AIBU?

Share your dilemmas and get honest opinions from other Mumsnetters.

Do you ever read a CF thread and end up more annoyed with the OP than the CF?

Just that, really.

Someone will post: “My neighbour asked to borrow my car for a few days, and I said yes even though she doesn’t have a licence, and now she’s crashed it into a skip. AIBU to feel a bit miffed?”

And all I can think is: what in the name of spinelessness is going on here?

There’s always this breathless tone. “She moved into my spare room without asking, called my mum a cow and emptied my fridge. Should I maybe say something?”

No, Sharon. What you should do is grow a backbone, change the locks and possibly get your head examined.

It’s like they think martyrdom is a personality. As if being appallingly used but taking it with a trembly smile and a long Mumsnet post makes them holy.

I do get that people don’t like conflict. But at some point you have to wonder whether they’ve confused ‘being nice’ with ‘having no boundaries and the emotional fortitude of a damp cloth’.

Honestly, half the time the CF isn’t even the main character. The real drama is watching someone hand over their last Rolo, their house keys and their self-worth, and then go online to ask if it was a bit much.

Yes. Yes, it was. And so are you.

Are you okay OP?

I think there are some examples where people haven't helped themselves at all but others where I can see why it's a delicate situation and it's not always that easy to say no in real life especially for some people

cramptramp · 09/07/2025 16:23

I can’t think of any specific examples but I do feel exasperated with posters who are unhappy with something their partner or friends are doing but doesn’t say anything about it.

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 09/07/2025 16:27

I feel this sometimes, to the point where I wonder if it can be real
because surely no one would put up with that?!

Devilsmommy · 09/07/2025 16:30

Considering so many posters on here are too anxious to open the door or answer a phone it's not really surprising that they can't seem to say no to the cheekiest requests😂

Moanranger · 09/07/2025 16:37

Yes. The inability to deal with the most minor daily conflicts. I sometimes wonder how they get through life, it’s most perplexing!

I’m beginning to wonder whether there are people at Mumsnet HQ making up ludicrous posts to drive activity tbh. Some of them seem so fake.

Literally the most basic conversations are beyond them. ‘Oh, I couldn’t have said no. I’m not good with confrontation’.

I totally agree with you. Or if not Mumsnet HQ then various "newspapers" and magazines.
