To say I am surprised that Russia is in the no 2 spot. And Japan is so high.

I expected the UK to take the no 2 spot. Not surprised about the US.

Yeah. It's a hilarious subject.

I'm an outsider with only intermediate Japanese, but it seemed to me Japanese people are also deeply shocked by crimes in a way people here no longer seem to be. I happened to be there when very unpleasant story broke about a rapist. There was a profound shock and disgust and open desire for his death.

Espousing the virtues of Russian society while decrying the UK for having a "passive approach to corruption" is pretty hilarious, yes.

It makes zero sense. This must be a joke. Britain has very strict anti bribery laws. Suggest you do some business (as I have) in Africa and Central America and then come back to us on the UK being a hotbed of corruption.

Sorry just editing to say I'm agreeing with the post I quoted!

It's more the fact the entire Russian state apparatus is entirely corrupt and run wholly for the benefit of Putin-aligned oligarchs and mobsters.

Then there's the drill-down stuff, like newly pressganged recruits being sent to Ukraine in worn-out tennis shoes because someone higher up the military chain of command has pocketed the entire budget for equipment.

It's one of the most endemically corrupt countries on the planet, even by comparison with tinpot African and CA states.

I think we can safely say that Canada has a significantly higher number of active and unapprehended serial killers: there remain several thousand MMIW (missing and murdered Indigenous women), many of them sex workers and with itinerant lifestyles, whose killers have never been identified, many of whom are widely considered to be most likely the victims of serial predators.

Yeah, let's look around us at this wonderful state of affairs here, this world-beating rule of law BoJo made so much of. It is paradise, truly, and our money is so well managed and the rich aren't lining their pockets through lucrative government contracts and concessions. Tower blocks full of people die and those responsible don't get off scot free. That would be corrupt like that there bogeyman on the other side of Europe, and of course there's spits Africa.

Motes and beams, to borrow a metaphor (except that the Christians of Russia and Africa would probably understand the reference without recourse to google).

Anyway, have fun agreeing with one another how great life is. I'm off to work to pay more tax which will 100% not be misappropriated.

I'm not saying life is great I'm just saying that saying the UK has a particular corruption issue is wrong.

I'm not British by the way which might be why I don't have a weird hysteria about criticising (not "spitting on") other countries.

I’d have expected Mexico to be a lot higher

Yes, we're all busy agreeing on how wonderful life is... in a thread about world-wide preponderance of serial-killers... which has somehow been derailed by someone claiming Russia is a paragon of honesty, fairness, and integrity...

Glad you're away though, because maybe then we can get back to the original discussion without being subjected to your deranged nonsense.

Blimey do people really take articles like this at face value? People need to give click bait like that article a little more thought.

The article gets its info from Wikipedia and a research paper. The research paper seems very limited with much of its data dated and little to no acknowledgement of the limitations of their study. If you are looking for statistics to gauge how dangerous a country is you would be better off looking at murder rates rather than serial killer rates. Places like Jamaica, Haiti and Mexico have ridiculously high rates of murder and that’s just the ones reported and logged. Many other countries simply won’t log them. If you think of the amount of time and resources needed to catch a serial killer then it’s obviously only going to be the more affluent and better policed ones that succeed.
