Some UK companies are trialling surge pricing, which will make water more expensive in the summer.

Am I crazy or is this kind of sinister?

It’s an idea that hits at the level equivalent to 8 baths a day but I still don’t like it

That's terrifying. I wish people would just turn their fucking hosepipes off and be more mindful instead of going "I paid for it, no one can make me stop pouring water down the drain for jollies".
Or all the whatabout leaksssss that always gets trotted out.
At the end of the day something's got to give because we don't have enough water to support the population now (that keeps increasing because MPs are utterly feckless about immigration).
But no, Clive's hydrangeas are more important than us literally having enough water to drink in the near future.
It just reminds me of the bit near the end of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy where they were disagreeing over the napkins and the ship never launched.

Will they be reducing the unit price in winter and for people who generally use less?

Hmm, let's find out, shall we...

Same with gas and electric. Now you know why some people are against smart meters especially since it gives the companies the ability to "accidentally " cut you off in times of great need. The future is definitely not looking bright for the poorer section of society.

My Toddler isn’t going to take this well at all, we already have multiple battles a day about hose use

ShesTheAlbatross · 12/07/2025 14:57

When you’ve got people who say they’ll ignore things like hosepipe bans because “I pay for it”, they have to try to dissuade overuse of water somehow.

It should be a higher rate once you hit a certain amount, so if you’re using a normal amount of water it’s the normal cost, but if you’re using excessive water, it costs more. And in this plan that I’ll enact when I’m in charge of everything, I would account for things like disability where you may need to, for example, do more washing etc, so those households wouldn’t be affected.

English water companies, OP. Scotland’s water is publicly owned.

Thanks, Thatcher.

Yes. People in the U.K. take water too much for granted.
