Just received a scam text message from a chap called Donald telling me that my CV has been attracting a lot of interest in the job market, and offering me a lucrative WFH position.

Has anyone ever replied to one of these to see what happens next? I’m quite curious to know how the scam works.

(For the avoidance of doubt, I am a highly-paid senior professional and not planning on ditching my job to go and work with Donald in his oddly-named organisation…)

As a highly paid senior professional, I’d hope you’d be more switched on to not replying. It can cost you a shitload.

You have misunderstood. I am well aware it’s a scam. I’d hope you’d be more switched on to reading my OP properly…

They ask you for money for processing fees or equipment purchase (or something along those lines).

I used to work for a well known charity and totally coincidentally got an unsolicited email allegedly from the charity I worked for, offering me a grant. I set up an email address very similiar to the one they had emailed me on (so I could shut it down when I’d finished with them) and I replied and played along for a few weeks.

But basically they wanted to offer me a $50k grant because they’d been following my work online (not sure exactly what work this was!) but I had to fill in an application form with all my details first (name, address, DOB, NI number, bank etc) and then I needed to pay a ‘processing fee’ of $100. The grant could be expedited if I paid $250.

Obviously I didn’t give any real information or pay any money but strung them along for a bit and the funny thing is, the person emailing then claimed to have ‘grown feelings’ for me. He/she then started a side hustle romance fraud scam at the same time. I guess you have to admire the ingenuity.

I eventually closed the email address and I’m sure poor Mr Andre was utterly heartbroken. 😂
