I have no passion in life

Interviewing for a job and I have to give a presentation about something I’m passionate about… I’ve come to the sad realisation I’m not passionate about anything! I’ve no hobbies and when I’m not busy working/socialising I’m just relaxing. Please tell me I’m not unreasonable in thinking there must be other people like me with no passions or hobbies?!

Some kind of political opinion? A charitable cause? A beloved pet?

You may have to embellish a bit!

MuckFusk · 16/07/2025 18:59

Of course there are people with no hobbies. Lots of people have no time or energy left over after work. But we all have things we are interested in. For example, do you enjoy films, music, cooking, gardening, games, dance, art etcetera? It could be pretty much anything. It doesn't have to rise to the level of a hobby, as in something you do, and you don't have to actually be "passionate" about it for it to be an interest. If that's the way the assignment is worded, it's silly. Just do it about something you enjoy.

A sport or cooking? Easier to gen up on.

OfficerChurlish · 16/07/2025 19:01

Not unreasonable of you, but your immediate goal (if this has not put you off pursuing the job, and I hope it hasn't) is to make a presentation that demonstrates that you are enthusiastic about something and convinces the viewer to understand why you feel that way. It could be anything, and if your prospective employers are smart, they may be more impressed if you can make a passionate presentation about something that most people would find trivial. Just for example - do you love a particular kind of food? Something you grow in your garden? Something local to your area, your heritage, where you grew up? A book or TV show or film? A sport or outdoor activity? A specific pet, or type of animal? A scent, a sound, a taste? Something that's in fashion or popular at the moment - or out of fashion or unpopular and you still love it?

Passionate is a very strong word....there must be something you enjoy, or are proud off etc.

The idea behind it really isn't the topic. It's more that people generally are their true selves when speaking about the things they love most.

It's basically a test of can you do a presentation confidently, make it interesting, balanced between fun & facts, do you come across as credible and engaging...

Even better of you can link it to something relevant to the job....my passion for travel led to my love of language & culture....I remember my first trip to Italy.....so I studied linguistics at University...which gave me a fantastic career....which is how I ended up her etc. All in a few factual pictures, some fun & entertaining bits and you're done..

okydokethen · 16/07/2025 20:04

Yeah you’ve got to elaborate on something you like. I’d choose reading or maybe photography

AltitudeCheck · 16/07/2025 20:08

What role are you interviewing for and what skills are they looking for?

Turn something a bit average into a stunning presentation and you'll wow far more than someone who climbs mountains but can't deliver a presentation!

Favourite TV show? Favorite household chore? Best MN thread you have ever read? Best tikok /SM account you follow? Favourite fashion trend/ celeb/ band you loved as a teenager?

AnneLovesGilbert · 16/07/2025 20:23

What do you do to relax?

Floatingonahope · 16/07/2025 20:25

Equality? Achievement? Think about your core values

SleepQuest33 · 16/07/2025 20:28

What about your favourite food? Does it have to be serious of can it be a bit funny?
I am absolutely passionate about eating well (no junk) I would choose that as a topic. Is there something similar for you? Your favourite TV program?

Simplegazette · 16/07/2025 20:33

Did you enjoy any particular sports at school or when you were younger? Always handy as you are only on a break from them and just about to restart!

Odiebay · 16/07/2025 20:37

I had to do similar at a work event... Tell a Colleague about a passion of yours. I honestly don't have one.

I went with travel/other cultures in the end. I enjoy going on holiday but wouldn't say it's a passion.

Hollowvoice · 16/07/2025 20:37

I also don't think there's anything I'm passionate about. Normal life is too much for passion!
So I'd think about things I enjoy that I can talk about. For me, cooking.

WellMaybeYouShouldntBeLivingHeeeeeeee · 16/07/2025 20:38

‘Just relaxing’ doing what? Isn’t there anything you’d love to do more of but never get time for?

TheyreLikeUsButRichAndThin · 16/07/2025 20:39

Do it on how you’re passionate about relaxing 🤷‍♀️ that’s admirable, more people need to chill.

Mandarinaduck · 16/07/2025 20:46

The word passionate is a red herring. I've also been caught out by that one in a workshop and someone told me they 'felt sorry' for me not having any passion. Ha ha!!

Just pick something you like or are interested in.

When you go shopping, what do you make a beeline for?
Is there anything that you would be really picky about? Why?
What do you watch on TV and why?
What do you like to read about?
What subjects lead you into animated conversation?
What is a treasured possession and why?
Etc.
