Keeping Dc back a year

Am I doing the right thing?

We live in another country so the education system is different, children start their formal learning year at age 6 in Year 1

My Dc is still 6 and 7 over summer, so, young for their year. They started Year one last September but have been very ill the majority of the year and missed practically all year. I have queried with the school
for September for them to repeat Year 1. The reasons are:

-Missing a whole school year, they will struggle to catch up, self esteem will be low as they will be at a low level in the class, bonds will have been formed in class. Dc will need a lot of extra input and support

-Dc is very young for the year
anyway, hasn’t turned 7 yet, many of the kids are turning 8 in September/October. If Dc was born 7/8 weeks later, they’d naturally be going into Year 1 anyway this September

-Dc has the native language as their second language, although they cope well in this language, there are still aspects which are difficult

-Dc has friends from when they were in the Pre school (same school) now moving up into Year 1 in September and they would be in the same class

Dc is very bright, but has had a very difficult year

Am I doing the right thing?

What would you do?

I dont really see a reason why not, based on what you said

I would do that

I repeated a year for similar reasons at a similar age.

I wish I had done the same for one of my summer born kids.

trust your gut but make sure your DC does not feel it is a punishment.

I just hope no one makes fun of her etc 😔

she's close enough in age that they might not even figure it out for a while!
I work in a large school (UK) and we have one child out of 90 in y1 that has been held back, and then the same again in reception. The y1 child recently had a birthday, and some commented "7! that's the oldest in the whole year!" and that was it.
