This is it - climate change is really beginning to bite

We know the climate is changing and it is us. This particular heat wave feels like the next step up after a winter of devastating storms.

YABU - It's just too hot
YANBU - This is the taste of things to come.

The dinosaurs were impacted.

We are SO fucking self absorbed to think this is about us.

It's widely accepted a asteroid took out the dinosaurs, & caused catastrophic change across the globe

Get real. As if anyone can make a dent in any solution for climate change. The average joe doesn’t need to do a thing to be more “eco” it’s corporations, industries and billionaires that can make a dent in it. Go and have a drive through beef burger in an airconned car you’ll feel better!

No thanks. I will do my bit as far as I can. I don't need or want those.
I agree large corporations need to do more.

It's called summer

Exactly!

Sunaquarius · 11/07/2025 19:57

Yes climate changes is happening but I also just think it's a hot day to be honest.

This is up there with one of the dumbest takes I’ve read on here..

lifeonmars100 · 11/07/2025 19:58

Blackberries are fully ripe round where I live, I am sure that this used to happen In September, my montbresia has bloomed and is now starting to die and all the leaves are brown and dry. It used to flower late August to early September, the last bit of colour in my back yard. I was really startled to see it flowering in late June. The seasons are blurred and no longer distinct and it must be really messing with the breeding season for wildlife . Personally I hate this itense heat, makes me feel nauseous and brings on migraine. It must be hell for pregnant women, the very young, the very old and people with chronic health conditions.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 11/07/2025 17:05

It's called summer

And what happened to Winter? I’m in the South but even here we’d have frost on the grass for weeks in the Winter - all completely normal. Now, for the last few years, we’ve had very, very little. Last Winter we had one day of frost.

This isn’t normal Summer heat - and all our seasons are becoming mucked up. It’s frightening to see, as even when my youngest DC was a toddler we still had loads of frosty, icy days, but now we have none. No need for gloves or hats. Not one day in Winter. This affects the plants; the insects; and the viruses and bacteria. Nothing is killed off by a nice cold snap.

Frugalgal · 11/07/2025 20:00

I can't read this thread because I just know there will be countless morons saying 'its called summer'. The stupidity of this is beyond belief, we are experiencing record highs, increasing all the time.

It's not 'called summer' you blithering ignorant simpletons. It's called the UK turning into a hot country which we are totally unprepared for.

And down here in the north of New Zealand, middle of winter, I'm sitting here at 5.30 a.m. and it's 16 deg.c. Last week it was 20deg in the afternoon. There has been rain heavier than I've ever seen it, sweet potato crop rotting in the ground, citrus covered in mould. It's here alright, folks. I suppose the only good thing about it is that the next ice age had been delayed by a few thousand years. But that will come too.

Interestingly NZ came up as one of the safest countries to live in with regards to global warming/one of the least affected in the article I read.
Oh dear, there goes that theory then.

Weird weather episodes aside, I'm extremely glad to be living here. This will no doubt be the lifeboat of the world before too long. Envious eyes will be cast our way, and indeed, are now, as a place to survive the worst the climate can throw at humanity. At least we are not dependant upon the vagaries of the Gulf Stream - the apparently inevitable failure of Britain's heating system. We here in Northland are on a latitude comparable with Morocco. Southland has no Gulf Stream. and winds straight off Antarctica, but at least our climate has everything in between. Wheat, oats and barley all the way up to bananas, figs and grapes.

Edited

Unless you get that one in four chance megaquake over the next 50 years so violent that it rips the country in half, then you can keep it.

BeLilacWriter · 11/07/2025 20:02

Thing is, instead of hand wringing, blaming this that or the other and trying to stop the inevitable, we should be looking at ways to help us live and cope with these changes.
But, but , but! That doesn't make a sexy headline, give some little Swedish troll false fame or enable polluting countries and companies carte blanche to make everyone feel guilty.

Gbafa · 11/07/2025 20:03

TheSwarm · 11/07/2025 19:41

The basic science behind man-made climate change is breathtakingly simple and universally accepted by anyone with a sliver of creditability.

You can say you don't care but we know humans are causing the climate to change outside of natural cycles.

I agree. But the UK's emissions is negligible

The dinosaurs were quite literally impacted - by an asteroid. It wasn't climate change that did for them. Well, not caused by natural causes anyway.

It's amazing how many people just can't accept that climate change is happening faster than it has before. Heaven forbid that they stop driving an SUV or go ski-ing.

LastTrainsEast · 11/07/2025 20:10

I was this hot last year and many years before.

When you hear about floods take note of "worst for 30 years" or "worst for 50 years" which means it happened before.

Don't get me wrong. The planet has cycles and we might have to deal with changes, but the sky is not falling.

Remember humans manage in Alaska & Iceland, We live in Deserts and Jungles. Hurricanes sounds scary to us in the UK, but to many Americans and others too they are normal.

Wowwee1234 · 11/07/2025 20:10

anyzee · 11/07/2025 18:47

Realistically what is the point of worrying about it, as I don't know what else we can do individually.

If big governments around the world are merely paying lip service by lecturing us, and not doing much policy wise, I can't make myself worried about it. If you don't agree with me then tell me what I should do please. Join stop oil, demonstrate, start a petition, what?

In the meantime I'll enjoy the nice weather, just as I did for every heatwave I experienced often for weeks on end back in the 70s and forwards to today.

Loads we can do individually

  • demonstrate
  • write to MPs
  • manage our own lifestyles
  • educate others
  • educate ourselves
  • talk about it
  • avoid buying from abd visiting countries not doing enough (USA, India, Australia)

But let's be honest. Don't ignore this post. Challenge me. The only is only 1% if the world's total emissions. We have no impact whatsoever

1% of emissions produced in UK because we don't manufacture anything... what about all the emissions in China and rest of Asia to produce and ship everthing we use to UK?

Inyournewdress · 11/07/2025 20:10

HelpMeGetThrough · 11/07/2025 17:08

And it’s bloody lovely.

It’s not lovely. Where in the country are you? What health conditions do you have? What job do you do? Do you have a home, if so a flat or a house? A garden?

People are suffering and dying and even the biggest hot weather lovers I know are struggling.

dynamiccactus · 11/07/2025 20:10

Gbafa · 11/07/2025 20:03

I agree. But the UK's emissions is negligible

It's not just about climate change, though. It's about air pollution which causes many thousands of deaths a year

Please turn off your engines when you are stationary!

Imaybeoldbutstillrandy · 11/07/2025 20:11

Yup - too freaking hot - temp in my house is 30.9. that's with all advice to open windows early, shut them when temp outside more than inside, close curtains, have fan in main room.

However, come November we will be complaining about how cold it is & looking for tips on how to keep yourself warm.

Feeling lucky that our bedroom faces North so stays cool.

China does create a lot of emissions but it is also trying to mitigate them, for example by making electric cars rather than fossil fueled cars.

munchingmunch · 11/07/2025 20:12

When I was little in the 80s, it was hot every summer, all summer.

@MumWifeOther where did you live? The UK didn't have long hot summers throughout the 80s...

halfpennypocketwatch · 11/07/2025 20:12

TarquinsTurnips · 11/07/2025 17:54

It's not just about one hot summer. If you google it, you can find predictions of how much of UK coast will be under water due to rising sea levels. It is a lot. Enough to make you think would I want to live in a seaside town.

Unfortunately we catastrophically fucked it.

Scientists predictions aren't great.
