To think WLI probably won't work for me

I am now very overweight, which does concern me. I have several health issues already, and don't need any extra! I'm now getting major issues from water retention- I don't know if that's related.

My weight has increased a lot in the last year.

Reasons I think WLI might not suit me:

I have ADHD. I routinely forget meals/meds. Before children (& if they're away), it's not unusual for me to skip 2-5 consecutive meals if I'm involved in tasks.

I have severe physical disabilities that stop me exercising, or that make it particularly difficult. I use mobility aids to get around and usually have at least one open wound (covered, of course). Also, exercise makes my ME/CFS worse.

I have chronic fatigue. When I eat on workdays it's usually high calorie/caffeine, in a desperate attempt to stay awake/employed. At home I can just go for a nap. Unfortunately, the last few weeks at work I couldn't stop myself falling asleep.

I have sleep apnoea. Basically my body tries to suffocate me when I sleep, so I get to wear the world's least sexy mask to sleep in. Hospital have told me I'm currently safe to drive and this is reviewed regularly. I have never fallen asleep driving. Thankfully I feel extreme tiredness before falling asleep, so nap before driving if needed. Losing weight should help the sleep apnoea.
If driving when tired, I do eat sugar free sweets amongst other things eg open window.

I am very limited by my IBS in what I actually can eat.

TLDR: I often don't recognise/act on hunger, while I'd like to change eating/exercise habits my IBS and physical disabilities make this particularly challenging.

Diets are limited by what I can actually eat (most of which isn't 'on plan'. The rapid weight increase has been indirectly caused by my ME/CFS. I used to use caffeine tablets until the GP's pharmacist pitched a fit due to my already high blood pressure. That's now under good control.

All I can suggest is discuss it with your GP or consultant. It's a once weekly injection so you could set a reminder on your phone and ditto meals. I keep it v simple and always have a protein yoghurt or smoothie for breakfast, a selection of rice cakes, cheese, homous fruit and salad for lunch and protein plus veg for dinner. Not a lot of cooking or faff. Given your other conditions though, I have no idea how it might interact or affect those so definitely consult.

Notsuchafattynow · 15/07/2025 07:57

Maybe speak to your GP?

I am not medically qualified, but have been on WLI and can't see anything you've written that would not make them work (unless there's a contradiction with your current meds) so worth scoping out with GP?

(But then buy privately if you don't meet the NHS threshold for prescribing).

Sounds like you have lots to gain if they do work.

(There is unconfirmed reports on how they improve ADHD symptoms amongst a large list of other things).

All you can do is ask your GP.

With all the other medications you're taking, you may or may not be a candidate, but GP will be best placed to advise.

I have an underactive thyroid and thought I would not be suitable due to my medication so put off taking it, but when I actually asked an expert, it was okay.

I've had no issues and lost 3 stone so far. I absolutely love it and will stay on it forever if possible as the knock on effects to my health have been amazing.

Sajacas · 15/07/2025 08:03

If you have the time take a look at a ketogenic diet. It can help with ADHD, and chronic fatigue.
A good place to start if you want more information is the Metabolic Mind youtube channel.

magicpant · 15/07/2025 08:05

It will definitely work for you. You have to put in a bit of effort when it comes to planning and organising your meals to ensure you eat, but it will work.

i have reversed my sleep aponea in the 8 months i have been using MJ. I also have ADHD and it’s helped my focus and ability so arranging meals has been a breeze tbh. Exercise isn’t particularly important- good if you can but it won’t prevent you losing weight if you can’t.

Without sounding rude, I recognise my previous self in your OP, it’s all excuses as to why you can’t. You haven’t given it a go. It changed my life.

homeowlly · 15/07/2025 08:08

I didn't vote because I don't know. I think you need to speak to your GP before taking these though due to your complex health issues. You may still have to pay for your own medication but your GP should hopefully advise you in if this is a good course of action for you.

ExtraOnions · 15/07/2025 08:12

You need to talk to a medical professional. I’ll tell you this about exercise though. I’ve lost nearly 5.5 stones on the jabs, and not done any exercise at all. I’m waiting on a knee operation…which compromises things. So being able to exercise is not a pre-requisite to loosing weight.

