To do the usual touristy things for a week? I won't drive in America...

Is this feasible?

Long time ago but spent a couple of weeks in SFO - absolutely loved it. Lots to do and see and a really interesting place to explore. Great public transport and also lots of things in walking distance ...

I visited in 2016 as a student and again in 2022 with DP as part of a road trip.

The 2022 visit was a bit of a shock, the streets were empty (no office workers around due to most companies moving to home working), and I noticed the drugs and homelessness a lot more than my previous visit. It just seemed like a very sad city.

I’d only spend a few days there tbh. Alcatraz and the bike ride over the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito are fantastic experiences, and we walked through Golden Gate State Park to the beach which was a lovely way to spend a day.

If you can, combine it with a few days elsewhere - we loved Napa (had my best meal of all time at a restaurant there!) and Yosemite. We also drove down the PCH to Morro Bay via Carmel and Monterey.

My DDs and I visited SF in 2016, 2017, 2018, each time as part of a quite comprehensive tour of the US by long distance Amtrak. We stayed a few nights each time at the Hyatt Regency, opposite the Ferry Building at one end of the Embarcadero/Fishermans Wharf area.

I loved it best of any US city we visited, it was so pretty, and wish I could go back one more time (too old and ill to travel now.)

We didn't venture deep into the Tenderloin but did go to Macy's for the Cheesecake Factory (overpriced and too busy.) We did travel as much over it as we could, including a lovely trip to the Praesidio/Golden Gate park; unlike some we LOVED the piers and the holiday atmosphere along the Embarcadero, didn't even mind the identikit tourist shops - Ghiradelli Square etc - and public transport was amazing. You def don't need a car.

I've heard it sank into a bit of a decline since our visitsm but is now on the up again. I hope so. a very special place.

A car will be a pain in the arse in SF. It's unusually walkable for an American city and has great public transport too..
