This is it - climate change is really beginning to bite

We know the climate is changing and it is us. This particular heat wave feels like the next step up after a winter of devastating storms.

YABU - It's just too hot
YANBU - This is the taste of things to come.

Thankfully all our world leaders are fighting determinedly to fix this problem.

Absolutely.

In fact their sense of urgency is so great, they insist on using private jets to get to all the COP events.

Icreatedausernameyippee · 11/07/2025 21:22

I remember an unbearable summer as a child where it got to 35-36. I haven't been a child for some years.
Yes, Global Warming is real but you're being quite dramatic about this heatwave.

And down here in the north of New Zealand, middle of winter, I'm sitting here at 5.30 a.m. and it's 16 deg.c. Last week it was 20deg in the afternoon. There has been rain heavier than I've ever seen it, sweet potato crop rotting in the ground, citrus covered in mould. It's here alright, folks. I suppose the only good thing about it is that the next ice age had been delayed by a few thousand years. But that will come too.

Interestingly NZ came up as one of the safest countries to live in with regards to global warming/one of the least affected in the article I read.
Oh dear, there goes that theory then.

Weird weather episodes aside, I'm extremely glad to be living here. This will no doubt be the lifeboat of the world before too long. Envious eyes will be cast our way, and indeed, are now, as a place to survive the worst the climate can throw at humanity. At least we are not dependant upon the vagaries of the Gulf Stream - the apparently inevitable failure of Britain's heating system. We here in Northland are on a latitude comparable with Morocco. Southland has no Gulf Stream. and winds straight off Antarctica, but at least our climate has everything in between. Wheat, oats and barley all the way up to bananas, figs and grapes.

Actually if the ice caps melt most of the south will be under water.

BeardofHagrid · 11/07/2025 21:23

I need to change my garden into an olive grove. Get rid of the soil, only sand will do from now on. My gas boiler will go in the bin, don’t need it any more. It’s scary but we will adapt. We will survive and thrive in our new desert-like climate.

It's possible for people to enjoy the weather today - and for the climate to still be changing!

Since other posters are suggesting it's just like 1976 - it does feel different to the kind of summers and winters I remember from childhood. The sun today felt really severe and cruel, not normal for England. Just as the relentless storm we were getting earlier this year felt tropical, too much rain too quickly, and the flash flooding is extremely dangerous. The 2021 flooding in Europe was devastating.

I met up with a friend last year who lives in Addis Ababa and she was despairing, in a really dark place, about what climate change is doing to Ethiopia and what will happen to climate refugees.

A cruel sun and relentless storms?? Clearly the North East has dodged some very dramatic weather.

Wackadaywideawake · 11/07/2025 21:26

The Earth will be absolutely fine… once humanity has finished itself off.

Lonelycrab · 11/07/2025 21:27

EveSix · 11/07/2025 21:13

Please do not seek to emulate the PP's outlook; hold on to your authentic and clear-sighted response of unease and worry.

The peddlars of "The planet will be fine, it doesn't matter if humanity is wiped out," angle are attempting a bit of rhetorical bypassing; it is a common rut into which can people drop when the dread of the reality of the unfolding crisis feels overwhelming. It entirely shrugs off the truth that any 'wiping out' will not be a swift and painless business as the phrase implies, but rather involve a century of displacement due to resource-based conflict (war, invasion and occupation), loss, disease, famine and starvation, social collapse, regression of human and employment rights, violence, fear and death. And not 'only' in remote communities and countries in the global South, but right here in the UK.

It’s not really rhetorical bypassing.

More a statement of fact.

Homo sapiens have only been around for a few tens of thousands of years. In that time, they have invented capitalism, money and therefore greed. They have got excellent at doing this over the last few thousand years, adding really good weapons into the mix too.

Orangutans or koalas or hummingbirds havent done that, they’ve evolved to adapt seamlessly even though they’ve been here far far longer. Greed is a unique trait to humans.

Of course it isn’t going to be painless, it will likely be utterly brutal, so buckle up MN if humans do wipe themselves out, but let’s face it, it’s a corner we’ve backed ourselves into due to too much intelligence, resources and greed..

But mostly not enough wisdom.

daisychain01 · 11/07/2025 21:27

Not wanting to minimise the current temps, but just to add some perspective, after Sunday, the temps are back to 23 - 25c for the coming 2 weeks (variable across the country, but trend is downwards) with some heavy rain due 20 - 23 July

Finteq · 11/07/2025 21:27

Inyournewdress · 11/07/2025 20:10

It’s not lovely. Where in the country are you? What health conditions do you have? What job do you do? Do you have a home, if so a flat or a house? A garden?

