Aibu to get a same day gp appointment for this

For months now my hips have been aching on both sides. Just a general all over ache. Seems worse when I have a busy day (active job, on my feet all day) I'd compare the feeling to SPD in pregnancy. I'm definitely not pregnant and I'm 38.

It's gradually getting worse and worse to the point now by 3 o clock I am hobbling and in pain. In bed at night I have to move every ten mins or so as one side will start aching. The ache sometimes radiates down to my knee if particularly bad.

It's driving me mad, constant pain and really affecting my sleep now.

I have an appointment for 24th but it says it's with a physio.

Should I just wait it out?

If you're hobbling and in pain you need to see a GP for adequate drugs for a start. Have a think about seemingly unconnected symptoms too- is it just hip pain or do you have any autoimmune type symptoms? Any unexplained joint pain is urgent in my opinion. Hope you feel better soon.

You need a diagnosis, which a physio cannot give you. See the GP.

Pippa12 · 16/07/2025 07:00

I would see a gp for pain relief at the very least, assuming you’re already taking paracetamol and ibuprofen regularly (if you can). Even if the physio can solve the issue the releif won’t be immediate and with no sleep you’ll br truly drained by then.

Soontobe60 · 16/07/2025 07:00

I would say, start taking some pain relief - ibuprofen if possible, then you can see if it has any effect. Also, what footwear are you wearing? A physio is likely the best person to see initially as they can assess the cause of your pain and recommend exercises to help. If that doesn’t reduce the pain then you’d go back to the GP for further investigation. So yes, wait to see the physio.

They absolutely can.

😂😂 of course they can!! They are joint and muscular specialists and the best people to see with these symptoms.

HappilyUrbanTrimmer · 16/07/2025 07:05

What painkillers are you taking? You can talk to a pharmacist about better pain management. The pharmacist can tell you when you reach the limit of what they can help with over-the-counter and recommend you make a GP appointment at that point. The physio can help identify the root of the problem. There is nothing useful that could be achieved in a gp appointment unless the pharmacist and the physio cannot offer any further help without a GP's action and you haven't reached that point yet.

jamsandwich5 · 16/07/2025 07:15

I'm not taking any painkillers during the day because they make me really sleepy (and I'm already knackered) but taking ibuprofen and paracetamol at night before bed.

KatyaKat · 16/07/2025 07:18

Agree that the physio will be able to help, but why do ibuprofen and paracetamol make you sleepy? That's not a usual impact of taking those painkillers.

TheShadowOfTheWizard · 16/07/2025 07:20

In not a doctor and I'm not advising you. I have bursitis in both hips, I can relate to what you're saying

Brokenforsummer · 16/07/2025 07:23

Iburofen and paracetamol don’t make people sleepy. You would be unreasonable to ask for an emergency appointment for pain when you haven’t tried taking any over the count pain killers.

ShadesmarBead · 16/07/2025 07:24

I would recommend you request a telephone appointment to discuss stronger analgesia while you wait for the physio assessment.

I would avoid cocodamol if you are concerned about feeling drowsy. Naproxen (taken regularly) most likely to be of benefit.

Crowpigeon · 16/07/2025 07:28

Doc will send you to physio for things like this, but you should be trying brufen at regular intervals in the meantime. If you can’t tolerate it you could go back to the docs explaining you can’t take otc anti inflammatories and can they prescribe some pain relief ahead of your appointment. Anti inflammatories are more than just pain killers, they can be part of the treatment plan to resolve inflammation.

My husband is an osteopath and helps with stuff like this. If you find a decent (non woo) osteopath they would work wonders

BleakAF · 16/07/2025 07:35

I had hip and thigh bursitis during peri, even at night my hips ached. Just started HRT so hopefully that will help. Could your muscular skeletal problems be linked to peri do you think?

At our surgery it’s impossible to see a GP. The closest one gets is a practice nurse or Ask GP online Q&A session, which in any event only happened in the mornings. I know that’s not the point of the thread, but it makes me so spitting furious as ten years ago it wasn’t like this.

Dangermoo · 16/07/2025 08:01

Why be a martyr - just take the appointment.

When I've googled, bursitis comes up. Have wondered if it's that. I'm 38 so could be peri? Have also been feeling generally shit as well.

You are entitled to make a same day appt. You need blood tests. It would be interesting to see what your inflammation markers are. I would be wary of seeing the physio first. I saw a physio yesterday and it was a different one than I saw a month ago, turns out the exercises I was given was making my pain worse as I hadn’t had a proper diagnosis the first time

Paracetamol and ibuprofen have no sedative properties whatsoever, it’s more likely that you are in pain that’s draining you and making you feel tired. In all honesty, the gp will only prescribe analgesics (likely to suggest ibuprofen/paracetamol first anyway!) You might get naproxen.

And if the symptom is indicative of a condition that is not "joint and muscular"? Are you really that stupid?

ForFunGoose · 16/07/2025 14:24

My hip pain was perimenopause related and is gone now with hrt, especially the addition of progesterone ( which is the first hormone to go)

TheGirlattheBack · 16/07/2025 14:25

I suffer from hip pain and find volterol is brilliant for the pain.

What condition are you referring to?
