Racism against south Asians in the UK

ArtfulKoala · 12/07/2025 13:01

This is a very hard thread for me to begin. I’ve been intending to do it for months but felt unable to do so. I was born in the UK but I am of south Asian origin. My parents and grandparents emigrated here. We are five generations British and counting.

I feel that racism and racial suspicion towards brown skinned people has absolutely gone off the scale since Reform gained a foothold in mainstream politics.

At first it was the little things - being subjected to an extended bag check when entering a museum when white visitors walked straight in or were casually asked to just open the large section which wasn’t really checked. This is especially the case at places like Kensington Palace and the Imperial War Museum. For reference, I am talking about a small handbag 15cm by 25cm probably smaller than their own guidelines state. At Kensington Palace, it actually got to the ridiculous stage where the checker was asking me to open more and more zipped sections down to a 5cm one until there was literally nothing left to open and she was effectively asking me to open non existent ones!
There is an incident every time we are out ( me and my teenagers). People loudly talking about us standing right next to us talking about how we are entitled just because we have been directed to the front of the queue by staff as one of us is disabled.
Yesterday, we got on a damned train with cold, vegan salads from m&s and it started immediately. A white couple complaining loudly about “the smell” when there was none because they judged us by how we look and decided our food was smelly upon that basis. Then, when the ticket inspector came round and we showed the disabled railcard, a running commentary on how we must have gamed the system to obtain that.
It is really wearing. I don’t feel like we can belong here anymore despite being educated and fully integrated here. I fully pay for private housing, healthcare and education and yet I may as well have just stepped off a small boat yesterday as far as they are concerned. I cannot fight random bigots daily when we are just trying to live our lives having low key, relaxing private family time.
It is simply fogging to get worse isn’t it? I honestly believe that Farage will be the next PM ( I am politically literate enough to gauge this for myself rather than buying into tabloid scaremongering. Zayn Malik referred to similar experiences in the song he released last week. We have similar colourings to him and never experienced racism ever before this. Perhaps they think we are Middle Eastern and are directing a particular type of hatred towards us. Perhaps it is a new racism because there were not many Middle Eastern people in the UK until recently.

I know that it is not everyone everywhere but it is now frequent enough for us to come to expect it every time we leave the house. Is this the equivalent of the Weimar Republic for the UK? Since there is no such thing as “stopping the boats” then the headlines will continue and the hatred towards brown-skinned fully fledged Brits too.

If I don’t come back to this thread immediately, it is because it is a massive thing for me to write this down and I will be reading and considering the responses.

Very sorry that you are experiencing this.

If the ticket collector actually said that you must have gamed the system, that’s outrageous and you need to put in a written complaint.

Nametobechanged · 12/07/2025 13:07

Unfortunately a significant minority of people are racist (and also ableist). I’m sorry, sometimes it feels like it’s a view which is becoming more and more accepted in the UK.

Fffavvavaa · 12/07/2025 13:09

We are south Asian. We live in a South Asian community in the UK.

We've never felt held back due to our heritage. DH has a nice well paying job and is high up in his company.

All my DC have done well at school, went to grammar schools and went to prestigious unis

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 12/07/2025 13:11

If it’s true, it’s disgusting.

Eh? OP didn'f say that she is not any of those. People in prestigious unis with good jobs also experience racism.

hellohellohellohiya · 12/07/2025 13:15

I’m sorry you experience this.
I am white and live in a very culturally diverse area. I have never had my bag searched properly. Only ever a quick glance.
I have witnessed people speaking in a way that I consider quite ignorant and racist, particularly when I have been in less diverse areas.
You are not being unreasonable to be upset by this.

hattie43 · 12/07/2025 13:16

I think the rise of Reform has emboldened people to say what they really think . It’s shocking but the rise and rise of unwanted boat people has had an effect on all settled people of colour .

Ukholidaysaregreat · 12/07/2025 13:17

I am sorry. How awful. I hope the country can change from this right wing trajectory.

Simonjt · 12/07/2025 13:19

This is one of the (many) reasons we left the UK, the racism was really ramping it. Oddly enough we had similar recently at the imperial war museum, they thoroughly searched my bag, our sons and a our three year olds, they didn’t look inside the biggest rucksack, the one being carried by my white husband.

Jacobs4 · 12/07/2025 13:20

It’s true that Farage being so popular has given people with such feelings a space in which to feel valid. It’s happening across Europe as a whole though, and I don’t think that can be due to Reform. Of course USA is currently leading the way in validating such stances.

ilovesooty · 12/07/2025 13:21

I agree with you. My MP is British born south Asian and the racist abuse on his Facebook page is off the scale since the rise of Reform. His speech condemning the disability cuts resulted in comments like "of course you're against them. Your lot all marry their cousins and breed disabled children like rabbits". It was disgusting.

DiscoBob · 12/07/2025 13:27

I'd say it's racism and ableism sadly.
I'm disgusted that people would openly say racist or ableist remarks about people within earshot. Though I know some people do think that way.

There's a slim chance the people mentioned the food smell because they could smell it and didn't like it. That can happen even with cold food.

But even then it's rude to say it. You just put up with it. It's not like you were eating fish and chips or a roast? British meals that stink to high heaven!

