Is it just me or is this very confusing

Are you prepared to give any sort of clue as to what the article is about?

I don't want to click on a random link.

Ginmonkeyagain · 05/07/2025 15:46

Umm, it is fairly clear It had been alleged there was a inappropriate drinking culture within the workplace at Bangor Cathedral.

MoriftedinaFrenchEscapeRoom · 05/07/2025 15:53

@Ginmonkeyagain Thank you (or are you replying to the OP?).

It's fairly clear. What are you struggling to understand?

Edited to add that judging by the other comments on this thread, it may have been updated. No lists or bullet points on the link that I clicked on.

BusWankers · 05/07/2025 15:54

It's oddly written. It's like it still at "notes" stage, ready to be written as a full article.

Mistake publishing done think?

Yes, but it's just like it's a bullet point list if statements, yet to be written as copy... Weird

NotDavidTennant · 05/07/2025 15:56

The opening paragraphs are a bit confusing but if you read on I think it's fairly clear that there is a culture of heavy drinking around the cathedral that has lead to sexual assaults and other inappropriate behaviour.

Bridport · 05/07/2025 16:02

They've just printed their notes. No introduction, no context and missing words.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 05/07/2025 16:12

I can't help but smile at the irony of Esme Byrd saying Esme was concerned about the language used around the children in the choir, and a culture where sexual boundaries were blurred. Esme's concerns for the children's wellbeing is sweet but perhaps a bit one-sided on that score.

WiddlinDiddlin · 05/07/2025 16:34

Yeah that looks like they've just lobbed in all the quotes without really writing an article at all!

Happyher · 05/07/2025 16:37

There’s debauchery in the diocese!

Bridport · 05/07/2025 16:38

I wonder if it was written in Welsh and someone used some kind of second rate translation app to put it into English.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 05/07/2025 16:41

Blimey!

Paranoid much? It’s clearly a link to a bbc article. Or do you not trust them?

EmeraldRoulette · 05/07/2025 16:49

I can understand it, but it is very badly written. It looks like a first draft.

SunShow · 05/07/2025 16:50

I'm not sure why this is headline news?

BertieBotts · 05/07/2025 16:54

It is really confusing without context. Feels like you're coming in halfway through a conversation. A bit "Sharon was T-Rexing in the supermarket".

I think it is assuming that you're already aware of the context of the case. It sounds like it has been covered widely in Welsh media, and when a case is covered widely you do often get articles which assume all readers know what is being referred to. I'm not in Wales and this is the first I've heard of it - if I wanted to know about the start of it, I think I'd click on the link about halfway down showing related articles, the one titled "Church in Wales calls for investigation of diocese" - how annoying, I can't stop this being a link now, but anyway, that seems to be the most likely title to take me to the start of the story.

Church in Wales calls for investigation of Bangor diocese

The Church in Wales has called for a series of reviews and investigations of Bangor diocese.

You really don't think that a load of pissed up priests doing 'the seven shots of Christ' and operating in a culture of blurred sexual boundaries is front page news?

Weekmindedfool · 05/07/2025 16:47

I'm not paranoid, just wanted to have an idea what it might be about to gauge whether it was of interest to me.

I did click the link after @Ginmonkeyagain clarified and it's weird - I'm seeing a perfectly "normal" article, not notes or bullet points as others are describing.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 05/07/2025 16:56

It's a very poorly written article. You need to get three quarters of the way through it before it starts to make any sense but there does seem to be a point to it eventually.

InWithThePlums · 05/07/2025 17:00

It’s a shame it’s had such serious repercussions (the alleged sexual assaults). Otherwise it sounds like something out of Father Ted- “seven last shots of Christ” ffs! I didn’t even think Anglicans went in for transubstantiation?

mathanxiety · 05/07/2025 17:39

BBC articles are extremely poorly written, and it's clear that nobody ever proofreads either their own work or the work of others. It's disgraceful.

I read several articles daily and keep a running tab on poorly worded sentences, misspellings, repetitions of sentences, terrible grammar, and other spectacular failures of the written language.

It's almost my little hobby. I'm up to three quatlrters of a legal pad at this point, having started in the early Spring.

What irony? Regardless of your opinion on her gender identity, she's right to be concerned and clearly she wasn't the only one. From the description it was an inappropriate environment for children. There's no allegation that she did anything wrong.

(Except exist as a possible trans woman, according to you, I guess)

Ddakji · 05/07/2025 17:48

It’s a badly written article with the usual BBC shoehorning of a man pretending to be a woman added in. Though I suppose that’s because they couldn’t find a drag queen.

What do you think will happen if you click on a link to a BBC news article that doesn't interest you?

LindorDoubleChoc · 05/07/2025 17:54

Sadly, proper journalism barely exists any more. Not enough people are paying for the news they read to support experienced writers (and particularly subs and editors) on decent salaries.

I was so shocked by the standard of writing on a Mail Online page 1 article today that I nearly started a thread on here about it. I'm tempted to start a little hobby on recording shocking journalism like you @mathanxiety !
