Child being given allergen at school

First of all, my child’s school is a wonderful place that nurtures her, and has been incredible at so many things, however we have a bit of a problem.

On 3 occasions this year they have given her food which contains milk, which we know she is allergic to (Non-ige reactions, think dihorrea, stomach pain, rashes etc)

Our child is 4, and is usually pretty good at questioning unknown foods, however all 3 occasions have occurred at the end of term- think Father Christmas & the Easter bunny gave chocolate and the PTFA gave ice cream.

The 2 previous times I have called and been very polite and reminded them that obviously a 4 year old would
assume Father Christmas and the Easter bunny would be aware of their allergies.

Would it be unreasonable at this point to put in a written complaint? All of my days for dependents this year have been used due to my daughter’s school giving her a known allergen, and most importantly she has had to suffer through the symptoms 3 times even though we have made it clear she is not to have milk!!

Is anyone aware of any guidance schools should be following- they are great for lunches, it just seems to be during end of term madness we are 3/3. I know it’ll get easier for us as our daughter gets older, but it seems crazy they’re so lapse

Complain... the number of food based celebrations at primary school used to drive me crackers.. every time, my daughter was either put at risk, excluded from the celebration, or made to stand out by having to bring her own alternative...

No you wouldn’t be unreasonable to put in a written complaint.

Email the head and governors. They should not be getting this sort of thing wrong.

I'm a primary teacher. You wouldn't be unreasonable at all to put in a complaint. It's not hard to cater for children with allergies and they have no excuse

Yes complain. School should be ensuring an alternative is provided that she can safely have. Could you leave some of an alternative in school so she has something? (You shouldn’t have to but it may help!)

My granddaughter is coeliac and she has been served gluten three times at school in her first few weeks in reception. My daughter made a big complaint because Granddaughter needs to trust adults when being fed .
The school have actually been excellent since then and the caterers have taken the complaints very seriously and have been properly educated about Coeliac.
It’s a disease and not an intolerance !
