To ask if you can die of a missed period (hear me out)

Period now three weeks late (definitely not pregnant I've done all the tests). But uterus is feeling swollen and spasming and awful and it feels like something is trying to get out but can't. Is it possible there's some blockage and I'm going to rupture and die?

(I know that a missed period is a thing people have now and then I've just never had it myself)

i had an ectopic pregnancy a few years ago. It was over 2 weeks after I’d missed my period before I got a very faint positive test.
a family member of mine didn’t test positive with a healthy pregnancy until around 16 weeks!
I’d definitely speak to the GP just to rule things out.

Fragmentedbrain · 12/07/2025 23:28

I am old enough for it to be perimenopause (although of an age where a GP would disingenuously insist I'm too young) but it has come out of nowhere and it's really uncomfortable.

I find the whole speak to a GP thing a bit stressful because I know I won't actually get to for weeks more and even then only by phone. Imagine being able to just see someone within a reasonable time :(

NightPuffins · 12/07/2025 23:35

Perimenopause came to me in my late 30s.
There were some months where I would get all of the usual premenstrual symptoms, be really bloated and generally uncomfortable, but then not bleed. Then I would feel uncomfortable until a month later.
It was fluctuating hormones. HRT has helped me balance this.

Definitely worth getting a GP to check out all possible reasons though.

SilverHammer · 12/07/2025 23:56

I wouldn’t rush to see a GP. I’m not sure it would be considered a red flag at this stage. I would wait a week or so and see what happens.

Thanks, I agree (double agree with my practice). Going to see if some milk thistle supplement helps wash things through.

Sounds like when I was in peri.

I'll feel pretty lucky if that's it tbh. No other symptoms at all just this weird blocked sensation (blaming inositol supplements - never touching that again).

I’m in peri and my last period was after a 6 month gap. I definitely did not die, but interestingly I pretty much lost half a kilo once it was over, so god only knows what was building up in there!

Flip!!! Was it noticeably heavy?

You'd be extremely lucky if that was it. Peri drags on for years stopping and starting. Keep an eye on yourself and monitor what happens.

Most folk I know don't think it's a big deal. I shall see what comes down the road.

No. Think of it like this. Your womb lining is already there. You're just shedding it during your period. There is no more in there than there ever was so how could you rupture? Plus, it can expand to fit a baby, how is 2 tbs of blood going to rupture anything?

However, if it feels weird, get checked out. Nothing is going to rupture from missing a period, I used to only have one every 3 months but we don't generally have a conscious awareness of our own innards. For the same reason we don't see our own eyelashes. We learn to ignore that sense. If you are aware of it, something is drawing your attention to it and you should investigate what and why.

Cintha · 13/07/2025 05:16

You should get it checked out. You can phone surgery early morning and request an urgent appointment for the same day. If you are experiencing pain, a possible ectopic pregnancy needs checking out ASAP. You should see GP anyway, to put your mind at rest

YorkshireDays · 13/07/2025 06:59

Could it be an ovarian cyst? They are painful and can also disrupt your periods. They are also quite common. And usually harmless! They often resolve themselves, but not always, and of course, it could be something else, so worth having checked out.

2tbs of blood? That would have been awesome. I used a moon cup. The old ‘it isn’t as much as it looks’ argument doesn’t hold.

I don’t disagree with the rest of your post, but please don’t assume the volume of blood loss other women experience.

A missed period isn’t a “missed period” as such. If you’re not pregnant, it just means either you’ve not ovulated that cycle or you’ve ovulated late. There won’t be a whole lot of matter trying to escape! What cycle day are you on? Your body will occasionally send you curveballs like this. I usually ovulate around CD15-16ish, but over the past 3 years I’ve had odd cycles where I’ve ovulated anything from CD8(!!) to CD20. That said, if you’re in a lot of pain, worth booking a GP appointment.

Footle · 13/07/2025 07:16

I had an ovarian cyst that presented like this, a very long time ago. It ruptured. It was an emergency then and it still would be now. I’d ask for an urgent appointment.

Muffinmam · 13/07/2025 07:46

I have this sort of pain regularly. My periods are often late or completely missed. I’ve had so many ultrasounds and there’s nothing wrong with my uterus.

One time I felt “weird” and bloated up suddenly. I went to the hospital and I had kidney stones, one of which was completely blocking my ureters. I needed emergency surgery. The first surgery failed, the second surgery was a success. The surgeon operated on my kidney.

Turns out I had renal colic. I don’t even remember being in pain (apparently it’s meant to be painful). But I do recall for four days I was hardly awake because the doctors had me on morphine.

What I’m trying to say is this might not even be your reproductive system. You need an ultrasound. Don’t let your GP fob you off.

Cheesetoastiees · 13/07/2025 08:14

Just go to the GP, unlikely to be anything sinister. I had two missed periods, followed by a dodgey period (shorter). GP said it could’ve been any number of things a virus, change in diet or potentially chemical pregnancy (I was trying at the time).

Then my period came back and all was was well. I wouldn’t drive yourself mad by sitting around thinking things if you’re concerned.

!00% agree with this.
Make gp appointment asap as it may be a couple of weeks wait.
If the situation seems to resolve itself before the apt then you can cancel if you want to.
If it became worse and you could go to hospital urgent treatment centre, they will sent you over to a&e if they thought it was needed.
Hope it resolves soon for you.

I completely agree.

You wouldn’t be bunged up with period blood because you wouldn’t have ovulated.

If you are in pain, then I would definitely book a gp appointment.

Is there any way you could have a tampon stick up there?
I assume you’d still leak blood so it’s unlikely but it’s worth ruling around.

I assume you’ve have sex in the past 3 weeks and this usually brings my period on.

I have missed periods over the years and it’s usually when I’m on a strict diet or stressed or when I had depression.

Yes it was, the heaviest one I've ever had. At one point I was wearing a moon cup, a night time pad and period pants and it was only just contained!!

Arggg I had hoped the answer would be don't worry this is something that just happens sometimes.

Thanks everyone at least won't feel like making a fuss when phone the GP. Sort of feels like I could do with a syringe to get everything cleared iyswim.

(Certain not pregnant although would be lying if the possibility of a test defying pregnancy isn't throwing me into additionao panic)

I had this and went to the GP and she said there wasn’t really anything she could do unless it happened repeatedly!
