To ask which roles you think no-one else could play

Some actors or actresses embody a role so completely, it’s inconceivable anyone else could ever play the same part. They could never be satisfactorily re-cast.

The first one that jumps into my mind is Peter Falk as Columbo. It’s hard to imagine anyone else in that role - he was and always will be Columbo.

Can anyone think of any others?

Robert Englund is the one, and only Freddy.

Smokesandeats · 12/07/2025 21:19

Isn’t Columbo one of many examples of that flawed and grubby but still a genius detective trope. Like Gary Oldman in Slow Horses. Pretty interchangeable perhaps.

I’d be like to see a reboot, but have it be Columbo’s nephew. (His brother’s child so still called Columbo!). Same MO, in that we see the crime. I’d like to see Owen Wilson do it.

Ruth Wilson as Jane Eyre - no! Absolutely nothing like how she is presented in the novel. I far prefer Mia Wasikowska.

I think Jack Nicolson in The Shining (and probably most other films he has done!).

You are both wrong! 🙃 Charlotte Gainsbourg is THE Jane Eyre.

Matthew Rhys! He’d be perfect. And I like the nephew idea.

scorpiogirly · 12/07/2025 21:43

Not a great actor but Arnie in Terminator

Also, Jeremy Irons will always be Charles Ryder and Anthony Andrews will always be Sebastian Flyte in Brideshead Revisited.

Agree. A more up to date one is the young actress who plays Darrell in Malory Towers. It's more than 50 years since I first read the books and she is exactly as I imagined her.

popcornpower2025 · 12/07/2025 21:48

James gandolfini (sp?) as Tony soprano

YourChirpyFatball · 12/07/2025 21:48

I used to swoon over Anthony Andrews. Absolutely gorgeous 😍

ButryMashPot · 12/07/2025 21:50

Literally every cast member in the LOTR films, perfect casting

ZiggyZowie · 12/07/2025 21:51

AnneLovesGilbert · 12/07/2025 20:24

Yes.

Ruth Wilson is Jane Eyre.

Yes and Toby Stephens was an excellent Mr Rochester , ( a touch of wolverine in there)

KPPlumbing · 12/07/2025 21:56

James Gandolfini as Tony Soprano

BebbanburgIsMine · 12/07/2025 21:58

David Dawson as King Alfred in The Last Kingdom

Faye Marsay IS Anne Neville in The White Queen, she’s exactly how I’ve always pictured Anne.

Tennistote · 12/07/2025 21:59

Alan Rickman as Professor Snape

FoFanta · 12/07/2025 21:59

Ewan McGregor as Mark Renton in Trainspotting - another movie that was perfectly cast.

HonoriaBulstrode · 12/07/2025 22:00

Oh Bette Davis in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane!

Bette Davis in anything.

Humphrey Bogart as Richard Blaine.

Agree about Joan Hickson. Others may play Miss Marple, she was Miss Marple.

I don't know what's going on with the Bergerac reboot, but there can be only one Charlie Hungerford.

And one Terry and Arfur.

rumblegrumble · 12/07/2025 22:09

Every character in LOTR other than Boromir and Faramir, I thought they were too old (aw, Faramir sets off spell check, Boromir doesn't!)

Every original character in Red Dwarf.

Rowan Atkinson and Miranda Richardson in Blackadder.

Every character in Father Ted, full stop. And IT Crowd.

And I absolutely adore the Wilson / Stephens Jane Eyre, maybe even more than the book... I think that's my absolute favourite period drama, though I think there are many other possible interpretations of both roles and can see why other people would prefer an adaptation that stayed closer to the text.

Grapewrath · 12/07/2025 22:12
