can’t find a single thread on it. I’m shocked by this news and can’t believe no one’s talking about it.

Revealed: £7bn secret airlift as 18,500 Afghans are brought to Britain

Today after 23 months of being gagged, the Daily Mail can reveal the scheme to bring in thousands of Afghans, and how Parliament has been deliberately kept oblivious.

I've just heard about it on the Radio 4 news at 5pm. It's indeed shocking, but nothing really surprises me anymore tbh.

naturalcrackle111 · 15/07/2025 19:06

Same, everyday feels like there is a new shock with this country.

One has to wonder what else has been and is being hidden.

hattie43 · 15/07/2025 19:24

Another reason not to trust governments

Weepixie · 15/07/2025 19:26

I read about if this afternoon but I’d never start a thread, especially about something like this which will become extremely ugly

Sunshineandoranges · 15/07/2025 19:30

There was an error about three years ago in disclosing the identity of Afghan people who had helped the British government and if the taliban had seen it those people and their families would have been in serious danger. So a notice was put n it to keep it secret until the people who were under threat could be brought to safety in the uk. A national newspaper was pressuring the current govt to release the information.

That's the intention, sadly. Frankly, mn should take stuff like this down, its just political baiting, I don't on come here for this shite

SunnySideDeepDown · 15/07/2025 19:32

I don’t find it surprising at all. Someone fucked up, intentionally or unintentionally and those afghans don’t deserve to be beheaded by the taliban for someone’s cock up. So they’ve been transported here. Some may be happy but others have been ripped from their extended family and friends and culture and will feel angry about being put in this situation so are going to sue.

Of course it was hidden, if it was known, the Taliban may have fought back in other ways.

It’s a delicate situation and I’m just forever grateful my life isn’t as vulnerable.

Sunshineandoranges · 15/07/2025 19:33

Why ugly ? The government was doing the right thing. Those people either worked directly for the British military or helped covertly. They would have been tortured or killed in Afghanistan.

nocoolnamesleft · 15/07/2025 19:34

The government seriously fucked up, directly putting lives at risk. They bloody well should have done something to try to save the people they had endangered.

I absolutely shudder to think what some people, particularly those who helped fight the Taliban, have been going through in that past few years under Taliban rule. These people were betrayed and left to rot after being led to believe they would have some form of help and protection.

SALaw · 15/07/2025 19:36

Is there a thread about every single news story?

WhereIsMyJumper · 15/07/2025 19:36

This is truly shocking

AppropriateAdult · 15/07/2025 19:37

What are you shocked by, OP? That the blunder happened, or that the government did the right thing by removing these people from a dangerous situation, and kept it under wraps for their own safety?

Genevieva · 15/07/2025 19:39

It raises so many issues, from data security, to misuse of super injunctions, to the whereabouts and safety of the individuals, to the extent of our ongoing responsibility towards them verses our own national security concerns. I would hazard a guess that a lack of reliable record keeping and a tendency to have multiple and similar names will make many of these people impair led to identify reliably.

Do I think lessons will be learnt? No. Do I think anyone sufficiently senior will be sacked? No. Do I think the taxpayer will pick up the bill when already struggling, yes.

Raquelos · 15/07/2025 19:40

I'm not sure what there is to say tbh.

Was it an almighty fuck up? Well, obviously, yes.
Was there a moral obligation to try to extract people who had been our allies, put in danger as a result of said fuck up? Also, yes IMO.

I can absolutely see why it was subject to a superinjunction, given the sensitivity of the information and the potentially fatal consequences of allowing it to become public. I can also see why it was a very expensive operation.

What am I missing?

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 15/07/2025 19:41

I’ll never forget the scenes of people trying to hang on to the final aeroplanes leaving Afghanistan. It was horrific. All the people who’d had their names released deserved nothing less than being transported out of the country. Our government completely messed up. It was the least they could do.

Sadly, our loyal allies in Afghanistan don't have someone like Joanna Lumley fighting their corner, like the Ghurkas did. Otherwise this would have happened a long time ago.

coxesorangepippin · 15/07/2025 19:45

It keeps us plebs scrolling the daily mail, getting worked up about immigration, rather than revolting against the Royals

Some people help a foreign army because they need the money. Others because they believe in the change they promise to bring about. A small number intend to infiltrate, spy and even kill their employers. Some are even double agents. They all do this knowing the risks. I’d like to think we’d do our best by them by only entering a conflict we intend to win and by helping with the rebuild programme. I’m not wholly convinced that this extends to resettling an entire city’s worth of people in the U.K. The extent of employment will vary enormously, from years of unwavering commitment to a very short stint. People who have independent lives there become infantilised here, due to lack of language, literacy and numeracy skills. It’s a very tricky issue.

A super injunction to protect lives is not an issue. Why do you think it is?

Why would you want to know the whereabouts of people who are at threat and also whether they are safe? They won’t be safe if their whereabouts is revealed.

Platypusdiver · 15/07/2025 19:50

I have mixed feelings about her work. I absolutely agree regarding pensions, but the right to settle in the U.K. has decimated communities on Gurkha recruiting areas of Nepal. They used to go home, bring their money and become revered and affluent community leaders who set a good example to the next generation. Instead those villages are hollowed out.

The super injunction wasn’t to protect lives. It was to stop us knowing that they had failed to protect lives.
