To think Religious education in schools should be replaced by AI education

IsitRainin · 15/07/2025 17:48

Looking at how quickly AI is advancing, our education system needs to be overhauled.
There's no benefit of subjects like Religious education in today's world and people can learn about it from their family. This should be replaced by AI studies and other STEM subjects which will prepare the Children to be ready and up to date with future advancement and at par with children from China, USA and rest of the world.

Can anyone explain to me what had been the benefit of teaching religions for 5*38 = 190 hours every school year?

Easy. Loads of countries manage it. The UK is quite a outlier in having mandatory religious education.

Avoiding to Google - which I will accept may not always be correct but I trust in general - the only countries without RE on their school curriculum are USA and France.
Interesting 🤔

From my beloved chatgpt
Summary of major countries with no religious education in the public curriculum:

France (except Alsace-Moselle)

Slovenia

United States

Japan

China

Where have you come up with those figures?

IsitRainin · 15/07/2025 22:03

Most of the above listed countries are doing better than UK so they must be doing something right.

So children learn the facts of the various religions and other belief systems that exist. That's why is taught. It's teaching facts. The knowledge is the benefit.
You can put that argument for pretty much anything taught in schools beyond basic reading, writing and maths.
What is the benefit of learning - for example - Shakespeare plays? Or about the Vikings? Or the names of the planets in the solar system?

TheLudditesWereRight · 15/07/2025 22:05

Look again. The key word is mandatory. I have no quibble with it being an option but I do think people overstate its value. You could cover the basics in a week. And an understanding of the main schools of philosophy is just as useful culturally.

Yeah that’s 5 hours a week?! We get under an hour a week… 31.5 hours a year.

TheLudditesWereRight · 15/07/2025 22:08

No. There are loads where it is not mandatory which is the point I was making.

Yes it's usually one lesson a week in most schools - and in many secondary schools a lesson is actually less than an hour long.

The key here is major.
These are the major countries with big economies and GDP, that's why they matter.

China has mandatory lessons on Marxism and socialism. Would you prefer that?

I've just realised that should say "According to Google"
(not avoiding)

ForeverScout · 15/07/2025 22:10

Is that the notoriously inaccurate chatgpt? The one that gave me say, the wrong visa info for visiting another country (complete with links to its govt source which said the exact opposite of its summary?)

USA may not have it in their official curriculum but in many states education is heavily influenced by and policed by religious groups. Trump didn't happen in a vacuum and the current slide to christo-fascism in some states is likely to continue, with schools being a major battleground. They may be doing "better" in some ways but no way in hell would I be raising my kids and especially not my daughter in any of these states, which are becoming increasingly religious and authoritarian - an incredibly toxic mix.

Lavenderflower · 15/07/2025 22:11

I want my child to be taught about religion - it is a good introduction into ethics, philosophy (and law).

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 15/07/2025 22:11

Shithitthefan · 15/07/2025 22:07

Exactly. Schools are not spending 190 hours a year on religious education unless they’re a religious school.

Needmorelego · 15/07/2025 22:16

@IsitRainin @TheLudditesWereRight as I said upthread in my school days RE was considered the doss lesson that no one cared about.
Perhaps just tell your children to spend the less than one hour a week that they will be in an RE lesson staring out the window daydreaming and not listening.
Problem solved.

RampantIvy · 15/07/2025 22:17

With increasing numbers of people identifying as non religious and atheist, there is no benefit of shoving religion down young children's throats.

Can anyone explain to me what had been the benefit of teaching religions for 5.38 = 190 hours every school year?

@IsitRainin the benefit is hopefully to teach tolerance and avoid the kind of bigotry and ignorance that you clearly display in every one of your posts on this thread.

The first response from @Tudorduxbury pretty much nailed it - You clearly have no understanding of modern RE, which is much more about ethics at secondary level.

You're one of those posters who have no idea what you're talking about and no willingness to learn, aren't you.
There's no point explaining why you're wrong and why the subject called religion, PHILOSOPHY AND ETHICS should be kept on the curriculum is there.

"You're one of those posters who have no idea what you're talking about and no willingness to learn, aren't you."

Yes, this was my thought. You have no idea what it is you don't know OP.

If you don't like my opinion, then it becomes bigotry?
If I think teaching about religions is waste of time, that's my opinion, you can crack on with whatever you want.
Do you have a better argument than calling others bigots who you don't agree with.
