My son sat his mock GCSEs. He has special needs and he’s in a mainstream with an ehcp. He’s gutted he got u in every subject, even he said I tried my best. I’m devastated how much it’s affected his mental health:(
Gutted for him

That must be very upsetting. Perhaps a chat with the school about his options, whether he’s getting all the adjustments needed etc would be a good way forward.

Jabberwok · 14/07/2025 21:56

Was it likely that he was going to get u? Has the school flagged this? If not I'd be very upset and demanding a meeting as to what needs to happen next.

If this was flagged perhaps you should have laid some groundwork and prepared him for this outcome

School should be on this.

there are qualifications below gcse level called entry levels. You can do them for maths and English and some gcse subjects. Ideally he’d be dual entered to sit both GCSEs and entry levels so that he does leave with some qualifications.

what if any exam support does he have? Reader, scribe etc?

CarrotVan · 14/07/2025 21:58

Perhaps they can reduce his timetable so he focuses on the core subjects?

Bufftailed · 14/07/2025 21:58

So sorry. We have a terrible system which leaves children in this position. The school should have some options for him - fewer GCSEs or BTECs

Whoooo · 14/07/2025 22:16

So, with his ehcp, what exam access arrangements did he have?
Extra time? Reader, scribe?
If not you need to contact the school senco and exams officer to ensure these are put in place.
Also, he could sit a reduced number of subjects.
There are also functional skills qualifications for maths and English which are accepted for some HE courses.
