To be 38 and unable to do my own washing

Laundryhelp45678 · 09/07/2025 06:52

I don’t know if I’m being stupid but I’ve had a Bosch washing machine for a few years now and I literally can’t turn my washing machine on and I certainly can’t wash things well in it, so I’m washing clothes (really badly) in the sink! Laundry is a basic life skill and at my age this is really embarrassing!

I mean it turns on for me eventually but I’m literally there pressing the weird button thing for ages until eventually it works (I average about 7 attempts). I could be stood by the machine feeling like an idiot for ages!

Once I can get the machine to turn on, all my stuff comes out soapy and my towels come out hard as a rock. I mean I don’t need to buy sandpaper because the towels will do that job perfectly well!

My towels come out with holes and rips as well and this happened from the very moment we bought this new machine!

I’ve tried changing detergent and softener and using less but it hasn’t helped.

I can’t do laundry like a normal person, I dread using the machine and not being able to turn it on and worry about it ruining my clothes so I’ve literally been washing my clothes in the sink for the last couple of years (I still wash towels in it thought because I just can’t be bothered to wash them in the sink).

It never used to be like this, I had a Zanussi washing machine and it worked fine, you could load clothes in, press start and they would come out without holes, clean and not full of soap, which was great because we all have far bigger things to worry about than washing right?

I reported these problems to Bosch including showing pictures of the rips in towels in the first year of having the machine, an engineer came out to look, they couldn’t find anything wrong with it. For the last 2 years Bosch have just fobbed us off saying it’s user error (which may very well be the case LOL) and delayed doing anything about the issue despite numerous chases from ourselves. They eventually sent another engineer who said the drum was faulty and causing the holes in towels (didn’t explain why I was having the other issues with it though). But they had fobbed us off and delayed things for so long that the diagnosis from this second engineer was made after the machine went out of warranty (clever tactic from them I guess) so they are no longer obliged to do anything to help us. But even if I get the drum fixed, it’s not going to help if I can’t get the soap out of my clothes and turn the machine on first time.

Is the Bosch brand just more entry level and cheaper quality or something? Is that why the customer service is so bad? Or am I just useless at laundry? Do I just cut my losses and buy a more upmarket brand like AEG or Zanussi?

@Sal17690Yes I would. The Op has made life significantly harder for herself instead of just coming to a solution like an adult.

Yes lol I’ve also asked the engineer that came and the shop for advice. I’m told the button is a temperature sensor perhaps your hands are cold, the button is a motion sensor hold it for longer, the button needs more surface area on it to work so use two fingers. No one can tell me how the button is actually meant to function. I feel so stupid!

Buy a new machine it sounds a pile of shit also "is your hands cold" that is a so dismissive,

ForgottenPasswordNewAccount · 09/07/2025 09:49

I have issues with the sensor button on mu bosch dryer

Sometimes it just doesn't work for me but will for the husband and kids.

But it's only occasionally and everything comes out dry

RitaFires · 09/07/2025 09:49

This is the kind of thing my mum would do. I'd cut my losses and just buy a new one. I wouldn't get too hung up on the brand, I do like Bosch myself but there are shite Bosch models or just individual machines that are faulty. Go to a shop and pick one with nice chunky buttons and not too many bells and whistles and then once it's set up enjoy not having to hand wash everything.

Viviennemary · 09/07/2025 09:51

Maybe there is an issue with the water supply to the machine like a blocked pipe and that's why the clothes are soapy. You either need to get a plumber or washing machine repair any to look,at it or buy a new washing machine. Run one of those bottles of washing machine cleaner through it first.

whitewineandsun · 09/07/2025 09:52

Bosch is very easy to use! This boggles my mind if true.

whitewineandsun · 09/07/2025 09:55

Sal17690 · 09/07/2025 09:40

You'd literally say 'grow up!' to a colleague if they expressed they needed some help to do their washing?

It's basic level adulting. If it's the machine, get it repaired or get a new one. I couldn't be doing with washing everything in the sink.

ClearFruit · 09/07/2025 09:55

This, i have an LG washing machine it has buttons and a dial the only touch screen on it is if you want an extra rinse or change spin speed.

Oh ok I always thought Beko was the entry level brand and Bosch more mid range but I think I’m wrong about that, maybe Il try Beko. Thanks

We have a beko and it’s brilliant.

I completely agree, this has been very noticeable lately. And there are never any solutions due to the problem clearly being unsolvable. Very weird.

I don't disagree. I just can't imagine ever saying 'grow up' to someone, especially someone expressing they needed help with something. Basic manners and kindness.

Did you remove the transport bolts?

Sometimes people just need to be told to get a grip, quite frankly, but then I don’t really have much patience for grown adults who can’t seem to manage basic life skills.

If this was a 38 year old man saying he couldn’t wash his own underpants, nobody would be banging on about “being kind”.

It is ridiculous that you need a button sensor at all. It’s a button - it should just turn on.

You need to read up on consumer law and get a new machine.

I know what you’re going through though.

We had a machine that broke and they just refused to fix. It’s a scam. The technician said he tried to get in contact with me but he lied. We spent a long time trying to get it sorted even though it’s a known fault with their machine. They used the wrong plastic for a part which meant the part melted.

Anyway, we bought a new machine from a different manufacturer at a completely different retailer and checked their policy for returns.

However, for the entire month we didn’t have a machine - I was going to the laundromat. I wasn’t hand washing like a savage.

This is very true.

OP is making things unnecessarily hard for herself. It makes no sense. I wouldn't tell people to grow up, bur I would think it. And it'd tell them to get a grip and get on with fixing the issue. Especially if they were 38.

Clearinguptheclutter · 09/07/2025 10:09

If they have said that the drum is faulty and they won’t repair or fix then that’s shit but surely you just move on at this point?

and go for a machine with actual buttons rather than fancy sensors- far less likely to be problematic

Katemax82 · 09/07/2025 10:12

Get a different machine! Also to avoid to out of warranty nonsense you could also just rent one, I do and although it costs 24 a month we used to get through washing machines every 2 years as we use them a hell of a lot. They will fix any problems and replace the machine if necessary

Just wanted to point out that you can buy that Indeset and other washing machines on boots appliances.
You get points!
I've done this in the past

Smittenkitchen · 09/07/2025 10:24

You shouldn't have to be patient with a button on a washing machine..
Definitely get a new one. Not Bosch!

Laundryhelp45678 · 09/07/2025 10:27

Digdongdoo · 09/07/2025 09:06

Why wouldn't you try a liquid or powder instead? Why just tolerate soapy towels for two years without trying a basic detergent swicth?

I have tried liquid (not powder) and it seems to do the same thing.

I think what I really need though is a new machine I think.

If I had an appliance that never worked I would be furious and nothing would stop me getting it replaced. Starting a thread, after allegedly months of handwashing, with the wording of the title (which implies something entirely different) would not be something I would do. It makes no sense does it.

Exactly! It’s bonkers. I can’t imagine spending years washing up in the sink when I could just go and get a new machine 😬
