To get the single measels vaccine ?

Thotnbg · 17/07/2025 09:11

I live in Liverpool and have a six month old baby (who was 9 weeks prem )and a 5 year old DS .

I'm thinking of getting my baby the single vaccine tomorrow to tide him over until his one year jabs.

For those that don't know we have an influx of cases here and low vaccine take up.

Just wondering if I'm being unreasonable? Obviously he was prem so I do worry about him a bit more , but he's perfectly healthy .

I would consider it if the doctor agreed etc. I had a prem baby who had to have some vaccines delayed as she wasn't well enough, it was really worrying with a school aged sibling (aka germ factory) in the same house.

Fancycheese · 17/07/2025 09:15

I wasn’t aware they could have the single measles jab early, I thought it had to be MMR. I’m also from the area and so am interested in this. I wouldn’t be surprised if this starts being advised given the current outbreak.

noblegiraffe · 17/07/2025 09:15

If they have the single jab can they then also have the MMR?

Thotnbg · 17/07/2025 09:19

He could have the MMR , but would still need it again at one years old (from what I have read ) as this will only give him immunity for a shorter space of time . Which is why I'm thinking of the single vaccine.

@Fancycheese I'm looking at a clinic on Rodney Street that provide it

Your baby might be able to have MMR due to the current measles outbreak - it can be given from six months in some circumstances. The single antigen vaccine is unlicensed and you’d have to seek it privately.

PoxyAndIKnowIt · 17/07/2025 09:25

YANBU to want to do this to protect your child, but surely it's best discussed with a doctor rather than random non-medics on the internet.

Our GPs are now giving it early due to the outbreak , I called them yesterday and I am waiting for nurses to say if / when my DS can have it . I'm just a bit worried with it been the holidays and we will be out and about .

No you are not. Measles is awful.

YourSpryWriter · 17/07/2025 09:33

I don't think you are being unreasonable at all. If your little one can have the jab go for it and no I don't think you are being dramatic.

I paid for my ds to have the chicken pox jab as it went round his nursery twice and he managed to avoid it both times. His dad didn't get chicken pox till secondary school and I didn't want that risk for ds as it's worse when older.

Tormundsbeard · 17/07/2025 09:39

Do NHS offer it singly? When our DDs were young (early 00s) we paid for them to have the MMR injections separately as I worried about potential side effects of having all three at once.
i know it has all been disproved now, but at the time I was a worried Mum of two under twos.

ChaosDream · 17/07/2025 09:48

@Thotnbgi hope you’re able to get the MMR for your wee one. You’re not being unreasonable to want to protect them.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 17/07/2025 10:04

You aren’t being dramatic at all. The timing of vaccines for babies is dependent on their natural immunity. Baby will have some immunity to measles from you (assuming you have had it) that are passed in pregnancy but I would get GP advice about whether MMR could be given early.

Agreed.

I’m old. I got measles as an infant before vaccines. Apparently, my parents were advised that it was very likely I would die. My mother still gets upset about it now.

Well you didn't actually ask that, but my apologies.

Thing is people do often make statements of varying degrees of accuracy and give quasi-medical advice on threads such as these, so it's worth being careful what you give credence to, that's all.

But as for being dramatic? No you're not. I'd be scared to have an unvaccinated child at the moment and would also look into any earlier options.

ObliviousCoalmine · 17/07/2025 10:23

I think it’s a reasonable enough question based on where you live and what’s currently happening and you’re not being unreasonable to speak to the dr about it. I would.

Hoardasurass · 17/07/2025 10:27

@Thotnbg if your dc can't have the mmr then they cant have the single measles jab.
The single vaccines are also less effective than the mmr.
I'd also question where they got the vaccine from as it hasn't been manufactured in the uk or eu for decades.
I'd get the mmr as soon as your dc is allowed it

Icecreamandcoffee · 17/07/2025 10:28

You are not been unreasonable at all. Speak to the Dr. They might ring the immunology team at the local hospital or the local hospital may have already sent advice about early immunisation over already given the cases.

Hopefully lots of people will take up the offer of jabs and it will slow down the number of cases.

Serpentstooth · 17/07/2025 10:32

I'm old, so had all these illnesses in childhood. Measles, I was dangerously unwell but am unscathed, mumps wasn't great, rubella I had in the 5th month of pregnancy. Baby also undamaged. But I was lucky and nobody should rely on luck if they don't have to. Get as much protection for your children as possible against these potentially damaging diseases.

No, you’re not being dramatic.

there was an outbreak of something when my youngest was a baby, too young for the mmr and I remember being absolutely furious that my child was potentially at risk because of others.

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 17/07/2025 10:39

You’re not being the least bit dramatic.

Hankunamatata · 17/07/2025 10:44

Id ask about mmr. Mumps complications can affect male fertility

Thotnbg · 17/07/2025 12:29

Thanks everyone , I'm waiting for the nurse from the GPs to call me back .

We go to Wales in 10 days for 2 weeks , to somewhere not overly busy . So depending if the GP can book us in I will wait for thier appointment I will just travel back for the day if needs be, but if they don't give it i will go private, not sure if I will get it done tomorrow or the day we get back and just limit next week to outdoor only .

We've had a letter emailed home from my DS school every week regarding measels, they are running vaccine days throughout the summer in Liverpool but only for school aged children.

My mum was very ill with measles. I was just young enough to get the vaccination when it came out.

I was very ill with mumps.

Justthethingsthatyoudointhisgarden · 17/07/2025 14:06

I know two people deafened due to measles. Anyone thinking the MMR in unsafe is being unreasonable. Anyone not vaccinating their children is being unreasonable. Your baby would be a lot safer if there was herd immunity in your area.
You can't get the single vaccine on the NHS. If your child is old enough to have the vaccine, just get the MMR.
