To ask you to identify this little lump?

I have had this little lump on my finger for well over a year.
It's always been a little bit tender.
About 6 months ago I decided to try to get rid of it with wart remover. It doesn't look rough like a wart though, it's smooth. The top layer of skin came off, it looked slightly smaller but now it's back to where it was.
Last night I experienced stabbing pains in it, it was really quite painful. It's now back to just being tender to the touch.
It looks like a blister but I don't think it's liquid. The skin on the finger moves quite freely.
It's really quite small so I don't feel like going to the doc but any ideas what it is, please?

Please just go to the doctor's

I had a very similar lump on my little finger, near my nail for about a year. Sometimes would hurt but not generally painful. A few months ago after a bath, I was messing with it and a small shard of glass came out of it. It disappeared straight after that. You may just have a foreign body in it, a tiny thorn perhaps?

Is it near a joint? Could be a ganglion cyst type thing. I have one near my toenail that I sometimes burst and a gel like substance comes out

Its1971Again · 12/07/2025 20:16

Hmm. I think it could be a basal cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer.
Don't panic, they're quite common, usually very slow growing and are easily treated - but you need to get yourself to a doctor to have it looked at.

If you want to fast track it, refer yourself to a private dermatologist to get an expert opinion (it will cost £175-£300 for the consultation, but you'll get the appointment in just a week or two).

@dementedpixie - you can have surgery to stop that happening. The sticky liquid is tendon fluid and if you get an infection it will be difficult to clear. I've had surgery to cure one on my finger - the overgrown bone which caused the cyst has been trimmed away, the whole area cleaned out and then stitched up. I have a very neat scar, no recurrence of the cyst and no pain. I'm glad I had it done. The most common cause is arthritis in the joint which starts in the early 30s so not 'an old person' thing according to the consultant who did my surgery (NHS).

How on earth can you say that based on the photos shown? You don’t say if you’re qualified to give that opinion, but even if you are, you aren’t looking at the area with a dermatoscope either, so really shouldn’t be commenting.

Oh, ok sorry. Perhaps your right and I shouldn't have commented. I was just offering it up as a possibility. It looks very similar to mine is all. I didn't claim to be making a diagnosis! I thought I'd made it clear that the OP should go to see a doctor or specialist.

Florence4170 · 12/07/2025 22:41

Thanks all I don't really think it's a cancer but it was a bit daft to post a photo and expect anyone to diagnose it! I just thought someone might have had something similar. I think I might make an appt, see what they say.

I would second ganglion cyst. I believe you are supposed to bash it with the family Bible to get rid of it.

But as others have said, pop to the docs and get it looked at. Better to be safe than sorry the doctor will agree.

TaborlinTheGreat · 12/07/2025 22:46

It looks like a ganglion cyst to me. I get them on my wrist sometimes when I've been doing a repetitive movement a lot (craft related!). They go away after a while.

Offleyhoo · 12/07/2025 22:48

I don't think anything alarming either BUT definitely go to GP to put mind at rest and hopefully get it gone.

I have something quite similar appearing on my finger like a month ago and still there. Waiting for an appointment with a dermatologist.
Hopefully nothing serious!!
