I find it depressing how many people stay in an unhappy job

I think half my colleagues openly say how much they dislike their job but do nothing about it. ‘I’m waiting incase of redundancy’ the latest reason I heard today.

Is it me, if your job is making you genuinely unhappy, you should at least try to do something about it?

Its quite ironic that you find it depressing calling people unhappy

Ryeman · 08/07/2025 18:03

Are they genuinely unhappy though? Or just moaning for the sake of it. I mean, there must be very few people who don’t have a single thing to moan about when it comes to work.

People sometimes complain about things they don’t really want to change or are not arsed to. It’s human nature.

Whaleandsnail6 · 08/07/2025 18:07

Its not always that simple changing jobs.

Jobs can fit family life, your finances, your location well but not be enjoyable.

Taking the plunge to leace a job can be daunting and sometimes its better the devil you know

In an ideal world, everyone would be in a job they love or ar leaat enjoy, but its not always that easy

A lot of people can't afford to, or have a flexible working arrangement that makes life outside work immeasurably easier.

Mangetouts · 08/07/2025 18:12

I was one of them and then I got made redundant. which I didn't enjoy either.

I'm a work to live person. I do my current job properly out of pride but Ill take the opportunity for a grump if offered.

Most people work because they have to. Vast vast majority of people don't have the luxury of only working in a job they like and/or are passionate about.

LegleEagle · 08/07/2025 18:26

Enjoying your job is a luxury. Most people work to get food on the table etc and don’t have a huge number of options. It’s not like they’re ignoring an obviously better choice!

‘T was ever thus: do you think minors / factory workers / manual labourers worked for enjoyment historically?

I dislike my job but really it's not that easy to leave or change. It's quite a niche area of work and I'm not skilled to do much else. I am 57 and just need to get to 60 to take my private pension. I have to just stick it out a few more year but gosh it's hard going to drag myself in each day. Most of my office are in their early 60's just counting down to retirement. Luckily for them they do a maximum of two or three days a week unlike me who is full time. I could likely cope if I only did part time.

Some people are just natural whingers and would begrudge not having anything to complain about.

Yes this. They're just having a moan thats all.

A moaning employee is a good employee. They never go anywhere else, just stay where they are, moaning.
