To not want to chat with my hairdresser?

I’d really rather not have to make small talk at the salon. I’m friendly enough and always polite but honestly, I just want to sit quietly, maybe read or scroll, and only talk when it’s about my hair.

I know some people love the social side of getting their hair done but for me it’s just a personal service, not a catch-up. AIBU to wish more hairdressers would take the hint when someone clearly doesn’t want to chat?

I’m sure some hairdressers would love a break from the chat! Just get a book out and say you’ve been waiting for a chance to finish it and they will get the hint surely.

I know someone who struggles socially and asks for a quiet appointment when she gets her hair cut, and they always oblige.

Don't hint, just specify when you're making the appointment.

Just say so. “I’ve had a really stressful week and I’m all talked out, do you mind if I just read my magazine / browse on my phone for a bit, I think I need to destress, thank-you.” I very much doubt they’ll mind a bit.

Hairdressers see dozens of different people a week. Expecting them to read minds and work out which of their customers wants to chat, and which don’t, and which might be a bit quiet but will post a scathing review online afterwards about how rude and unfriendly their stylist was because she didn’t even attempt to engage with them is unreasonable.

I always have a quick chat with my hair dresser at the start and then just pull a book out and start reading. I assume she is just happy not having to chat to me for hours.

I hate the hairdressers for this very reason - have yet to find one who doesnt mind me not wanting to chat away!

Not sure if hair can be cut with EarPods in? If yes, just say at the beginning ‘do you mind if I pop these in - I have some stuff I need to catch up on’ you don’t actually have to have them on.

Oh god yes … I have a very chatty hairdresser and even when I’ve got my book out she starts asking me about it.

I have two very young children and often my eight weekly visit is literally my only bit of alone time!

I found a hairdresser that does silent appointments. He asks hair related questions but that's it. Pure bliss

I won't ask you where but that is a stellar idea. I can't read when having my hair done as I need my glasses on.

Last week I got a taxi with local, lovely and very chatty driver. I told him I had a seminar to catch up on, put my headphones on and listened to an audio book.

The thing that irks me is why do hairdressers think you want to chat about shit with them anyway? I have nothing in common with any hairdresser I’ve ever had except my hair. They would be better spending their time sorting proper ways to give feedback rather that waiting for the applause that they seem to want at the end of each haircut.
