclude whether the Seresto flea collar is safe. Foll...

Yes do this, I don't know why you don't anyway it is what it is hopefully they clear up soon, i imagine the groomer had to fumigate her place to.

Wolfiefan · 17/07/2025 14:33

You need monthly prescription stuff from the vet. And Bob Martin stuff is shite. Get Indorex spray for the house.

Oh Amazon had beem selling. fake treatments it was on the news recently. Can you not do it through your vet or maybe pets at home

IAmQuiteNiceActually · 17/07/2025 14:36

Just wash your dog regularly and do a spot on treatment, hoover every day and wash everything at 60C. There's really no need to cover your house in pesticides. Calm down - they're just fleas!

IAmQuiteNiceActually · 17/07/2025 14:37

You can buy Advantage very cheaply online. I used to buy it from the vets thinking I couldn't get it elsewhere. It's a fraction of the price.

Pollqueen · 17/07/2025 14:39

Stick a flea collar in the drum of your vacuum cleaner as this kills them when they are sucked in. Otherwise they can just hop right out again

FickleOcelot · 17/07/2025 14:41

Might be worth reading about the impact of spot on treatments

Serpentstooth · 17/07/2025 14:45

If your dog is with other ďogs, or is walked in a public park, you need to treat him monthly, with preventative. Available from your vet.

The Bob Martin isn't really that good. Deffo get indorex. You need a few cans too. But it really works. I personally don't even mind the smell.

Beansandcheesearegood · 17/07/2025 14:52

Where having issues too with fleas. Can I ask can u use the front line liquid monthly stuff and the flea tablet too?

Cancel this and go through your vets. The stuff Amazon sells isn’t as effective. We pay £20 a month for a pet healthcare plan through our vets for our cat (separate to pet insurance which we also have) and it includes Bravecto and Milpro every 3 months, a 6 monthly vet check and a percentage off any treatment. I think that’s worth it.
