DS2 teeth removal

Hi all. My two-year-old DS is having to have his two front teeth removed tomorrow following an incident at the park. He fell towards the end of a long slide, shattering both teeth when he hit the metal. Lots of blood and lots of screaming. It has been a very long few days with many trips to hospitals and dental clinics hours away.

I am heartbroken for him and would give anything for this not to be happening for him. He is a very beautiful, bright and confident little boy, attends nursery and soccer group for toddlers, and I worry about what this will mean for him. I understand that he will have a large gap until his adult teeth come in later. Does anybody have an experience of a little one losing teeth at this young age as a result of trauma? How did general anaesthetic affect your children? Did adult teeth come later with any problems? I imagine this will affect diet and speech for some time but hope he will quickly adjust. I think all fun will have to be banned in our household after this.

The main thing is not to ban fun. Don’t let it make you become an anxiously hovering parent.

I don’t think missing teeth in kids is that noticeable. They often have teeth missing for one reason or another.

Also, don’t transmit your misery to him. He probably won’t mind if you don’t.

He will bounce back very quickly. The mouth heals fast. It really won't impact his diet for more than a day or two. He may lisp a bit at first but the tongue soon adapts. It's a bit ridiculous to say all fun must be banned. He's a kid. Kids hurt themselves all the time doing normal everyday things and they bounce back. Just carry on with normal life.

Not personally but I'm sure I remember Rosie and Chris Ramsey's kid doing something very similar a few years ago

My DS is nearly 6 and his front tooth has JUST decided to put in an appearance after he lost it in an accident 2 and a half years ago. It’s just one of those things unfortunately and you get used to them missing a tooth. He actually looks more odd now it’s coming through after so long 🫣

My child years ago lost a baby tooth (incisor) coming down a slide forwards facing. He ended up with a gap for years (until adult one came through age 8) but his adult teeth all came through nice and straight. His other brother and sisters all needed braces when they were teenagers so we always laugh about it now and say that he saved us a fortune in orthodontics. I know it’s hard right now but children are so resilient and accidents happen.