People are suffering and dying and even the biggest hot weather lovers I know are struggling.

It was 27c in the northwest today. And will be 28 tomorrow.

That is normal summer temps

Frugalgal · 11/07/2025 20:00

I can't read this thread because I just know there will be countless morons saying 'its called summer'. The stupidity of this is beyond belief, we are experiencing record highs, increasing all the time.

It's not 'called summer' you blithering ignorant simpletons. It's called the UK turning into a hot country which we are totally unprepared for.

Mail online is full of comments along these lines, but some are managing to blame immigration which is quite a mental leap. Apparently too many brown people are causing the country to overheat!

I dunno, last summer was absolutely shite. It was cold and we had one week of decent weather.

We only has one week of warm weather the whole of last year as well.

NecklessMumster · 11/07/2025 16:39

OldLondonDad · 11/07/2025 20:56

It really is hot this year isn’t it. I saw the other day it’s almost as bad as the summer of ‘76…

The reason that the summer of 76 lives in legend and memory is because it was highly unusual.

BetterWithPockets · 11/07/2025 21:34

Agree — but equally last summer was AWFUL. (I’m in the UK.) While I’m sure we’re experiencing new weather patterns as a result of global warming, I’m not 100% sure what that will look like going forward…

pollyglot · 11/07/2025 21:34

Actually if the ice caps melt most of the south will be under water.

Actually, so will most of Britain. I'll be fine, sitting in my holiday home in the world's most active volcanic zone, a couple of thousand feet above sea level.

MugPlate · 11/07/2025 21:37

It will steadily get hotter and more unpredictable for the rest of our (and our children's) lives.

The heat we're having now was created by emissions released in the 70s.

It may be a statement of fact -it's true, the planet will be fine. But what I'm getting at is the mechanism by which otherwise reasonable, compassionate people seem to shrug and trot out this line, shamelessly ignoring the suffering of billions in the process of aforementioned wiping out, both human and animal life, on land and in our oceans.
It may be factual but it shies away from the reality of our human condition and our very real loves, attachments, friendships, needs and comforts.

"In late June 2024, the United Kingdom was affected by a heatwave, with most of the country seeing temperatures reaching 26 °C (79 °F). In mid-July and late-July 2024, heatwaves affected the United Kingdom, and again in August"

OneEagerOchrePanda · 11/07/2025 21:43

I hate threads like this. I absolutely believe climate change is real and im terrified of it. Reading about it spikes my anxiety hugely for my children’s futures and makes me feel sick. But what I hate is the comments that “we all deserve it, we brought it on ourselves”. Yes a lot of it will sadly be due to human behaviours, but generally most ordinary humans are good people just living a normal day to day life. Do we, and especially the innocent children, really “deserve” to suffer :(

👏👏👏👏👏
I’m old ( 79) so I won’t see the awful devastation that’s coming for all you young people here.
I know that I’ve done my best to alleviate this avoidable tragedy.
I have no sympathy for the deniers but the sorrow is: you all have to suffer because of their attitude.

LemonLass · 11/07/2025 21:43

It's not reached late 30s, early 40s? It's summer at last, been waiting for this for 30 years when I was a kid and we had hot summers

You have been waiting 30 years for this @Shellyash ? Where is the laugh emojii when you need it?

Hush please, poster who is "me me me" and doesnt care for older people, kids/babies/wildlife/enviroment.

Maybe just think your thoughts in your vacuous head?

Don’t disagree with any of that.

But I do wish the “oh it’s just summer” people could grasp the idea.

Like I’ve said before, a large part of it is down to selfishness, and greed, essentially- I don’t care.

Mostly lack of wisdom though.

TheBuffetInspector · 11/07/2025 16:39

This planet has had many cycles of temperature.

CFCs banned in the 90s. The Ozone layer being the big issue.

We can't go back.

We'll never make it right.

It's irreversible now. The planet wants, what the planet wants.

I don't think the planet 'wants' climate change.

HelpMeGetThrough · 11/07/2025 17:08

And it’s bloody lovely.

I hope you like tarantulas as well then! We've already had waves of daddy long legs spiders (yes it is a type of spider) and false widow spiders across my part of the UK in the last 15 years due to climate change. There are tarantulas in Spain, Italy and Cyprus!

I really do appreciate the UK's lack of deadly snakes and spiders.
