To move or not to move

Hello,
asking on here for some opinions.
my son is coming to the end of year 8 and has had a rocky time.
His grades have been very low - although has showed some improvement this term, he is still well below where he should be. This is due to the impact of Covid, disruption in his first year of secondary and having undiagnosed ADHD ( this has now been diagnosed but only very recently)
I have been offered a place for him in a very good but academic local school from September which would mean big changes.
His current school is under special measures, however has been showing improvement and he is slowly improving now he is getting support for his ADHD. It is also walking distance and he does have some friends( although they are not long friendships - they have been formed this year)
The new school has an excellent reputation but it further away and obviously will be disruptive to move him. What would other do in this situation?
my husband this we should leave the decision up to him, however I feel it needs to come from us as he won’t see the long term benefits only the short term disruption.
so my AIBU is
YABU - don’t move him - he’s showing improvement and it’s local and he has made some friendships.
YANBU - move him to the better school and get the best opportunity.

I’d move him before GCSEs (which my son begins in yr9) when it is hard to then move. You gave this school a good shot

What is the SEN department and provision like at the other school? Have you been clear with the SENCO about your son’s needs?
He might find it difficult to make friends in Y9 and does the distance mean he’d be on school buses? This can be problematic.
Only you can decide but it’s late in the term no chance for transition etc.
