If you have an outdoor sofa, do you take all the padding / cushions off every night?

That really! I say we should because of foxes pooping on it, DH thinks it’s ridiculous.

We get fox poo in our garden almost every night.

It’s under a covered part of our garden, so no risk of rain.

YANUB - yes take the cushions and padding off
YABU - no leave them

No. Our outdoor furniture is on the lanai by the pool. The pool and lanai are caged. We live in Florida so no foxes here but plenty of alligators, which is why the pool is caged.

😮

We are in south London too. We cover the whole table, sofas and cushions with a heavy duty rain cover each night and put the cushions in the shed if rain is forecast. No sign of fox poo although occasionally some stray hairs. Our foxes tend to prefer to lurk on top of the sheds though so maybe they don't like to be next to the house?

We have waterproof covers on ours, and then they get stored inside over winter.

We take them in if rain is forecast. The waterproof cover flaps noisily in the wind and keeps us awake😂

CatamaranViper · 14/07/2025 21:08

I have every intention of taking them in but I always forget so they get rained on. They're canny minging now tbf

Nourishinghandcream · 14/07/2025 21:16

No but then again our sofa is under the veranda so does not get wet.
If horizontal rain is due then we would pop the cover on. In winter the cushions are put in the garage loft but can easily be got at if we want to sit outdoors.

No i put a large old towel or sheet on it and just cover whole thing with rainproof cover for the night ( cat sometimes goes inside if raining) keeps dry as long as cover is secured down from wind. Never seen fox in my garden.

plasticbookcars · 14/07/2025 21:29

Nope. The cushions are ‘shower proof’ so they go out in the Spring and stay out till autumn when the whole sofa is wrapped in a sturdy all weather zip cover for the winter. I couldn’t be bothered with dragging them to the shed every night (only to have to knock spiders off them the next day).

No but we bought a waterproof cover

This. I’m worried about the foxes destroying our cushions. I’m not sure they would but we often find traces of destruction as we have a lot of foxes visiting garden. We always cover the seats at night, it only take a a couple of minutes.

South London here too and foxes a real pain in the arse. When we put together our new outdoor sofa with cushions, the doorbell rang and in the time it took to answer it and return to the garden, a foxy fucker had taken a massive dump on it. So now the cushions and covers come in every night.

This comment makes me feel far less paranoid! What is going on with South London foxes? If I notice that I have accidentally left anything out overnight - a water gun, anything - I think “oh damn that will have been peed on/ pooped on now”.

What is going on with the south London foxes?! They’re really sending us a message!

We bought a new sofa around April. Has lots of big and thick cushions.
Bought a Keter storage box and planned to put the cushions in each night and over winter and use a heavy duty cover I bought on the rattan frame over winter.

But we haven’t used the storage box over summer because moving the large amount of cushions daily is a massive fag (really tiring) and the sofa without cushions isn’t attractive. So instead we put the heavy duty cover on nightly, which takes maybe 1 minute to do. It’s big and because the set is square, easy to put on. This has worked well.

Im the winter we will bag the cushions (kept from when buying) and use the Keter box and put the cover on the frame.

Am alternative winter solution I’ve heard and might try is laying them out on the spare double bed in guest room and putting duvet over them. Think it’s a pretty good idea if you have a spare room that doesn’t have guests very often.

Haven’t had fox probs. But one of our cats likes to get under the cover and sleep on it, even on a hot day if the cover hasn’t been removed. Must be be very sweaty under there. All good so far.
