I read Raynor Winn's book The Salt Path and her other two books. I was looking forward to seeing the film at some point and to reading her next book. I felt sorry to read about the challenges the couple had faced, especially with regard to losing their family home and with Moth's health. Now, having read the article in today's Observer, I feel a bit stunned and am not sure what to think.

Penniless and homeless, the Winns found fame and fortune with the story of their 630-mile walk to salvation. We can reveal it was far from the truth

it is interesting is that it’s promoted as non-fiction. You expect a bit of artistic licence with a nice little story of triumph over the odds.

Who’d care to even delve too much deeper if it was just a nice tale along those lines? Crawdads woman was shady AF. Laura Ingalls-Wilder certainly put a rosy spin on things.

I haven't read the book but was thinking about going to see the film, I probably won't now after reading this. But I have read Where the crawdads sing and it's not a true story, it's a novel, what's the connection?

MondayYogurt · 06/07/2025 07:44

Now, this is proper journalism.

Santasbigredbobblehat · 06/07/2025 07:44

I read the first two books and continue to be surprised that ‘Moth’ is still so well given his diagnosis.

Crawdads author allegedly covered up a murder.

I’ve never read the book or heard of the film, but now I’m intrigued!

gsiftpoffu · 06/07/2025 07:48

Interesting article.
I was always sceptical about Tim's illness.
I'm a long distance hiker and it just didn't ring true that he could do that hike with his condition. So either he doesn't have the condition or be didn't do the hike.

Jossse · 06/07/2025 07:51

Thanks for sharing this. I’m halfway through reading this, wanted to see the film. But won’t be now. Was puzzled as to why they lost their home and went walking instead of getting work and finding somewhere to live, when all the time they were thieves and changed their names!

Or both...

Glad I only read the first book and I haven't seen the film. I really enjoyed the SP so disappointed to hear about the background.
Also it's hard to get a book published, I assumed that the publishers did proper background checks about so on before agreeing to publish. Been duped.
Also surprised that Moth is still ok, thought he'd be dead by now.

It sounds to me like the relative who lent the money was a bit of a mercenary dick tbh! Secured against their house at a very high interest rate... It's hardly the actions of someone who just wanted to help a desperate relative.

I thought the same. The relative was as bad as they were. He took full advantage of their situation to make a quick buck - he definitely wasn’t saving them out of the goodness of this heart. I don’t have much sympathy for them though. They put themselves in that situation by stealing.

BangersAndGnash · 06/07/2025 07:54

LOL: makes sense if the scene in the film where they capitalise on Moth’s alleged similarity to poet Simon Armitage by impersonating him doing a reading of Beowulf and collecting money.

ChandrilanDiscoDroid · 06/07/2025 07:55

So they're a pair of con artists. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

AWanderingFool · 06/07/2025 07:55

I wonder if they made up an illness for Tim and when all the tests that had been done came back negative and a consultant said it could be CBD since it wasn't anything else, they jumped at that and thus all the miracle bullshit came into being.

I really doubt anything about their story now!

Imdunfer · 06/07/2025 07:56

What a pair of absolute shits.

I hope they have the decency to make a sizable donation to a brain disease charity, but somehow I doubt it.
.

IsItFinallyMe · 06/07/2025 08:00

Absolutely gutted by this!! I’m referring to them as the shit path now!

Pumpkinforever · 06/07/2025 08:00

Oh dear - Captain Tom feeling all over again. What a pair of con artists! Bet Penguin are feeling pissed off as well.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 06/07/2025 08:00

Like many of you I couldn’t get past the first few pages, they weren’t made homeless, they were offered a council house but refused to take it as it was not the open fields they wanted, glad this is all coming out now

PhilippaGeorgiou · 06/07/2025 08:01

I have neither read the book nor seen the film, but if it is true that they have children, I think I may be able to explain why they have never been seen or heard from. With parents like that I would also be living my own "path".

Porkychops · 06/07/2025 08:01

I actually enjoyed the book but I agree the reason for.the loss of house was vague. Also, the article says that the house was already mortgaged to the hilt before the 100k loan business so they had obviously lived beyond their means for a last time. I hope the people in Wales can get their money back now, not a lot of work in these small communities.

I really disliked her in the book
i am also annoyed. What pretentious names they chose for theme

Butteredtoast55 · 06/07/2025 08:02

I think there's a lot in that article that makes sense. I did enjoy the book (and I'm seeing the film later today!) but it felt that there was something very shady in the way they lost their home and all their worldly goods. It was so readily glossed over that it screamed 'more to this than meets the eye'.
There's also the nonsense about her finding the magic document to exonerate them at the 11th hour and the judge not allowing it and refusing an appeal. It all came across as highly improbable, and her tone at times was very sneery and superior.
Given how much money she must have made, if they haven't cleared their debts and repaid those who showed them.kindness and support then they are indeed a pair of grifters.

Cloudsandbees · 06/07/2025 08:03

Great journalism. I gave up on the book because it was badly written and the author comes over as a nasty, entitled piece of work. She gleefully admits stealing in the book (e.g. staying on a campsite without paying).

She was very vague about where in Wales they'd lived too, which in retrospect, is dodgy in itself. You'd think Penguin would have shown more diligence too after the Belle Gibson case:

Belle Gibson's book publisher never verified cancer survivor's health claims

Penguin says it published The Whole Pantry ‘in good faith’ and never checked Gibson’s claims she cured her brain cancer through diet and lifestyle alone

Butteredtoast55 · 06/07/2025 08:04

@PhilippaGeorgiou that's a really good point. The two children seemed to be doing everything possible to distance themselves!
