WIBU to sabotage the blazer?

DC had a 'nearly new' blazer when starting their secondary school. They've worn it a lot, and when I say 'worn' I mean worn the fabric - it's thin, it's shiny in places, it's snagged, it has torn lining and ink stains on the inside of the pockets.
However - DC has sensory issues. The blazer is comfortable and is the right size.

I have bought a new one one - it isn't shiny or snagged or thin. It is the next size up and although slightly large, will fit perfectly next term when they're back and wearing jumpers.

WIBU to sabotage the old one when I wash it over the summer? I thought perhaps one of the sleeves might develop a rip (there are enough pulled threads).
I want rid of it. It's horrible. I can't redonate it as it's too tatty.

As the parent of an ND child with sensory issues, yes you would be unreasonable.

Surely you know how hard sensory issues are on a child and your child’s comfort is more important than how the blazer looks or your opinion on it?

Yeah i disagree with this, even though I understand your thinking x

TheNightingalesStarling · 11/07/2025 12:34

They can get oddly attached to blazers, even without sensory issues. I doubt he's the only one with a tatty one

DongDingBell · 11/07/2025 12:39

I'd put the new one through the wash a couple of times to soften it up.

HelloGreen · 11/07/2025 12:41

Mid year I’d say don’t do it but over the summer will be a long break of not wearing it so come September when it gets put back on it will probably feel a bit odd anyway. So I’d lean towards doing it.

IzzyHandsIsMySpiritAnimal · 11/07/2025 14:17

The problem is this one won't fit by next term.
I can definitely wash it to soften it up.
What I don't want is DC going to school in an ill-fitting blazer. Nor do I want them being sent home because bits are dropping off it.

Can you get DC to wear it a bit over the summer now and then at home so they're used to it?

I think I may have to.
It's too late to return it to the supplier and no point selling on as they'll still need a new one next term (which won't be any different).
It sits differently depending if worn with or without a jumper.

Will they really grow that much by next term?

What I don't want is DC going to school in an ill-fitting blazer You're making this all about you.

What is the issue with something being 'ill-fitting'?

Ill fitting as in tto small and tight - the sleeves are already a bit short.
DC hates tight clothes and sleeves that sit above the wrist

It's not about me, it's about their comfort ultimately.

I wouldn't send them in wearing tatty worn shirts or shoes for the same reason- if they fell apart when wearing (as has happened with shoes in the past) that would be a worse discomfort, and DC would feel hugely embarrassed by it.

If they have diagnosed sensory issues, I wouldn't. It's not about the blazer, it's about trust. If they refuse to wear the new one they won't refuse less because the old one is missing, in any case, if the issue truly is sensory.

As pp suggested I would wash it a few times (in fact I'd have looked for a second hand one in the first place), and get your dc to wear it over summer. Point out the sleeve issue, that may help convince them.

IzzyHandsIsMySpiritAnimal · 11/07/2025 21:11

@Maxorias - undiagnosed - we're in the queue for assessment for various things.

I did mention it today and DC is fully aware that the old blazer is getting uncomfortable. I wasn't able to find a second hand one in the chest size we needed unfortunately otherwise I'd have opted for that.

As you say, I think trust is an element. We'll have to work on that.