You must be eatIng now, as you are gaining weight, so you must be shopping / have food in the house … make better choices when shopping, so when you open the fridge you see plenty of lean protein,

Thing is, no eating plan is going to work, if you just come up with lists of excuses as to why it won’t work. You have to be ready to commit.

SilenceInside · 15/07/2025 08:12

I don’t see anything in what you’ve written that would mean that WLI wouldn’t work for you. I know there are people on the long running support threads for Mounjaro who have ADHD, physical disabilities that mean exercise is limited/not possible, that have sleep apnoea, IBS, chronic fatigue….

If losing weight would improve your health then, assuming you qualify and none of your existing medications would be an issue, it’s worth a try I’d have thought?

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 15/07/2025 08:13

Have you looked at ADHD meds?

I have me/cfs, adhd (and autistic) and on Mounjaro...

But skipping meals isn't great mixed with something that suppresses appetite which would be my only worry for you. I've had to be strict about making sure I eat enough on Mounjaro and it could be tempting to not eat all day then eat whatever is to hand.

But adhd meds have really helped my executive function, the ability to plan and organise. Not perfect but so much better.

The combination of mounjaro and elvanse in particular have meant I can now walk and have lost weight and am managing so much better. I spent years thinking there was not much hope and this year has proved to me there is.

Id give both MJ and adhd meds a go....

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 15/07/2025 08:16

Also for me mounjaro is anti inflammatory which in my case helped my mobility.

HelloHattie · 15/07/2025 08:16

It’ll work but whether you’ll get them with your history I have no idea. Ask your GP

Wallywobbles · 15/07/2025 08:23

Massive of positive outcomes for ADHD. And loosing weight is just such a positive outcome. There’s an amazing Reddit thread on unexpected outcomes of taking mounjaro.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/07/2025 09:11

It will literally help with all of the conditions you have detailed.

the most important thing is you only inject once a week and it doesn’t have to be at the same time. I’ve even done it days either side. I don’t stick to any sort of diet either apart from ‘eat protein first’ so I eat a hard boiled egg or a packet of cooked chicken first (or I’d just snack on cheese or sweet stuff if I didn’t)

so I’ve got it down to one rule and I write my injection on my phone so the next week I know the day I injected.

you can do this Flowers

tostaky · 15/07/2025 09:14

Try it, you have nothing to lose (apart from a few pounds!) see how it goes after one month. You dont have to commit for any amount of time.
i wish i did it sooner!

KitsyWitsy · 15/07/2025 09:17

What about all that makes it not likely to work? It will literally help with all those things. Definitely learn more about it before you write it off and don’t be so pessimistic.

TerrierCollector · 15/07/2025 11:05

Yes, it will help you with all of that stuff. There are tons of people on Reddit who say it's helped with their ADHD and that they've basically cured their sleep apnea by losing weight. I think I even saw someone saying it helped with CFS, although I can't find it now.

I haven't taken it myself (only a few pounds overweight), but I'm fascinated by this medication, and I really think it could be revolutionary for so many, not just for people who need to lose weight.

Swan6 · 15/07/2025 11:10

You sound like you are talking yourself out of the injections
If you can afford, and you will be accepted, then I say you have nothing to loose by trying and everything to gain.
I have lost 7 stone in 8 months on them.
But
I downloaded a calories tracking app
And I don't go over 1200 calories a day
Mostly I'm on 1000 a day
I am frequently hungry,day and night .
But I needed to get some weight of fast as my BMI was 54
I swim every day ,but other than that I have no opportunity to exercise

MiddleAgedDread · 15/07/2025 11:12

This just reads like a list of excuses. Do you actually want to loose weight? Because if you do you'll find a way to do despite the obstacles in your way.
You don't need to do exercise to loose weight, the majority of weight loss comes from what you eat.
Issues like your sleep apnea, fatigue, mobility will all be improved if you loose weight.
Using high calorie foods and caffeine to get you through a work day will be causing more harm than good and resulting in your body crashing when it's not getting those foods and is no doubt making your IBS worst too. You need to eat 3 regular meals a day, drink plenty of water and you'll feel a whole load better to start with! What do you feed the kids? Can you not eat with them?

Hankunamatata · 15/07/2025 11:19

Adhd household. I use alexa to remind everyone to takes meds, eat

I meal plan for oldest dc as he can have disorganised eating. We batch cook and then freeze his meals for the week so he just has to zap them.
