Do you ever cringe at something you said and it sits with you for days

Have a plasterer over at the moment, relatively attractive and he asked if the noise was ok (I work from home) I said yes it's fine I can't really hear it. My manager knows I have work going on so it's no issue, but I can't really hear the noise.

I don't even know why I mentioned my manager, he doesn't care if my manager knows or not. This happened yesterday and I'm still sat here cringing in my small office hoping I don't have to come back out to face him. Completely pathetic I know 🤣

I remember saying something to a guy at work something that could have been a double entendre (it wasn't and I didn't fancy him) he just stared at me until I blushed crimson, still remember it many years later.

I remember being in a fancy wine bar with a friend when we were in our 20s. I was pretending to the barman that I knew loads about wine. He brought over a Rioja and I asked where it was from. He said Spain and I nodded thoughtfully and then asked if he had any Rioja from Italy as I preferred Italian wines.

I still to this day cringe when I think about it.

I don’t understand what you think you did that was cringe?

I once asked my line manager if we could have it off.

I meant the air conditioner

GoodBones85 · 14/07/2025 14:26

Another one here still cringing about things I said/did in the 1990s…….🤦‍♀️

JustAboutMuddlingThrough · 14/07/2025 14:28

On a regular basis! My most recent one I told my Best Friend that I like her, as in like her like her.

Days? I have made some random cringe comments to strangers that still pop into my mind decades later.

Ha! I was about to say that! I still cringe over things much younger me has said or done!

When I was a teen my gran had chemo and lost all her hair.

One day she gave me some of her posh shampoo because she didn’t need it anymore. I said ‘well if you’re sure you don’t need it?’.

I still think of this often. Especially the look she gave me!

Allseeingallknowing · 14/07/2025 14:30

OP- what is the relevance of the plasterer being attractive?

This reminds me of another cringy thing I’ve done! I was 20 and got invited to a 30th birthday party. I felt very sophisticated and grown up, especially as the birthday girl was a professional sommelier.

So of course I bought her a bottle of wine as a gift. A £5 supermarket wine. It was all I could afford as a poor student and I meant well. Looking back now, I’m horrified and wonder what she did with it 😂

First day at college, teacher said let's go around the room and each say a little something about ourselves. I was a socially anxious mess with zero social skills and blurted out "I like dogs". I looked and sounded SUCH a dick. That was 28 years ago and I'm cringing as I type. There are plenty of other examples, but that's all you're getting.🤐

I'd want to be your friend from that Dappy!

harriethoyle · 14/07/2025 14:42

@mabelineandme in 1997 (so 28 years ago...) on my first day at university, I met a fellow course student and he said "Hi my name's Bob" and I replied "Oh so is mine!".

My name is not Bob. I obviously had to come clean. Mortifying.

Still think about that at 3am some mornings 😂

harriethoyle · 14/07/2025 14:43

@Dappy777 you're my sister from another mister 😆

Dontlletmedownbruce · 14/07/2025 14:55

I recently said to my visually impaired friend 'it's soo annoying I need reading glasses'.

As a teen I worked in a shoe shop and we always bent down to fit the shoe then asked the customer to stand up or walk around to check if it fit, as I'm sure you all know. Well one day I served a customer who was wheelchair bound... you know the rest. It's only been 33 years of cringe for that.

In your defence, her hair could have grown back.
Your question was entirely reasonable.
