JAWS is Brilliant

In its 50th year. Fraught with filming issues to the extent Steven Spielberg thought he’d shot his burgeoning career to pieces. But… it just fucking works.

If I wanted to I could find fault with a couple of scenes, but ultimately- it’s superb!

The main fault would be that stupid people genuinely thought great whites were the antichrist and killed them en masse. That makes me sad.

Also came on to say it's being rereleased this summer all over the place, have got tickets for the end of August.

Have seen many times at home, can't wait to see it in the cinema.

Vicliz24 · 12/07/2025 13:38

I was 10 when it came out . The first film I ever saw alone . Still adore It but do wonder why my parents let me alone .

SwedishEdith · 12/07/2025 13:41

It's one of those few films that I will always end up watching until the end whenever I spot it on TV. I also saw it at the cinema when I was 10. I do miss those films where everyone went to see them. Flawless film.

Mycatmyworld · 12/07/2025 13:50

Jaws , Iconic film, seen it possibly over 150 times, never get tired of it, camera angles are superb with that awesome movement on the beach when it hones in on Brody & makes viewers seem like they are moving as well. I was a projectionist when it came out & even went to see it once on my day off, we had to run it in 2 screens to get the crowds in, it ran for 8 weeks, happy days

SwedishEdith · 12/07/2025 14:02

Duel, one of Spielberg's early (his first?) film is also brilliantly suspenseful.

💯. Excellent film

Just watched it yet again. It's a great film. That anchor jacket is fabulous!

TranceNation · 09/07/2025 06:45

One of the all time greatest films. I love how you don't actually see the shark until much later in the film when they are in the boat out at school.

Apparently because we were originally supposed to see it a lot more but the mechanical model sank! Everything went wrong and Spielberg just used it to ramp up the tension and make it so much better. This is why no special effects will ever make for a great movie - they're always going to look rubbish in a few decades. Only great writing, acting and directing make for something that'll last.

FunkyMonks · 12/07/2025 20:57

Love Jaws even the 2nd and have watched the others but not as brilliantly as the first two love to watch them.
sadly there’s not been another shark movie that has even come close to Jaws it’s a classic, so much so that if I end up swimming out to far in the sea I end up spinning round in a panic with Jaws theme going off in my head swimming as fast as I can to get back to the shore 😂.

Re the anchor jacket. I once went to a very fancy party on a boat and the guest of honour was an European royal.* He was wearing a bright blue anchor jacket. I had forgotten until I saw the film again. At the time I thought it was an 'interesting' sartorial choice.

*this all makes me sound like I am Very Important. I was actually somebody's plus one.

('an European? A European? I think 'an' is correct but it does not sound right. It was Prince Henrik of Denmark anyway).

inigomontoyahwillcox · 13/07/2025 22:59

“Jaws at 50” - documentary about the making of the movie is on National Geographic right now.

I love the film but hate how it has instilled such fear of great whites. Amazes me that people actually think they hunt people, humans are not their prey 🙄

Apparently they don’t even like the taste of us which is why they might bite, but don’t tend to eat us whole.

The JAWS @ 50 documentary is great. I thought I’d seen everything there was to see about it but it has new info.

Jaws 4 was the most ridiculous shark film I had ever seen (a shark hunting a family) until I saw Deep Blue Sea, where one of the characters hides in an oven to avoid a shark. The shark then attempts to kill him by switching the oven on.

Oh you’ve clearly not come across sharknado 🤣 it had Steve from the original 90210 in it so that sets your ideas of their budget. I literally could only take 5 minutes we stumbled on it when on holiday in the US, I’m guessing it’s not been deemed economically viable for the UK market. Basic premise sharks take over the sea and land by use of tornadoes. That’s as far as I got, happy to be corrected if it’s the new classic and I should be more open minded.

I rewatched Jaws last night thanks to this thread and I think the sharks have a reasonable case for suing the filmmaker for misrepresentation but I still loved it.

BadLad · 14/07/2025 07:21

I haven't, but I love anything which sneaks into "so bad it's good" territory, so I will do a little research.

TheInvisibleWorm · 14/07/2025 07:28

Love Jaws, it's a spectacular film. My kids aren't ready for it yet, I'm very much looking forward to the point where they are 😍

I recently read Quint by Robert Lautner - it reads like Jaws fanfiction really, but I enjoyed it. It's Quint's life before Amity, including the Indianapolis story. I read the whole thing with Robert Shaw's voice in my head.

My favourite bit of Sharknado is where they're shooting sharks out of the sky like birds. The sharks fall when they die, as if they're only in the air because they're flying under their own power??! 😂 I really should rewatch it, it's so stupid it's glorious.

Justlovedogs · 14/07/2025 07:44

Fabulous film, so many quotes and Quint's solo speech! Robert Shaw was brilliant.
One of mine and DHs favourite films, always had to put it on if we came across it on TV. Actually, it was on last night. I dozed off on the sofa and woke up to the intro music! Didn't watch all of it, but I didn't need to as virtually know it word for word 🤣.
The bit where Hooper goes down to check the hull of Ben Gardner's wrecked boat at night still makes me jump, even though I know it's coming!

Apparently they don’t even like the taste of us which is why they might bite, but don’t tend to eat us whole.

However, a shark bite is often quite damaging and often fatal. 🤔

MinnieBaldock · 14/07/2025 10:33

I've seen Sharknado, its worth watching only for the ridiculousness of it. I think there is about 5 films but the 1st one was enough, even though I started to watch 2 and turned it off when the bloke looks out of an airplane window and there is a shark along side the plane.
Deep Blue was annoying. Really disliked the women shark expert who put stuff in the sharks brain, they all deserved to die after that, but sad the parrot got eaten.
I truly hate cruelty to any animal even if its not real in films it still upsets me.
Oh and I went on the Jaws ride in Universal studios with my sister it was fantastic and all the other people joined in the fun and made it a great experience. They have close that ride now I think it was a bit dated then which was about 10 years ago.

GasPanic · 14/07/2025 10:40

I think Shaw should have one an Oscar for Quint. Sometimes I feel the Oscars come too soon, and there should be a "delayed Oscars" as sometimes films and performances are not really appreciated until some time after. I suppose there is an argument as to which category he should go in, as I believe Nicholson won best actor in 75.

Also Jack Nicholson in a Few Good Men.

ohyesido · 14/07/2025 10:41

It wasn’t faithful to the book, particularly Matt Hooper has a very different story and character

I was around that age when I first watched it but it was the 80's and we did a lot of things that would most definitely be frowned upon today!

But at the same time I think children are so much more used to 'effects'& movies in general I think they'll be less scared than we were as kids.
ind you, kids are unpredictable! I had one that was obsessed with programs about sharks & the natural planet type things (look real) about dinosaurs when he was 3. But would freak iut over the kids basic animation 'Dinosaur Train' 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

Yep dd was in year 2 when chamber of secrets and Santa clause 2 came out. Basilisk scenes in hp no problem at all, kids all getting coal for Christmas, inconsolable for the rest of the night.
