Just something I can’t get out my head recently

Let me preface this by saying it’s really reductive and over-simplified and a bit daft. I get that. And also I have lots of men who I cherish in my life -
dad, bro, husband, friends, etc etc. But I just can’t stop thinking about it as a concept, so hear me out…

AIBU to suggest/ partially believe that society, as a whole, would function better in the absence of men? Say that we found a way to artificially create sperm, or just fertilise eggs….would people still go for the organic stuff and roll the dice on the person that comes along with it? And, if not, and if the option to select gender presumably came along with the artificial sperm revelation…why would anyone choose to have a male child, and risk never having grandkids? And therefore…would an all-female society emerge? If so, would it be better? I say yes.

Before anyone says we have that option right now in the form of sperm donors/ one-night-stands etc, it’s not quite the same. It’s never totally string-free, and society is woefully lacking when it comes to being a single parent. Sex selection also requires IVF, and it’s not exactly reliable. Im talking about a world where you can buy artificial…semen, DNA, whatever, and apply it like a medication. Boom, pregnant.

As for the emergent utopia, I feel like a world where a far greater proportion had the theoretical opportunity to grow a child would soon begin to look after their interests in terms of career and income protection, mental health, general gynaecological and obstetric healthcare. We might see more of the fabled “Village” form to support parents and, therefore, children. Children therefore may be more well-adjusted with better early years care….less neglect/ deprivation/ childhood trauma….less crime?! Social services/ prisons/ policing costs come down, get reinvested into….healthcare? A free holiday for everyone every year?! Who knows.

Going by the stats, and assuming the absence of men doesn’t increase/ decrease women’s likelihood of committing certain crimes, we could expect astonishing reductions in sexual and domestic violence, murder, drug dealing, people trafficking, drug addiction…the list goes on. And, I reckon, you could argue that even if there was an uptick in female offending, it still wouldn’t be enough to fill the void left by male offenders.

I don’t know. This isn’t a call-to-arms, not making a case for it, I don’t hate men. The idea came to me and I haven’t been able to get it out my head as a concept. Reached a point where I’m just really interested to know what others think 🤣 by all means, point out everything I’ve missed/ am
completely wrong about.

Well, some women don’t fancy men, or only men. If this is a surprise this may not be the discussion for you… 😋

If that's what you think heteronormative means, it's definitely not a word for you...

vintagedog · 11/07/2025 13:56

RightOrAMeringue · 11/07/2025 13:53

Aaaah yeah maybe the wrong term to use. Wasn’t for a second suggesting heterosexuality was the norm, more just being self-deprecating for being so boring. I’ve edited that though, sort of harms the whole debate. Thanks!

Well it’s because you’ve used chat got to write your post.

Yet another one. Boring as hell now.

celandiney · 11/07/2025 13:57

And as for "who would choose to have a male child"
My son is one of the joys of my life. My daughter as well,I would never choose one sex over the other.

Most decent parents wouldn't.

Whatnowtrev · 11/07/2025 13:59

Hm na I like men more. They did a fine job of building the land and Infrastructures. Shame we can't find a way to impregnate men and do away with women imo

NuffSaidSam · 11/07/2025 14:00

I think it's worth a try.

I don't think it would be any worse and potentially a lot better.

It'd be very interesting.

It's probably unethical to completely wipe out all men, but we could completely segregate and men have half the world and women the other half and see what that's like.

Titasaducksarse · 11/07/2025 14:00

I don't know. I feel there will always be someone vying for power.

Ah look, suddenly you can’t spell like in all your other posts on this thread. Funny that.

Dweetfidilove · 11/07/2025 14:06

Nah. I don't want a world without men.
Remove the bad ones, then leave the rest alone.

Heretobenosy · 11/07/2025 14:08

I’m married to a woman (same sex relationship) so easy for me to get on board with this lol.

We were watching Law and Order SVU last night and there was a coma rape and we ended up talking about how it’s happened too often where someone in a coma turns out to be pregnant and how many people could be getting away with it if they use condoms. My wife suggested that maybe all women should be on birth control if they are in a coma due to how unfair it is that they then have to carry a child without ever knowing. Then we both agreed actually maybe no men should just not be allowed to work with people in comas.

Which led us to talking about David Fuller (monster in the morgue) and we both just came to conclusion that men should just be excluded from society. ‘Not all men’ but too many men are just evil and depraved and I do think we would have a better society if we were in a matriarchal society

Edited it but left it in.

So you're doubling down on it?

ChristmaslightsuptilJanuary · 11/07/2025 14:09

Yes, my (old, wild swimming, outdoorsy etc) female friend group talk about this all the time. Men as a species suck.

Mrsbloggz · 11/07/2025 14:12

PizzaPunk · 11/07/2025 13:11

I'm guessing you've never met anyone who works in a women's prison?

Cleanse the male 'top dogs' and female top dogs will just take their place.

No-one will be any safer.

Edited

I agree with this.
Humans are strongly predisposed towards the creation of dominance hierarchies.

Can’t edit it…maybe because it was already edited?. Told you my mumsnetting skills were crap 🙁 if anyone’s concerned about me being a bigot though, they can ask and I’ll reassure it’s not the case. I feel like you might just be deflecting from the actual (albeit insane) discussion though…. 😋

The impregnated men would then be the new women- to be treated as domestic appliances by the non-impregnatable men.

Titasaducksarse · 11/07/2025 14:15

I've met too many women whose behaviour is just awful toward other women. These aren't the abusive criminal ones, just ordinary women but whose actions towards other women are spiteful, jealous, hateful, back stabbing and also have been party to intense unfairness etc. Maybe without men they'd not be like this.

TotHappy · 11/07/2025 14:16

There's a book about this - Herland it's called. I didn't manage to finish it because the style was a bit draggy for me, and it's very old now (written in early 20th century I think?) But explores exactly what you're talking about OP, so you might want to get it!

Ahh ok, so anyone who finds an insulting and bigoted term insulting and bigoted, is just deflecting?

Got it.

OxfordInkling · 11/07/2025 14:23

I have no desire to be a miner, deep sea welder, front line soldier, installer of electrical pylons, dustbin man, road sign painter, railway engineer, toil on a road crew…

I also know that although women are, on average, less violent - that doesn’t mean they are not violent. And their usual methods of attack socially can be worse and more damaging that a straight up fight.

I like men. I appreciate what they bring to society. And they bring a hell of a lot.

Ilovemyshed · 11/07/2025 14:25

WholesaleNoodleBuyer · 11/07/2025 13:19

I’ve met someone who does.
The circumstances that lead to women being in prison and behaving poorly usually involve abuse and coercion from men. Without men much of this behaviour wouldn’t happen.

As I’m sure you can tell I’m a big fan of men. 😎

What utter rubbish.
