Just curious.

My Dc primary school have announced that they’ll be changing the school uniform from September. From white polos to royal blue. With leggings, shorts, or black leggings. With plain black trainers.and their usual school jumper / Cardigan which is also royal blue . It’s for everyday of the week.. it’s to fit in with their out door play etc. lots of parents annoyed as they’ve already bought new school uniform ahead of time before it was announced.

Honestly? Sounds chavvy.

Leggings?!!

Leggings on small children are comfortable and pratical but by all means let’s stick little children in crap looking school skirts and trousers because JustSawJohnny thinks that 6 year olds in leggings look ‘chavvy’ 🙄

Dd loves wearing a skirt, she finds leggings too close.

@HappyDaze1997 it sounds like parents should (very quickly as it's practically the end of term) contact the head and give their thoughts.
The most obvious to me should be that the bottom half of the uniform should be one colour (black?) and the children can choose between formal school trousers, formal school shorts, formal skirts, formal pinafore, formal culottes.
OR
leggings, pe shorts, trackies.
If it's black....then let them choose whatever style they are most comfortable with.

(Shoes should be suitable for outside play so trainers best.
Summer dresses/playsuits should be allowed.)

YouCantBeSadHoldingACupcake · 10/07/2025 16:57

Should have given more notice, but the uniform itself sounds more practical than most, especially for younger children

Spirallingdownwards · 10/07/2025 17:00

I disagree that blue is better than white from a stain perspective. White you can use stai removers and bleach based cleaners and bung in a hot wash and get rid of most any stain. Blue you can't.

RandomUsernameHere · 10/07/2025 17:17

Sounds like a great idea, it’s so much easier just to have one uniform rather than uniform and PE kit. They should allow children to wear the old uniform until it needs replacing though.

Choppedcoriander · 10/07/2025 17:27

The uniform is ok, but the lack of notice is a problem. I think joggers are much better than leggings, though. Shorts for all are good, too.

BleakHoose · 10/07/2025 18:19

Both my kid at primary and my kids at secondary have a casual uniform, especially the secondary school one. I like it, it's comfortable, and means more clothes can be used both inside and outside of school.

I agree they should have a transition period though.

TizerorFizz · 10/07/2025 18:49

@crumblingschools Never saw large numbers doing that in any school DDs attended or where I was a governor. Yes a few and they wear shorts under a dress. They appeared to be happy dressed as girls!

But I bet she doesn’t look ‘chavvy’ in either?!

I disagree. Nothing but nothing gets black pen or yellow sweat marks on the collar out of the white polo DS wears one day a week for PE.but I definitely agree the OP should have been told in February, at latest.

I'm another who doesn't understand why 5-10 year olds need to look "smart". DS wears black school shorts, a red polo and black trainer-like shoes in this weather and looks absolutely fine, as do the girls in black cycling shorts and a polo or a dress. As long as it's the right colour and keeps them identifiable on school trips, who cares?

Secondary school kids look bad enough in ties, let alone primary kids.

ClareBlue · 10/07/2025 19:07

Depth of Education rec 12 to 18 months to change uniform to avoid waste and financial burden on parents.

When a thread literally asks you what you think but people cry over what you think because boo hoo opinions 🙄

Loads of Primary uniforms look chavvy now. I hated my son's polos but at least they could wear smart shorts, which looked nice. Hardly anyone bought a sweatshirt or fleece because we all thought they looked crap. 99% of parents stuck to a smart red v neck jumper in winter instead because, well, choices and yes, opinions!

Zanatdy · 10/07/2025 19:21

I think its a good move, but should have been announced months ago.

londongirl12 · 10/07/2025 19:38

I’d love to get away from white polos!!!

user2848502016 · 10/07/2025 20:38

Much better, white polos are a PITA to wash, you’ll be able to stick everything in together now!

Agree they should have announced it earlier though and have a year of transition at least so that older kids can carry on wearing white polos that still fit

Yellow sweat marks? Even my teen boys never had those.
