To think office jobs are very unhealthy

Sitting at a desk from 9-5 slouched over a screen, hardly moving. I’ve noticed a lot of people also eat at their desk and only get up to go to the bathroom. Before having my dc I always worked full time in a corporate office job but since taking some time off and now going back into it I can really feel the difference in my body after sitting down all day. I only work 3 days a week but during that time don’t take a break as nobody else seems to (it’s a new role) but my gosh I cannot imagine doing this plus the commute every day! Even for the money (I am my no means well off) I would prefer less money but better physical health!

No I'm a lawyer - I can do yoga while doing most of my work and it helps my focus (not meetings unless you count Sukhasana)

How the hell do you work and do yoga??

What work do you do that you can't?

Yes it is, but my dad did manual work most of his life and in spite of being fit needed his hips replacing as soon as he retired and had constant aches and pains.

I feel healthier for having a balance between commuting and working from home and not doing stupid hours these days. It's long hours and stress that really affects my health adversely and I don't do that now. I can get quite a few steps in on my commute but tend to have more convenience food on those days. When I'm at home eating healthily is easier and I potter about, walk the dog and fit in a few chores. Commuting 5 days a week and doing long hours was never particularly healthy. I put a stone and a half on in my first two years as a trainee solicitor which says a lot, as I've always been a proper gym bunny.

My best friend is a horse behaviouralist. She’s outside in all weathers, 30,000 steps a day on average and has broken her back twice. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Professional gardeners tend to do their backs in by their 30s. And on my RHS gardening course the lecturer was great, lovely man but also one of the fattest men I've ever seen.

Well I have to look at a screen and type reports or process data etc etc and spend time on teams calls with clients and colleagues, i’m not sure they’d appreciate a progress meeting with a view of my
arse in downward dog.

I got my first office job in my 30s - would have really struggled in my 20s as I have adhd.

I have to walk about 30m in the morning to work, 30m after work and nip out for lunch at some point.

Ideally I would have a sit stand desk but it's only 2 days in the office.

I have a sit stand desk for the 3 days when I WFH. I also have a walking treadmill at home for under the desk.

I think sit stand desks should be more common.

Summerartwitch · 16/07/2025 21:17

Completely agree.

Humans are not made to be at a desk in one room all day staring at screens. Add to that the daily commute and it just create a really unhealthy sedentary life.

I am 54 and I prioritise my physical and mental health above everything else. I work from home and part-time only.

I use a standing desk and take the stairs and go for a short walk at lunch - but my in office days are still far less healthy.

On WFH days I have time for a run before work and still work a full day and still go for a 25min walk or pilates at lunchtime.
The time.saved from commuting when I WFH makes it all doable.

In office I'm up earlier and still struggling to make up the time and then trying to catch up with DD in the evening (having not seen her all day). It's incomparable.
