Pelton Tread for Christmas (teenager)

Nina1013 · 15/07/2025 19:21

Teenager tried one in the Peloton shop. Really loved it. She’s the only one in the family who would use it, and I think the biggest attraction is being able to walk/run and watch Netflix….but she really wants one.

Would this be a good Christmas gift or is this a ridiculous idea? I have no idea how much use it would actually get…but it is pretty cool.

Question is about if I would be unreasonable to unveil this as a Christmas gift rather than whether it’s too much to spend/cheaper alternatives are available/she can run outdoors etc (none of which I disagree with!). But if this is something she really wants, would it be a good Christmas surprise or is gym kit just not a Christmas gift kind of thing?

Early teens if it’s relevant….

I realise it’s July but we are mulling over purchasing one for her so it’s more of a would this be better as a Christmas gift kind of question….

I’d wait and see if she keeps mentioning it , we are all guilty of trying something and wanting it but the novelty wears off - I have a pretty expensive treadmill that hasn’t been switched on this year

ThatGladTiger · 15/07/2025 19:25

Jesus! Not for that price!

Get a normal treadmill and put it infront of a tv. 🤯

RCJJ · 15/07/2025 19:26

So yes they are great but they’re expensive. It isn’t a one-off cost of the machine, you must also pay for the monthly membership for the classes.

This did make me laugh as you’re not wrong. But it’s better than a games console, new phone/tablet/laptop in terms of actually having some health benefits too…in my head I think I’m justifying it as ‘tech’ rather than a treadmill…

I own a Peloton bike and am a huge fan, but for a teen I think I'd be looking into a cheaper option.

As the person who paid for the bike to begin with, as well as the ongoing subscription, I'm extremely motivated to get my money's worth. If I was a teen who had it bought for me, that's not going to be the case.

The quality of the equipment and gamification of the leaderboard/quality of instructors is amazing. If your teen is competitive then it may be for her - but if not, you may as well spring for something less expensive.

Glitterybee · 15/07/2025 19:27

I mean if moneys no object then yes why not.

But my walking pad was £100 and I watch tv shows on the iPad while on it. So it basically does the same thing?

Loving the Christmas chat in July…. Personally for me this is when I start planning and thinking about it. Now that we’ve tipped into the 2nd half of the year I find it perfectly acceptable 🙌

Price isn’t a worry, just whether it would be a rubbish present or great present. If I ask her, I lose the element of surprise and I really love surprising people with gifts….

What actually started the post off was me seeing the Boots tenner Tuesdays pop up, and I started thinking of those glorious days where I would be picking up anything and everything in sales throughout the year as long as it was pink, sparkly and ideally with a few unicorns involved…. I loved spreading it over the whole year and shops being full of things she would love, while spending very little and her loving absolutely everything.

Shopping for a teenager is infinitely less fun….!

How keen is she on walking/running? Is this general fitness or competition training?

For general fitness, I'd say it's overkill for an active teen. If she wants one, I imagine she's quite sporty. If she isn't that into exercise in general, she'll get bored in five minutes and it will sit gathering dust.

Honestly, it’s an attempt to let her her keep fit and active if she wants to at home, in a gadgety way. I suppose it’s no deeper than she really liked it and I think it’s too expensive to buy just because she wants one, but equally I’m not sure if it would be suitable for Christmas. I’m probably (definitely) overthinking it!

Very fit, school timetable includes hours and hours of games, matches on weekends etc. So no actual need for the ability to run at home either!

Ooo have you got a link to your version?

DH loves getting his steps in but it's a challenge when having to listen to training sessions for work - maybe this is the answer?

OP I think given your description of your dd week and levels of activity there really is no need for this and she will not use it after a couple of novelty tries

LividVermiciousKnid · 15/07/2025 19:46

If I had the money and the space I'd have one in a flash.

I have neither. You have both.

So buy the thing and let her enjoy it! Yes, you could get a walking pad and a telly with an aerial for less. But that'd be the same as getting Adidas two stripe off the market when you wanted the real deal.

You've got money. Why wouldn't you just get the one thing she's liked? You can always flog it by Easter if she's not turned it on.

On that basis I'd think of something else. I mean, I'm sure she would love seeing it on Christmas morning, but it's a gadget for gadget's sake. I know you said you could afford it, etc, but it might be better to use that money to get her something less likely to be a five-minute wonder.

Serious question - what? I am genuinely struggling with gifts at this age and stage!
