DH annoyed at me over £120

OneLoftyLemonViewer · 13/07/2025 22:45

To cut a really long story short, we had ordered a bed base from a local shop for £120.
When it was delivered there were scuff marks on a few places. The owner admitted this was an ex display and said the scuff marks wouldnt be visible as they’d be covered with a mattress. DH started to complain that we hadn’t paid for an ex display bed and wanted to return it. The owner agreed. DH asked me if that was OK, expecting me to confirm but I told him it’s fine, we’ll take it.

DH is angry because he thinks we’ve overpaid for a bed. He’s also told me, “I have no common sense / business acumen / survival skills.” “You must always negotiate.”

AIBU to have accepted the bed?

Well you paid full price and got given an ex display bed that’s scuffed so yes you should have let DH swap or more sensibly, negotiate a partial refund.

Peawhack · 13/07/2025 22:48

I wouldn’t have wanted to pay full price for a marked ex display bed either.

Picklechicken · 13/07/2025 22:49

Unless you were told it was ex display when you got it I’d be expecting some money back.

vincettenoir · 13/07/2025 22:51

In this situation if it was important to him to return it I would have backed him up. But, it’s no biggie in the scheme of things. You guys should have worked out how you wanted to progress it between you before involving the retailer. That might be something to take from this. Although he’s laying it on a bit thick to say you have no survival skills.

AgileCat · 13/07/2025 22:52

I would have expected to be offered at least a small discount unless the shop owner had been clear from the outset that the only bed in that size /model available was the ex display one. I did once accept a sleeping bag that had been on window display but I did so in the full knowledge andI really liked the design and didn't want to have to look elsewhere.

Darragon · 13/07/2025 22:54

Yeah you undermined him massively and screwed yourself over, of course he's miffed.

randomchap · 13/07/2025 22:57

So the owner tried to fob you off with damaged goods, your husband got him to agree to return it, and then you said it's OK you'll accept them. Without even asking for a discount?

£120 is a significant amount of money to most people

YouWillFindMeInTheGarden · 13/07/2025 22:58

Reverse?

nocoolnamesleft · 13/07/2025 22:59

If you needed it now to sleep on, the logical thing would have been to negotiate a partial refund.

SomeOfTheTrouble · 13/07/2025 23:00

I’d have asked for a partial refund as compensation for the product being damaged.

SilverHammer · 13/07/2025 23:23

You’re a mug. Why pay full price for something substandard. I agree with your husband.

Thepossibility · 14/07/2025 00:09

I'd be annoyed at you. You didn't even have to go out of your way to complain, or return it, he was already doing it. Owner was a CF trying to get you to pay full price on damaged goods.

DoYouReally · 14/07/2025 00:10

I agree with your husband.

Why did you overrule him and pay full price for something that wasn't as ordered?

lostinthesunshine · 14/07/2025 00:18

I don’t think he’s annoyed at the £120. He’s annoyed at you undermining him.

This.

It's the principle. Should've given you a discount at least.

Hankunamatata · 14/07/2025 00:22

So ask for 50% off

uncomfortablydumb60 · 14/07/2025 00:24

You were mis sold a brand new bed and that’s what you should’ve got.
They should have told you they have an ex display model available at a generous discount before delivering it
I’m on the fence because I’m like you, and don’t sweat the small stuff, but In reality DH was right about the bed
He had no right to speak to you like shit, and should apologise

Exactly. If it's still serviceable and the scuffs aren't visible then why wouldn't you keep it and ask for a discount?!

NuffSaidSam · 14/07/2025 00:36

I think keep it and negotiate a discount would have been the best solution.

You've ended up with the short end of the deal when you didn't need to. You undermined him/failed to support him. I can see why he's annoyed with you.

latetothefisting · 14/07/2025 00:40

Why was yours the overriding vote?
If he was unhappy why did you get to be the one to decide to keep it?

You're both being unreasonable- you for definitely saying "no it's fine we'll take it" when it clearly bothered him - why didn't you just say "well I don't really mind so up to you," or "i dont mind keeping this one but can you knock something off instead?" if you honestly didn't care? Also I agree with him - why would you want a scruffy used bed when your dh had already done the hard part and negotiated a better deal? Unless you're drip feeding and had already got rid of your old bed so refusing this one would mean sleeping on the floor then I don't understand your reasoning.

But equally so why did he need to check with you and why did he let you have the casting vote? If the guy had already said he'd give you a new one and you said "no let's take it" it was still open to him to say "no, I'm not accepting it." He can't essentially say it's your decision then complain about what your decision us.

RosesAndHellebores · 14/07/2025 00:47

Not the point of the thread but what sort of bed do you get for £120?

I'd have negotiated £20 off but wouldn't have made a song and dance over it.

A perfectly adequate one.

Blarn · 14/07/2025 11:30

Was it already really discounted, just not made clear why? £120 seems cheap for what I assume is a double or larger, bedframe.

TheodoraCrumpet · 14/07/2025 11:36

I'd have let my DH do the talking if the marks bothered him. They wouldn't bother me, hidden underneath the mattress. Did you need a new bed base urgently?
