Posting here for traffic.
I am sure this is going to sound totally daft, but I’m intrigued having been through a phonics scheme this year in reception…
How does it work with teaching/learning phonics in the South?
My (Northern) child can sound out bath and grass easily. How does this work with a southern accent?!

When my children were learning to read, as they said the word, I would correct to our pronunciation. As they said GRASS I would say GRARSS. Same for all of the other words we use.

When they spell them, they say it as GRASS to remind themselves.

They are in Year 2 and 3 now so they read them with the AR sound automatically.

All of the teachers at their school use the AR sound apart from one who was from Blackburn. The biggest bug bear there was that she said ff instead of th which confused my eldest when spelling. Baff not bath.