I'm so sorry this is happening to you. In my area nobody votes reform. Well, a very very small amount. So not everyone is like that. Those who are racists are lowlifes.

Lifestooshort71 · 12/07/2025 13:28

You describe sickening racism and I'm not going to comment on your experiences because I've no idea how distressing it must feel. I'll be interested to read your measured responses when you return as there seem to be a lot of racist threads on here atm which have been accused of being computer generated.

Swiftie1878 · 12/07/2025 13:29

So sorry this is happening to you. Can’t begin to imagine how much pressure you must feel just by leaving the house.
It sounds as though the museum etc are using racial profiling when deciding which bags to search etc. Should be the same for everyone.

Usernumber12356 · 12/07/2025 13:33

My good friend is Taiwanese (so I guess more east than south Asia?) and she was commenting just this week on how she feels she's getting more questions about her heritage than ever before.

She's been in the UK for 25 years and I feel like our local area has become more diverse over that time, but she's feeling she gets more hassle now than she ever has ever done.

I believe you op and I'm sorry.

what is a “South Asian community in the UK”?

PolyVagalNerve · 12/07/2025 13:38

Wow
that is awful

I think the racism is fuelled by
9/11 / ISIS / London Bombings
Lee Rigby’s killing
Rochdale grooming gangs
muslim women’s dress, (mis)interpreted ? As woman oppression
Asian lads dating white girls / women but marrying to race
the headlines about asylum seekers in hotels
the constant small boats
older asian - women mainly - who despite living in UK for many years and having children haven’t learnt the language and need the cost of interpreters to access services
the news about black lads / knife crime / drugs / gangs

humans have a natural xenophobia that requires education, and calling out, in all aspects of society

media capitalises on the xenophobia for headlines / click bait

they reinforce society’s biased views ..

I’m not sure what the way out of this is, very complex and we are all humans for better or worse

dizzydizzydizzy · 12/07/2025 13:40

Sounds awful OP. It makes me ashamed to be British.

I agree that the rise of Reform and Farage is making people think it OK to be openly racist.

That issue you had with the queue jumping sounds similar to something that happened to me when I had a broken leg. (I'm white) The staff at the place I was at let me go to the front due to the broken leg and that resulted in a large crowd of people yelling at me because they had got there first ...... well duhuuuhhh of course they were faster than me. Crowds of people can get very nasty.

I am so sorry that people are being treated like this. This type of sniping does seem to have increased since Brexit in my own experience.

@MrsSkylerWhite I think the OP was referring to the couple who were already bitching away rather than the ticket inspector.

Whitehorses67 · 12/07/2025 13:42

I’m really sorry.

I think that racists can be divided firstly into hardcore longterm racists who hate anyone who isn’t white and always have done. These people are unreceptive to reason and need controlling and of course punishment if they act on their horrid views.

Secondly there are the newer and I think far larger and group of people who have been rightly frightened by islamic terrorism, are suffering from the affects of austerity on public services and the cost of living crisis and are now mistakenly blaming all non white people for these awful things.

This group of people can be reasoned with but some politicians exploit and manipulate them for their own ends ie power.

I challenge people from the second group when I hear misinformation linking towards racist comments but I do it in a friendly conversational not confrontational way because I think just labelling them as racists and being angry or cutting them out leads nowhere but towards the further polarisation of society.

I also think that much like with gender ideology and climate change campaigning there has been an amount of over reach with anti racist activism.
This ultimately back fires.

I had hoped that our new government would lead us into a better place in all sorts of ways but so far that doesn’t seem to be very likely.

Like most people I worry where this will all end.

I wish you well OP and if I ever see or hear someone being treated badly as you have been I will do my best to speak in solidarity.

Perhaps I’m wrong but I still think at heart the majority of people have good in them and we can overcome the likes of farage, badenoch, trump etc and they will be an ugly but temporary blot on history.

Thispupsgottofly · 12/07/2025 13:44

I'm really sorry this is happening to you Op and it's surprising to me that it is happening in London which is so multi-cultural (not that I don't believe you).
It is depressing that Reform seems to be gaining popularity and I really hope you're wrong about Nigel Farage!
I have hope that younger generations are more open minded and anti-racist but maybe I'm being naive.

xsquared · 12/07/2025 13:46

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 12/07/2025 13:11

If it’s true, it’s disgusting.

What makes you think it's not?

I've lived in the UK for nearly 40 years and I still experience mild to overt racism to this day. I can well believe these happened to op.

I don't usually question the "random" bag checks, but I do say something if someone verbally abuses me because of my ethnicity.

seaelephant · 12/07/2025 13:47

My partner is south asian mixed and being with him has opened by eyes to how bad things are here. Stares, comments, outright abuse. He just shrugs it all off and says he's used to it but it makes me feel so sad for him and his family. It appears to be worse in big cities and areas of higher immigration, it's never happened in any small town or village we've visited

Azdcgbjml · 12/07/2025 13:48

I'm sorry. Farage, Boris et al have a lot to answer for. It is horrifying the way people are now comfortable with being openly racist.

Neetra30 · 12/07/2025 13:48

I am also from a south asian background, it's not the first time something like this has happened to me or my family but we get used to it
