To think this seems very cheap?

Hi!

So in our old house during the winter(2021), our boiler packed in and we needed a new one basically ASAP, so I’m aware we probably paid towards the top end of the going rate. We paid circa £4k, this was to remove water tank and install a combi boiler.

We’ve since moved house, this house has a water tank. We had a leak so a plumber attended - asked him for a quote to change to combi boiler, as we noticed a good decrease to our fuel bill when we changed to a combi. He’s quoted us £1.6k for everything, new boiler, removal of water tank etc.

Is this extremely cheap? Or was I majorly ripped off before?

Cheap!
I had the same done about 5 years ago and it was £2k for a mid range boiler - the absolute cheapest one would have been £1.8k, and the plumber was a friend of a friend too - he didnt give me a discount but made sure it was as fair a price as possible if you see what I mean, and was slightly cheaper than other quotes I'd had (and a lot cheaper than the big ones like British gas!)

RacingDriver · 04/07/2025 09:28

I think it depends where you are in the country and size of house / power of boiler. To do the same thing it cost us c£4.5k. We did get one much cheaper quote but when we looked into the boiler it wasn’t as powerful and would have been fine for a 2/3 bed property but not a 4 bed with extra bathroom etc.

IwasDueANameChange · 04/07/2025 09:29

Way too cheap and I'd be very very worried about any boiler costing so little. Is it a brand new boiler from a well regarded brand like vaillant or worcester?

OurChristmasMiracle · 04/07/2025 09:35

I would always get multiple quotes and yes I do think it’s very cheap. The cheapest I found from a quick google was £800 for just the boiler and that was a very basic one. 1.6k sounds far too low if you are going to get a decent boiler and the work done.

TheNightingalesStarling · 04/07/2025 09:37

Cheap.

Unless he wasn't including the actual boiler in the quote?

NeedForSpeed · 04/07/2025 09:43

Hmm, feels much too cheap.

What is the boiler he's quoting you for? Have you checked it's suitable? I'd also look to see the price he's likely paid for it.

Denimrules · 04/07/2025 09:47

£5 k here but we did have to relocate the boiler. Old one was from the 90s and was a conventional flue

Hecatoncheires · 04/07/2025 09:55

Really, really cheap. A decent boiler costs that amount alone.

susiedaisy1912 · 04/07/2025 09:58

Get more than be one quote and find out what boiler it is. They come in different capacities/sizes (if that’s the right word) depending on the size of your house and how many bathrooms etc you have.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 04/07/2025 10:02

We’re in the NE, so relatively cheaper compared with down south. We paid £2200 recently for pretty much a straight swap combi boiler to combi boiler. And that was with the basic costs as was someone we know. So your price definitely seems too cheap and it makes you wonder why.

greencartbluecart · 04/07/2025 10:05

Doesn’t it depend on make and model of boiler ? Sone are crap

abracadabra1980 · 04/07/2025 10:06

Had mine done 6 years ago for £700 for the new combi and £150 for the plumber (no water tank removal, just old boiler removal. Not in the south though and up here (north east) it’s always cheaper.

Ponoka7 · 04/07/2025 10:10

It's around £2k here in Liverpool. Ask what boiler you are getting and the warranty. They can weigh the water tank in and some plumbers knock that off the price. No-one can answer if you were ripped off, or are now paying too cheap.

WildCountry · 04/07/2025 10:22

I got a new combi boiler within the past year. A straight swap for the old one. 4 bed house over three floors. It’s a Worcester Bosch and was £2k exactly including installation and with interest free credit on a portion of that.

Gill123789 · 04/07/2025 15:36

Thanks for the reply’s - so it’s a 35kw and the brand is Ideal. Never heard of it but my husband says most new builds fit these so they must be ok?!? We’ve got a Worcester just now.

The Ideal boiler is £1600 itself.. I've just googled it. There's something wrong wrong with the price you're being quoted.

dogcatkitten · 04/07/2025 16:01

You may find he quotes cheap and there are loads of extras, system flushing, maybe new radiators needed, plumbing not as easy as anticipated. Have you got a breakdown of the quote? Price of boiler, labour, is it cash in hand or through the books? How did you find him, recommendation, off the internet, knocked on the door? And where in the country are you, some places are much cheaper and he will obviously get a discount on the boiler.

MasterBeth · 04/07/2025 16:30

Ideal are perfectly good boilers. British made, if that's important to you.
