Was I unprofessional?

A couple of weeks ago, I cried at work and have felt embarrassed and down about it since. I was under a lot of pressure and doing long hours. My boss has since taken some of the pressures off, which is good, but I can't help feeling silly and ashamed of myself. I've never done it before and I've done very well in this job

AIBU to have cried?

You are only human! Give yourself a break and move on from this.

Assuming it was in an office type job, and a one off - then no.

If it’s a client or patient facing role and you cried during an interaction with them, then maybe.

Is this about Rachel Reeves?

ChewyMints · 11/07/2025 08:51

Yo, that you Rachel?

Pinty · 11/07/2025 08:52

You are a human being, you are showing you are a human being. There is nothing wrong with crying.

It all depends on the context, I think. Was it in the middle of an open plan office or was it in private with your boss?

I lead a big team and there’s been several occasions where people (both male and female) have cried in my office. It doesn’t bother me at all and usually means I can get them help/support faster. I work for a very supportive company who understands the importance of good physical and mental health - not every company is like that though.

Are you RR?

noctilucentcloud · 11/07/2025 09:02

No you weren't unprofessional. You crying was just your stress coming out. Other people may get grumpy or snappy. I personally think crying has less of an effect on other people.

I’ve cried in work in different jobs, usually when I’m pushed to the absolute limit and been working long hours and not paid for them! Crying is just an emotion, you laugh in work so why shouldn’t you cry. Sometimes it me what is needed for managers to see how people are feeling and being treated. Sending hugs though as it’s horrible feeling but it’s done now don’t overthink it.

Thanks... that makes a lot of sense
