To be disappointed in DD’s SATS results?

CucumberSalads1 · 14/07/2025 22:15

I feel terrible for being disappointed, but she got 109 for maths, 109 for reading and 114 for SPAG.

She has historically always been greater depth. And I suppose I’m just concerned she’ll be streamed based on the “expected” results.

We didn’t do much prep at home at all, just looked at the odd question here and there for a week or so before.

I know these are good scores (before I get flamed)… she was just so close to greater depth and the scores aren’t that consistent with her ability.

I know I’m probably BU, but we all just want the best for our kids, don’t we? I don’t want this to hold her back in any way.

I can guarantee it will make absolutely no difference. With those amazing scores she is certain to be in set 1, if that’s the way her secondary school streams, and the rest is history. No one will look at them again.

Fatsnowflake · 14/07/2025 22:21

My daughter got similar scores and she got 7 grade 9s and 3 8s at GCSE and is on track for 4 A*s at A Level. Honestly- those scores are great.

Kreepture · 14/07/2025 22:22

good grief, of course you're being unreasonable.

No-one gives a fuck about SAT's scores, and nor should you.

Catwoman8 · 14/07/2025 22:23

They are good scores, what would you have been satisfied with?

zeddybrek · 14/07/2025 22:24

Are these marks out of 120?
So SPAG equates to 95%, that is incredible!
But as a former teacher and parent of a year 6 child, SATs really don't matter.

mynameiscalypso · 14/07/2025 22:26

I remember being disappointed with my own SATS results back in the day - I can’t remember what they were but I expect they were similar (good but not exceptional). If it makes you feel any better, I have had a stellar academic career since. It was one of the things that made me realise that you can only coast so much and sometimes you actually need to do homework/revision.

Not really. They are scaled scores so 100 is the average. Ops child has done really well.

@CucumberSalads1 secondary schools shouldn't be doing any kind of streaming or setting based on SATs since they're officially supposed to be measuring the quality of teaching and learning generally in a school.

Mischance · 14/07/2025 22:31

Write out 100 times ....

SATs do not matter
SATs do not matter
SATs do not matter ...................

Jamfirstest · 14/07/2025 22:32

My DDs scores were higher than that but she was still put in middle streams at secondary.then they did their own assessments and put her in top sets. So sats inconsequential even though she did well.

mrsanflowerpot · 14/07/2025 22:32

DS got exceptionally good SATs results with GD and nearly full marks in everything, we’re really proud of him. He also went to his induction on Thursday and lost his tie. His tie…!

DD has just done her GCSEs and we’re tied up in knots about whether she’ll do well enough to get back into sixth form to do her chosen subjects, if she’d done her SATs she probably would have been on the lower end of EXS. She has never so much as lost a pen, has just qualified to coach younger children in an elite sport, and got a Saturday job at a local supermarket her friends were all turned down for. DS is unlikely to go on this path.

Kids - they make their own way whatever exam results say (I type muttering about having to buy a new tie before he even starts!).

BlondieMuver · 14/07/2025 22:34

YABU!

My dd is just finishing Yr6, She didn't do SATs.

They don't matter!

You’ve not bothered so much with the SPAG since then eh? 😉

Aren't they out of 120? Is this just a "humble-brag"?

Oaktre878 · 14/07/2025 22:44

Omg look at the state of the world at the moment, how can you even be stressed about this 🤯

UnlimitedBacon · 14/07/2025 22:44

🙄

Neemie · 14/07/2025 22:48

SATS don’t matter at all. The only thing to take away from this is that very high results generally require effort as well as ability.

zeibesaffron · 14/07/2025 22:51

My DD failed SPAG shes got 3 A’s at Alevel in Maths, Psychology and Biology - why would you worry about meaningless tests?? just enjoy the summer holidays- they re stream at secondary anyway!

Moonlightdust · 14/07/2025 22:52

“Greater Depth - Working at greater depth within the expected standard and has a strong understanding of the curriculum. Children with a scaled score of 110 and above are included in this group.”

So your daughter was in this category and very close with her other 2 scores. She did fantastically. I hope you didn’t show your disappointment!

OverripeBananaBread · 14/07/2025 22:52

I've got 2 teens.

One didn't take SATs due to covid, one I have no recollection of the results as it all paled into insignificance compared to the terminal illness and loss of a parent we were going through at the time (so absolutely no way she got to do her best either).

Both went to secondary where they were tested and setted in the first few weeks and sets are adjusted after termly testing. Both have never been below top set. Both on track for really good GCSE grades.

SATs mean absolutely nothing and you're mad to think that above average results are in any way detrimental.

TheShyMumX · 14/07/2025 22:54

I work in a school - SATs results mean absolutely nothing! The worst part of this is your potential negativity being picked up by her. Tell her you are proud she did a great job.

Kids start year 7 and are usually taught initially in form groups so they get to make a stronger bond with peers or in a vague ‘set’ while teachers make their own assessments and by the next term they are then put in actual sets based on ability in English, Maths and science. All other subjects will be quite random to fit timetables etc.
SATs are purely a test on the effectiveness of primary school teaching and not much of that is relevant to secondary school teaching.
Parents of ‘high achievers’ are often surprised when their angel gets put in a middle set rather than a higher one because the same with children who have appeared ‘less able’ through SATs results but actually show to have a much greater grasp of the secondary curriculum, particularly with English/Literacy.

Aspanielstolemysanity · 14/07/2025 22:54

Sats don't matter.
Our secondary re tests them and juggles sets around as needed all the way up to GCSE

And at the end of the day, success and happiness in life is about a lot more than grades
